Ty you helped a lot with my axel but it’s just that when I do it I always lean on the left side and drop down when I land I’m crunching my back and can’t get my leg out aat the back
Hey 👋🏻 this is quite common it can be caused by an inefficient “swap” of sides, weight I the wrong place for landing, swinging on the takeoff, bad posture, a wide delivery of the leg, opening too soon, and jumping round the corner there’s probably one or more of these happening. You can send me a video for feedback if you like? iskatecoach.co.uk/shop/video-analysis/
i landed my axel 3 time 1 and a half years ago and now, when the harness is literally tied to me, I have amazing axels. the harness is literally clipped to the belt. as soon as the clips come off or the belt goes away, I pop the jump and don't go for it. everyone keeps telling me it's psychological, which ik it is, but the weird thing is that I know that I can do this jump, but it's like me body won't let me. idk what to do anymore. I've been skating for 9 years, I'm only on junior moves and haven't gotten a consistent axel. I've been competing in the same category for 3 years. i love skating, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth wasting my parents money if I'm not improving. i just got new skates so hopefully that helps but I don't have much hope anymore tho :(
Axel is a hurdle jump, it takes real dedication and commitment. If you can comit time and energy to it for a good amount of time you’ll find the confidence to try beyond your comfort zone and eventually land it. There’s 2 types of skater for bigger jumps, those that are fearless and throw themselves at it (quite literally!) and those that take their time to build it up, both ways can work, but the commitment is key. How bad do you want it? Have you tried harness or padding up? That might help 👍🏼
Helppp I have a question. When you swing the free leg past the jumping leg how far up should you swing it before tucking it behind the jumping leg? (In the air) I heard the “h” position is good, but far from everyone does it. Some people just step forward horizontally in the air and tuck immediately. Is one “correct technique” or should you just do what works for you?
The h will help you get more lift, even if you don’t fully lift it in front of you going for a bigger swing will increase air time so still better than none. Bringing the leg in straight away gets your air position faster but will restrict your height. Some people are naturally more springy and do t need a big h some are really not and need all the help they can get. There’s also a “p” position which keeps the free FOOT by the knee of the takeoff leg and gets both the lift from the knee and the quick air position. I usually teach an h first then go to the p for the double. However I have skaters who snap in too. How far off are you? Do you know your air time for the single? Times around 0.4-0.5 seconds are the minimum air time. See if you can get an app to measure it, if you’re not there you might need the h. 👍🏼
@@iskatecoach Thank you so much for responding^^ i tried the “p” position off-ice, and it it does help to snap into postition quicker. I have videos of me off-ice doing an axel entrance, 1,5 rotations, but without crossing my legs. That was 0.5 seconds. I wish I could send my video in a comment so u could see lol. It’s so difficult for me to cross them. Also with scratch spin. Is this a strength issue? (I started skating 3 months ago btw so maybe I’m not so strong yet)
Hi Paul, thank you sooo much for this great demo. I find your videos incredibly helpful and can't wait to try these on the ice. One question though: in step 4 (2ft 360) you rotate into the circle before you jump in order to make the full 360, but it doesn't look like you do it as much in step 5 when you add the one foot take off. Is that correct?
Yes the two foot version is really to help you feel a 360 and land forwards. For the final stages you should focus on using your edge and torque from your trailing side (my right side / arm / shoulder / leg / hip) in this demo. The one foot takeoff allows more of a pivot around the left side and also the use of the edge also helps this action so it’s good practice to not rely on turning into the circle. I doubt you’d make 1.5 rotations if you did this anyway as the tension needs to be held back, rather than delivering it first. Hope that helps
Hi, I am struggling with the landing for a year now. On some days I am quite close, but the toepick touches the ice, so the landing is not clean. Any suggestions?
Do you mean on the landing? Posture in the step forward is key here, if you’re landing forward it’s really likely that you leant forward as you stepped forward into the jump, try to arch your back more upright as you take that step and it should help your landing 👍🏼
@@iskatecoach Many thanks, I will try. Yes, I lean forward sometimes, the other times I land on stiff legs 😭. The thing is that all other jumps are landed properly....
Yes well both actually, my blades are a hybrid blade! They are free skating toe pick and dance length, they are also wider and taller than usual for deeper edges and easier twizzles!
But since he has the cool accent and loves over the pond, I'm going to start calling them 3 jumps here in TX too. I also pronounce the salchow the proper way too lol. Not Sal cow. It's salco. :)
Looking back, landing it felt so damn good. Prolly the happiest i had been in a while not exaggerating.
Best guide I have seen so far. Thanks for the tips Coach Paul. Will try this tomorrow.
Great to hear! Let me know if it worked!
I have been on A jumps for 2 years as of now. So I am going to try these to help me get closer to getting it.
Oh good luck! But try working on it off ice
Let me know how you get on 👍🏼
@@iskatecoach I haven’t gotten it yet, but I am on the training harness now. And I’m getting close to landing it on the harness :)
This video is soooo amazing thank you so muchhhhhhh!! For your effort and time. Great amazing tips
Hey thanks 😊
I love this! Wish I’d had this calibre of coaching years ago
Hope it helps break it down for you
Brilliant Technique !
Thanks
This is amazing! Now I have new hope lol thank you !!!
Yay 😀 I hope these work for you

How’s the axel going?
@@iskatecoach It's really great. I could finally land my axel. Yippie!!! Thank you very much
Love this video, thank you so much!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Already trying it.
Let me know how it you get on!
This channel is better because you don't just copy and repeat what the other coaches online do and say. Plus you're cute and a man.
Thanks 😆
Wth does gender have anything to do w it tho
@@animationsdlx I'm not going to get into a political discussion on gender on an ice skating video. Men and women are different. Use your brain
