Simply wow! I've watched a ton of videos regarding diorama vegetation and was coming to the conclusion that it was either a Cricut or commercially printed items (both a path to bankruptcy!) but your technique blew me away. Credit also for you replying to every question! I shall look forward to looking at your other videos.
I cannot tell you how much I absolutely LOVE you for uploading this method! 💖 I was really depressed since my budged doesn't allow for buying ferns and most look really too out of place anyway in a diorama since they are from thick material. It's depressing since I really adore ferns and the areas of nature that sport them so frequently. So, THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing me a way that does make it possible without costing lots of money and without them looking weird! 🥰 This makes one of my projects crawl all the way to the top of my to-do list now. I'm looking forward to using this method~. ^^
Thank you. I also don't like the look of store bought ferns or the common do-it-yourself methods. Three months of experiments and this method was born. The main thing is to use PVA wood glue.
@@baronvonclay Desperation breeds the most impressive ideas, as per usual~. I'm so glad you tested things out and shared it with us all to make dioramas all over the world more realistic with this new method. This german potato here is very greatful for that.
Thanks a lot! This was just the video i needed. I couldn't make it work the first time (though i just grabbed the first wood glue that got into my hand...so it is not necessarily PVA, and i might have put a bit too much gypsum in it... :D), but i'll definietly keep trying, cuz this looks simple and great.
Tnx. I chose from what was at hand. Stationery PVA was not suitable, but carpentry PVA turned out to be what was needed. You need enough plaster so that the resulting product does not sag. If you add too much, the vegetation will become too fragile.
@@baronvonclay Thank you! You are truly an inspiration. I leave a comment for the algorythm. People have to see your wonderful work. ❤ In therms of glue. Maybe bookbinding glue could also do a good job. It is a pva glue too, but it remains a little flexible compared to woodglue. If I'm not wrong. Just give it a try. Your method is gold. And I'm grateful to learn from you. Thank you very much!
do you have any substitute for the Gypsum? would something like Plaster of Paris work? or is there a common kitchen ingredient that could work? I am just curious, Thank you!
Wow, I'm so glad I saw this before i went to figure it out myself - I was going to try to print and cut paper and thicken it with UV resin, but this is a cut above! Would you say that this is about a 1:1:1 by volume paint:PVA:plaster? Im a carpenter when Im not making models, and that doesnt look like carpentry glue - which is typically yellow. What brand did you use, out of interest. Thank you so much for sharing...!
Henkel super PVA glue. The ratio is not 1:1:1. This will make it too fragile. I always make an approximate mixture based on the overall viscosity. The point is simple. The more glue, the stronger it is. The more paint, the more flexible (the main thing is to give the desired color, it changes a little when it dries). The more plaster, the better it retains its shape (does not sag), but it can become brittle. It also loses its gloss from plaster. It all depends on what I want to do. I recommend using a silicone mat, it’s more comfortable.
1. I buy plaster at a hobby market. Gypsum allows the dried paint and glue to retain its shape. But it also makes her fragile. Therefore, find a ratio that is convenient for you. 2. Let it dry for 24 hours. You can remove it after 2-3 hours, but it is better to let it dry completely.
I do very fine work and truly thank you for your generous technique. I will work at it till resembles yours. That will be hard to beat. A try artist U R.
What does the gypsum do? When googling gypsum I just get that its used as a fertilizer but I doubt you use it to "grow" your plants in that sense lol :)
I have tried this with iron wire, but the paint just seems to slip over the tape. Could you explain what the amount of glue and plaster should be compared to the paint? Perhaps the mixture i have is not perfect?
It is better to paint the wire before making the fern. It is also worth letting the leaves dry well, at least 2 hours, and ideally a day. I use artistic paint, it is stronger than paints for modeling. The more gypsum, the less durable the leaves are. But gypsum will not allow the leaves to sag. Try to find the right amount yourself. You have your own paint and glue. Also, most of all in the mixture should be PVA wood glue, then it is stronger. Paper PVA will not work.
@@baronvonclay The paint seems to slip and drift over the tape, does this mean i need to use more plaster or glue? Perhaps a different kind of tape. I am using transparent tape used to seal parcels.
This looks incredible, but I think it looks like it's too delicate and wouldn't hold up very well on a mini base for war gaming. Or is it sturdier than it looks?
Well I didn't use gypsum and I cant get the paint of the tape, trying to painstakingly cutting it out.. but on the bright side its not going to tear apart easily.
I am just watching this video now, this is a wonderful technique! Pardon my ignorance, when you say to add gypsum, do you mean plaster of Paris or just straight gypsum powder?
Sorry but can I do it without gypsum too, because I tried with gypsum vinavil and acrilic paint but it dosn't work. And how long do you left the ferns to dry?. Thanks.
Hi. You can experiment however you like. Without gypsum, the leaves sag over time. Here the main component is carpentry (it is much stronger) PVA glue.
Translation problem. Instead of gypsum there should be plaster.
Superb work. Thank you, i will be trying this at home.
I tried plaster of Paris and it just crumbled. What kind of plaster?
reduce the amount of plaster

Great video. This technique looks fantastic. My question is, don't the gypsum fern leaves break when handling them

Yes. Google translator failed me, so I used plaster
absolutely amazing, but how thick is the wire you use?
Thank you. The thickness depends on the scale and visual perception. Now I'm making a diorama using wire from a spool of burnt out LED lamp.
Genius
Thanks!
Two questions (1) Where can you get gypsum and why is it needed? (2) How long do you let the pain dry before you pull it off the plastic?

Yes
Can you replace Gypsum with plaster powder?
It is the same. Google translator failed at that moment. I use sculpting plaster.
would this work with mica powder as well or just gypsum?
I think it might work. Experiment with a small amount.
Truly a fantastic method! How long does it take to dry?
Thanks. I leave it to dry for 24 hours. For very small parts, 2 hours is enough.
@@baronvonclayawesome! Thanks 😀
does this last? like this looks great but it looks very fragile so, does it stay like that for 2 years+?
I think yes. Over the past 1 year, no changes.

Superb idea. 😮 I assume the gypsum/ plaster is to provide rigidity to the fronds ?
Yes
And the plaster also removes the gloss.
Thank you.
Can make leaves too with it ?
Certainly! You can make them in any shape.
Hello! Can you please tell me what is that yellow block made of?
Hello. This is foamed polystyrene. But it is better to use a silicone mat.

Are you making the leaves on the ground the same way?
No. Watch a video about Nanotyrannus on my channel. That's where I make these leaves.
what kind of wire do you use? regular florist wire? awsome outcome have to try and make palm tree
I use any wire that fits the scale. I found the smallest wire in a wire spool (transformer) from LED light bulbs.
@@baronvonclay btw instead of adhesive tape you can use baking paper :) its siliconed so pva dont stick to it
I know))) I had none of this that night. In the Triceratops video I use a silicone mat. This is the most convenient so far.

You need to first paint the wire with non-liquid paint, dry it, and only then apply the mixture.
