@@viceroy2672 Literally nothing officially available on why the Xbox version was delayed or comments from Microsoft, Sony or Game Science suggest that Sony was actively involved in the game's development or provided tech support. Not to mention, it's not even a PS5 exclusive. It's on PC, and it was supposed to be day and date on Xbox, with its indefinite delay happening at literally the eleventh hour as it was scheduled to come out on other platforms as expected. It's no different from Baldur's Gate 3 and especially when considering the game isn't even that well optimized for PS5 at all with its extreme fluctuations in performance/resolution, there's no shot that Sony would've okayed the game to come out in such a state if they were actually assisting technically. The game was clearly built for high-end PCs and they prioritized PS5 due to a mix of issues optimizing for multiple consoles, and the fact that if the rest of Asia is any indication, Xbox's user base is probably miniscule in China to justify delaying the whole development pipeline just for it.

Cog's lemonade stand analogy is actually the perfect example of why you don't want to "sell your drink" to the competition. Nintendo and Sony sell a wide variety of other drinks at their own stand and they make a killing off other's hard work because of it. Microsoft doesn't have that, their own drink doesn't sell well and so no one visits their stand to buy other (aka third party games) drinks either. The best position in the industry is being a successful platform holder. Look at Valve and how they don't really make games anymore, because why bother when you're making billions of dollars a year with very little risk? Which more on topic, that is the real answer to "where things went wrong" for Microsoft. The day they decided to make their exclusives release day 1 on PC as well sealed their fate. Like seriously, go look up Xbox One units per year. It lines up pretty much perfectly with Phil pushing the day 1 PC stuff back in 2016. Can't agree with Cog's vision of the future of Xbox, where F2P games thrive and the ecosystem is dominated by children using their parents' credit cards on Roblox and Fortnite on their Smart TV. There's no character, there's no creativity or quality, there's no room to push the industry forward -- all that exists is trend-chasing and monetization. Xbox would've had a much healthier, more vibrant ecosystem in a world where Game Pass never existed, but now that it does, this is the drain that Xbox is doomed to circle around until ultimately putting Game Pass on PlayStation and pulling the plug on their own handheld.

PlatinumGames may claim to be planning some things but I genuinely believe they're way closer to death's door now than they've ever been, even during the days of stuff like their licensed games (Transformers Devastation and TMNT Mutants in Manhattan), Wonderful 101 and the cancelation of Scalebound. Most of the big guys either rejoined Kamiya at Clovers Studio within Capcom to work on the Okami sequel, Takahisa Taura (gameplay designer for NiER Automata, director of Astral Chain) also left and supposedly this was after Nintendo may have canned an Astral Chain sequel, the Bayonetta Origins director just left like a week ago, and Kamiya's been very outspoken about how Platinum under Inaba's leadership was going all in on stuff like live-service and chasing profits, which was why he decided to leave in the first place. I honestly don't think they're surviving the decade and it makes me so sad as someone who was so down for stuff like another Bayonetta, another Metal Gear Rising or especially Astral Chain 2
If Black Myth was a timed exclusive then they would have told us when it was due to be released on Xbox, you know, like Indiana Jones is a timed exclusive and we got told both dates at the same time... Also Cog's argument of never seeing it advertised for all and then last minute it only showing PS and PC with no note as to why, that woudl again explain it's because of an issue and not because they can't tell us.. If it was timed they would know EXACTLY how long the exclusivity deal is for! Last, of course Xbox are going to come out and defend their platform and say it's not because of the Series S, but why should we believe that when Balders Gate literally had the same issue! All I truly want for the oblivion remake is for them to drastically update the animations and maybe touch up the combat system. I’m not at all expecting major changes to the world, quests, or dialogue apart from just a graphical overhaul. But if they don’t touch up the gameplay AT ALL that will be a tragedy. We know modders are capable of this so I hope a full dev team will be able to touch up the combat as well. Even if they just find a way to add some impact even if it’s just in the animations and sound I’ll be ecstatic.

The failure of Xbox is games and management, when they had 5 studios they couldn't compete but after acquiring studios management failed to deliver a level of quality, poor management at studios like 343, Hellblade 2 & Starfield being so mediocre for the long dev time in development, releasing unfinished games like Flight sim and all the 30fps releases, Playstation is out here trying to kill Xbox, while Phil Spencer isn't aggressive, Matt Booty is terrible at managing studios, and their marketing is garbage, if management was replaced with competent leaders who wish to compete like Peter Moore from the 360 era and they kept the games exclusive they would absolutely outsell Playstation they simply own bigger IP's, and more studios. The sell everywhere strategy works for office 365 because Microsoft is a software company and never really focused on hardware, if they do the software everywhere strategy with Xbox it will ultimately kill their hardware off and leave them as a third party with no leverage and be at the mercy of Sony and Nintendo like their mobile side is with Apple and Google.
Exactly. Also, Peter Moore so wanted to take down Sony that he pushed out the Xbox 360 before it was ready. During manufacture, before launch, he was getting reports of the hardware issues, but instead of delaying the launch until early 2006 to find the issue and fix it, Moore decided to just push it out and let people exchange/return their consoles if they needed to. He put the RROD on the customer rather than on the company, then he had to put it on the company to the tune of $1 billion. So, Peter was a bit too competitive. lol But I agree that Microsoft needs to go back to keeping games exclusive to Xbox, if they want to compete. My feeling, though, is that they don't want to compete in hardware anymore.

I just want to make it clear that not only did Game Science not say there wasn't a deal with Playstation but also Microsoft never once said there was one. All Microsoft said was they could not comment on any deals since that was being reported and that there was, at the time, no technical issues with the game brought up to them. Considering how ass the game runs on PS5, it not running on Series S isn't exactly a surprise to anyway.
remember how demon's souls was literally sony wanting to have their own oblivion? the remake for demon's is basically just the existing code of ps3 DeS, but with unreal engine 5 graphics or whatever slapped on top of it. if they did the same with oblivion, id actually be pretty stoked. DeSr is still my pick for best ps5 game to date. masterpiece level execution, but the code is still familiarly janky 😊
Thanks a lot for answering my question! My feeling is that the Xbox brand has been slowly bleeding out for a decade. I would say that some of the flashpoints are: 1. The RROD epidemic on Xbox 360. 2. The disastrous early press conference for Xbox One. 3. The lack of hardware parity with their companion PS consoles that made the ports on the Xbox inferior. 4. Continued lack of exclusive games (until recently) and distinct brand identity that excites the fans (when Sony put more resources into PSN during the PS4 era, Xbox lost its main appeal). I began to lose faith in Xbox when 2 of my Xbox 360 consoles died and my Xbox One died. I somewhat reluctantly bought the Series X because finding a console at launch during Covid was difficult and I figured that most of the games that I would want to play would be on Xbox anyhow. I swore to myself however, that if my Series X died, I would NEVER buy another Xbox (for perspective, I own every Sony console from launch and they all still work with no hardware issues). I got on Game Pass early and I was evangelizing it to many of my friends who were previously into Xbox but I literally convinced none of them to adopt it. At the end of the day, the exclusives that Xbox had were just not as appealing as Nintendo's and Sony's. As we began to approach the reality of MS and Sony becoming more like PCs, and approaching low tier PC price points in tandem, I am finding myself considering (with the exception of Nintendo's next system) not buying another Sony or MS console. For better or worse, everything is becoming a PC nowadays and I finally bit the bullet and built a nice 4K living room PC that is above the performance of the current gen consoles. With the ballooning costs of everything, I feel that many others will adopt this approach as well, especially when they learn that they can easily buy discounted game keys on the internet and save a ton of money. The Series X might be MS' last hurrah, but perhaps Sony isn't too far behind in the next decade.

PC isn't a Microsoft platform. Microsoft doesn't collect a license fee from third-parties that make games for Windows. PC is an open platform, which is how Valve is looking to push SteamOS to becoming the dominant gaming OS on PC.

This strikes me as Xbox being sore losers missing yet another GOTY calibre title, because of the Series S limitations, yet again. Why would Xbox openly come out and say Wukong isn't on Xbox because of console limitation? Especially when more than 50% of Xbox next-gen owners own the Series S?

And if Msoft had reason to believe one was in place and rather than disclose it, the devs decided to imply console limitations were the issue, I don’t see why that wouldn’t trigger legal action. Because it's not an exclusivity deal. It was a technical help deal where Playsation gave them money and help to prioritize PS5 development.

Not to mention, it's not even a PS5 exclusive. It's on PC, and it was supposed to be day and date on Xbox, with its indefinite delay happening at literally the eleventh hour as it was scheduled to come out on other platforms as expected. It's no different from Baldur's Gate 3 and especially when considering the game isn't even that well optimized for PS5 at all with its extreme fluctuations in performance/resolution, there's no shot that Sony would've okayed the game to come out in such a state if they were actually assisting technically. The game was clearly built for high-end PCs and they prioritized PS5 due to a mix of issues optimizing for multiple consoles, and the fact that if the rest of Asia is any indication, Xbox's user base is probably miniscule in China to justify delaying the whole development pipeline just for it.

Cog's lemonade stand analogy is actually the perfect example of why you don't want to "sell your drink" to the competition. Nintendo and Sony sell a wide variety of other drinks at their own stand and they make a killing off other's hard work because of it. Microsoft doesn't have that, their own drink doesn't sell well and so no one visits their stand to buy other (aka third party games) drinks either.
The best position in the industry is being a successful platform holder. Look at Valve and how they don't really make games anymore, because why bother when you're making billions of dollars a year with very little risk?
Which more on topic, that is the real answer to "where things went wrong" for Microsoft. The day they decided to make their exclusives release day 1 on PC as well sealed their fate. Like seriously, go look up Xbox One units per year. It lines up pretty much perfectly with Phil pushing the day 1 PC stuff back in 2016. That was the peak year for Xbox One, it's only been downhill since then.

Can't agree with Cog's vision of the future of Xbox, where F2P games thrive and the ecosystem is dominated by children using their parents' credit cards on Roblox and Fortnite on their Smart TV. There's no character, there's no creativity or quality, there's no room to push the industry forward -- all that exists is trend-chasing and monetization.
Xbox would've had a much healthier, more vibrant ecosystem in a world where Game Pass never existed, but now that it does, this is the drain that Xbox is doomed to circle around until ultimately putting Game Pass on PlayStation and pulling the plug on their own handheld.

PlatinumGames may claim to be planning some things but I genuinely believe they're way closer to death's door now than they've ever been, even during the days of stuff like their licensed games (Transformers Devastation and TMNT Mutants in Manhattan), Wonderful 101 and the cancelation of Scalebound. Most of the big guys either rejoined Kamiya at Clovers Studio within Capcom to work on the Okami sequel, Takahisa Taura (gameplay designer for NiER Automata, director of Astral Chain) also left and supposedly this was after Nintendo may have canned an Astral Chain sequel, the Bayonetta Origins director just left like a week ago, and Kamiya's been very outspoken about how Platinum under Inaba's leadership was going all in on stuff like live-service and chasing profits, which was why he decided to leave in the first place. I honestly don't think they're surviving the decade and it makes me so sad as someone who was so down for stuff like another Bayonetta, another Metal Gear Rising or especially Astral Chain 2
If Black Myth was a timed exclusive then they would have told us when it was due to be released on Xbox, you know, like Indiana Jones is a timed exclusive and we got told both dates at the same time...
Also Cog's argument of never seeing it advertised for all and then last minute it only showing PS and PC with no note as to why, that woudl again explain it's because of an issue and not because they can't tell us.. If it was timed they would know EXACTLY how long the exclusivity deal is for!
Last, of course Xbox are going to come out and defend their platform and say it's not because of the Series S, but why should we believe that when Balders Gate literally had the same issue! And the Black Myth devs don't have the same experience, they are not saying it will take years, they are saying they don't have the years of experience so they are likely seeking help to get it sorted.

DF proved months ago that an S would have trouble running Wukong. 10gb of ram are not enough for consistent frames and performance, so the dev saying this is not surprising. All I truly want for the oblivion remake is for them to drastically update the animations and maybe touch up the combat system. I’m not at all expecting major changes to the world, quests, or dialogue apart from just a graphical overhaul. But if they don’t touch up the gameplay AT ALL that will be a tragedy. We know modders are capable of this so I hope a full dev team will be able to touch up the combat as well. Even if they just find a way to add some impact even if it’s just in the animations and sound I’ll be ecstatic.

I used to love The Last Word, it was one of my last connections to the D2 community. I didn't like the way it went after Travis, he was just so inflammatory it was uncomfortable. The failure of Xbox is games and management, when they had 5 studios they couldn't compete but after acquiring studios management failed to deliver a level of quality, poor management at studios like 343, Hellblade 2 & Starfield being so mediocre for the long dev time in development, releasing unfinished games like Flight sim and all the 30fps releases, Playstation is out here trying to kill Xbox, while Phil Spencer isn't aggressive, Matt Booty is terrible at managing studios, and their marketing is garbage, if management was replaced with competent leaders who wish to compete like Peter Moore from the 360 era and they kept the games exclusive they would absolutely outsell Playstation they simply own bigger IP's, and more studios.
The sell everywhere strategy works for office 365 because Microsoft is a software company and never really focused on hardware, if they do the software everywhere strategy with Xbox it will ultimately kill their hardware off and leave them as a third party with no leverage and be at the mercy of Sony and Nintendo like their mobile side is with Apple and Google.

Also, Peter Moore so wanted to take down Sony that he pushed out the Xbox 360 before it was ready. During manufacture, before launch, he was getting reports of the hardware issues, but instead of delaying the launch until early 2006 to find the issue and fix it, Moore decided to just push it out and let people exchange/return their consoles if they needed to. He put the RROD on the customer rather than on the company, then he had to put it on the company to the tune of $1 billion. So, Peter was a bit too competitive. lol
But I agree that Microsoft needs to go back to keeping games exclusive to Xbox, if they want to compete. My feeling, though, is that they don't want to compete in hardware anymore.

I just want to make it clear that not only did Game Science not say there wasn't a deal with Playstation but also Microsoft never once said there was one. All Microsoft said was they could not comment on any deals since that was being reported and that there was, at the time, no technical issues with the game brought up to them. Considering how ass the game runs on PS5, it not running on Series S isn't exactly a surprise to anyway.

My feeling is that the Xbox brand has been slowly bleeding out for a decade. I would say that some of the flashpoints are: 1. The RROD epidemic on Xbox 360. 2. Continued lack of exclusive games (until recently) and distinct brand identity that excites the fans (when Sony put more resources into PSN during the PS4 era, Xbox lost its main appeal).
I began to lose faith in Xbox when 2 of my Xbox 360 consoles died and my Xbox One died. I somewhat reluctantly bought the Series X because finding a console at launch during Covid was difficult and I figured that most of the games that I would want to play would be on Xbox anyhow. I swore to myself however, that if my Series X died, I would NEVER buy another Xbox (for perspective, I own every Sony console from launch and they all still work with no hardware issues).
I got on Game Pass early and I was evangelizing it to many of my friends who were previously into Xbox but I literally convinced none of them to adopt it. At the end of the day, the exclusives that Xbox had were just not as appealing as Nintendo's and Sony's.
As we began to approach the reality of MS and Sony becoming more like PCs, and approaching low tier PC price points in tandem, I am finding myself considering (with the exception of Nintendo's next system) not buying another Sony or MS console. For better or worse, everything is becoming a PC nowadays and I finally bit the bullet and built a nice 4K living room PC that is above the performance of the current gen consoles. With the ballooning costs of everything, I feel that many others will adopt this approach as well, especially when they learn that they can easily buy discounted game keys on the internet and save a ton of money. The Series X might be MS' last hurrah, but perhaps Sony isn't too far behind in the next decade.
Anyone who thinks its an exlusivity deal, should never discuss video games again, as Black Myth Wukong is already available on a Microsoft platform. This guy on the right is astoundingly dumb.

PC isn't a Microsoft platform. Microsoft doesn't collect a license fee from third-parties that make games for Windows. PC is an open platform, which is how Valve is looking to push SteamOS to becoming the dominant gaming OS on PC.

I hope you guys don’t read these and put too much thought into them. The comments around the Wukong story are kind of crazy in here and yall didn’t really say anything off base. You have reasons to be skeptical based on what has/hasn’t been said and what we’ve experienced in the past with situations like this one. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone is free to believe what they want but the blanket statements and name calling is not cool.

I do believe Sony did help in the optimization of Wukong but that’s way different than a time exclusive, Microsoft can literally do the same and help game science with optimization then problem solved but they wont do it, still dare to scream conspiracy, yeah I’m not buying it.
Exactly. Sony did indeed help. Xbox should've too. They fumble everytime...
But then again I do recall many reports and outcry that they do not respond to developers when they need them to help. So yeah...
