- Exploring the ABANDONED and Muskoka Regional Centre | Abandoned Muskoka Sanitarium
The history of this now abandoned hospital spans over 120 years. The intriguing story of the Muskoka Regional Centre began in the last decade of the 1800s during the rampant global spread of tuberculosis. Gravenhurst is firmly entrenched in the history books as being the first site in Canada and only the third in North America before the turn of the century to treat patients who suffered from tuberculosis

Medical experts preferred Muskoka for its climate and moderate elevation, which provided more oxygen for patients, and was concluded to be unsurpassed by any place on the continent according to doctors. Gravenhurst was specifically liked for its rocky surroundings, dense forests and natural drainage enabling the soil to dry quickly.

On July 5, 1922 a ceremony to lay the cornerstone of the Muskoka Regional Centre took place and the hospital’s official opening day was July 26, 1923.
As treatment and prevention of tuberculosis improved, the sanatorium found itself being less and less needed and as a result no new TB patients were admitted to the Muskoka hospital after June 10, 1960. The facility was sold to the provincial government and was then converted to care for the developmentally challenged and continued to serve the function of a group home until its final closure in 1994.
By 1978, a plan of de-institutionalization was placed on the political agenda and had been carried forward by each political party while in office.
The Muskoka Centre was finally closed in 1994. Some buildings still do witness use by the Ontario Provincial Police for SWAT tactical forced entry training as well as ‘K-9’ Unit training.

My great grandfather ran this hospital - my grandmother as a child lived in a house close by and my great grandfather built her a little cabin in the woods with a wood stove so she could sit and watch the hospital where he worked. As there were many times he couldn’t come home as he was exposed to TB. Thanks for the tour!
Is the cabin still there?
Explored this place back in 2015. Don’t think I’d go back, a little too eerie for me.
This place is huge. Could get lost in there . And wander around for hours or days. Thank you for your great exploring . Have a great day.
Great explore, alittle eerie. This building is huge and glad you were guiding me or I'd still be walking around there!
Awesome decay. Great video and explore!🤗💜Love from New Jersey
I'm glad there are a lot of photos of those boards. A lot of OG explorers on there. 18:06
Thank you Dave. It looks good!
Great video!! Watching from a small town approximately an hour north of Pittsburgh, called Chippewa township, Pennsylvania!! Love your videos!!
that flat tub is for those who can not physically stand up, they lost all control of their muscles. i can never get bored of your videos, and sorry for the ones who do, they shouldn't click on in the first place. that is a very cool hospital
Excellent! Didn't know about this place at all! I personally prefer your lumecube for lighting but awesome video as always! Keep it up!
I live in this town ive never been into this i got to see it first hand
GR8 explore... Looks like Adam Sandler was there!! 😆
Some of that place is a bit spooky. Thanks for bringing it to us. Very much enjoyed the video 👍😃
Love this video thank you my friend
Very cool! You need a tattoo of "what is up guys"!😎
The head lamp is great, I love this video most interesting decayed building I have ever seen I think the metal railing are very interesting
Great video, but I think you lens cap keeps banging against the camera or something. It sounds like it an underwater video.
You don't bore me awesome explorer and I love the drone shots
Hi . I've never heard of the place before. I live near Kingston. Cool explore,, but you should wear a mask . 😃👍🇨🇦
Interesting place great video
What is up guys from Omaha, Nebraska
I enjoyed that explore. I like the pics thrown in. And I loved your commentary as usual. The drone footage was great. I would never have expected it to be on such a beautiful piece of land like that. (Very much worth the wait to see 😉)
Thanks!!
Great areal view.
question, did you just walk past a fence and walk around, i wanna check it out but i don’t wanna get caught trespassing
I used to work there. people should be wearing masks going in there. the asbestos is thick in there. as you walk and touch stuff it becomes airborne. I wish people would be more respectful of the site. people lived here and some souls passed. No one took pics of the solarium...that room was for bedridden clients. there was an auditorium where we did plays for the clients.
Ayo how did you get to the building is there like security anywhere or something
Back up lights are a must also let someone know where you are going and when you will be over due. Safety boots and a hard hat and dust masks also in the good idea bag too. Put on and organge vest and people will think you belong there doing something important and will leave you alone unless they are the ones that are supposed to be there.
Cool job again. Bummer about a Hospital being Abandoned right?
ON-11 Abandoned Shell Station in Gravenhurst & Torrance Abandoned House Freaktography
Before it was a Mental hospital, it was a concentration camp for Nazi's in WWII called Camp Calydor. Before that it was a Tuberculosis Sanatorium & before that it was the Minnewaska Hotel. Now it would make an awesome Air BNB "Resident Evil 4 theme (Killer Nazi's of Calydor) with chainsaws & stuff. You're allowed one weapon, no ammo & a flashlight, retrieve the golden amulet & the key on the 4th floor to the locked door in the basement tunnels to escape .... & GO
i this is a great video wonder where the morgue is in this place ? I thought you went by another name at one point i enjoyed watching ❤❤ stay safe love ya
The morgue was probably closed down and changed into something else. This became an institution for developmentally delayed people. It was closed down along with other institutions.
The tunnels are off of this hallway. 7:09
Hah well now I have to go back for a 4th visit!!!!
You looked scary with the gas mask. This place is so deteriorated I am surprised it has not been demolished. Please be careful .
I have a cottage right by there and I went in it about 3 weeks ago and someone caught us while we were inside so we ran away and then next day we came up and there were boards there
What is that clicking sound in video 🤔dose anybody hear it to
London ont. has a similar empty psychiatric hospital yikes!!
I just bought a house 10 mins from here dave
I went tonight and unfortunately had a run in with a cop outside. Got a fine for trespassing.
what is making that CLICKING noise?!? DAMN
Asbestous and mold will kill ya watch out for critters too bro....be careful
Lol this is a common gig apparently . Oh well , hey its not like things r gettn stolen
Too bad they don't put the property up for sale. It woukd be a beautiful location for a Resort or Spa ! 😃👍🍁
went here and got a ticket 😂
Haha I got featured on a news piece about people trespassing here, I waited and waited for the police to call me but they never did
@@Freaktography funny you say that as the next video i watched was the muskoka news about it
Going there Saturday, I live 25 minutes away!
