The hard drive has a unique encrypted key for each individual ps4. If you could simply swap hard drives pirates would be able to simply clone drives and steal games. It also keeps personal data protected. Also you might want to have the console completely turned off before you start removing and replacing hard drives.

I believe you would have to transfer the data on the PS4 pro onto an external hard drive then use that to install onto the PS4. A tip: when you unplug a hard drive on a PSx XBox PC and so on. Always power it down so you don't damage the hard drive or corrupt the files. I seen both PS4's where in rest mode.
You have to hold the power button in while it's on and wait for 2 beeps and then let go. This will turn it off. Once it comes back on, you have to update the system software if you haven't already. You have to connect your lan cable to choose the internet option to download the update. After that, the PS4 should restart and you should be all set.
And this is if you have your hard drive in a different console (your wife's). Also, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE HARD DRIVE OR ANY PLUGS WITHOUT MAKING SURE THE CONSOLE POWER IS OFF!!! You can cause more damage and corruption to your hard drive and files.
Well, I for one was happy to find this video regardless of him hot-swapping the drives. I needed to know whether you can swap one drive for another and retain the data due to a screwup on my system thanks to Sony System 8. Long story short... I cloned my HDD to an SDD. The clone worked GREAT, but then it wanted to update to system 8. Everything crashed. Tried my old HDD and it won't work because the system is looking for a system 8 build. It seems the System 8 'upgrade' also flashes your firmware rom and you cannot go backwards. I was considering getting a used PS4 slim with system 7.51 on it, putting my system 7.51 original HDD in it and then extracting the game data. But now I know that each drive is linked to each specific PS4. Bummer. Yeah.. I should have done the USB game backup before messing with things. Oh well....

The weird sound made by your wife's hard drive may have been vibration caused by you not tightening the hard drive. I would have removed the power cable from each ps4 before removing the HD. You were so lucky you did no permanent damage.
Were both PS4s using the same account? Also it helps to not have the PS4s in sleep mode, the orange light was on. I upgraded all 3 PS3 models (OG 60gb, slim and super slim) and my white PS4 and my PS4 pro. But i never just hotswapped the hdds, I copied everything to an external hdd or just connected both systems with an ethernet cable (lol the black ethernet cable that came with the original 60gb PS3 never fails) PS3 60gb to 650gb WD, PS3 slim to 500gb (the old white PS4s samsung HDD), PS3 super slim to 800gb WD, white PS4 to 1tb (the PS4 pros old HDD) and PS4 pro too 2tb Barracuda. Plus i use a 500gb Toshiba external with my Wii U, a 1tb WD external with my ps5 and a 2tb Toshiba external that I switch between my PS4 and PS4 pro. I even put a 60gb HDD on my Xbox 360. The only thing i haven't upgraded is my Xbox 1s but that's 1tb already.

Filesystem is unreadable. Not even Linux can see it (and that can see most things). Is apparently encrypted to a key in the PS4 hardware, hence why swapping a drive to another PS4 comes up as an empty drive.

if you have a broken ps4, take the hard drive out of that one and put it into the new one WHILE BOTH ARE COMPLETELY OFF and then pu the new ps4 update onto a hard drive by a computer, plug both the hard drive and the USB with the update into the new ps4 and go through the process, but in order to fully have the update go through you have to clear the USB and make a file called "PS4" all caps, no spaces, the inside of that make another folder called "UPDATE" and download the new ps4 update into that update folder, there are guides to this, then you should be golden after the firmware update. you can also follow google and UA-cam tutorials on this.

69porkchops1 No, it will wipe all content. You need to buy another drive wich you install, then you can move you games from your external drive and back to the new PS4 drive. Then you keep the external as back up/ whatever

u can use a 3.0 sata hard drive cable format the hard drive to any playstations then u can play any games

Yo My hdd isn’t working and I’m thinking of putting a new hdd in will I lose my data just thinking because no point of data isn’t all there may aswell wait for ps5 if someone could help me wd be great thx 😊
Yes of course you will, everything you have stored on the ps4 is on your HHD, Once you replace your hard drive with a new one you lose EVERYTHING. This man changed his hard drive from his PS4 in to his girlfriends PS4 and that's why he still had all his games.
Yeah it will unless u back it up with an external hard drive or flash drive. It also saves it with cloud storage if u have ps plus.

I got 1 question I have a external hdd with all my games on it but wanna remove it from the case and install it into the Ps4 with out redownloading all games afterwards

69porkchops1 No, it will wipe all content. You need to buy another drive wich you install, then you can move you games from your external drive and back to the new PS4 drive. Then you keep the external as back up/ whatever
4 years later but try factory resting the other ps4 hard drive before you put it in
