  • Exploring the ABANDONED and Muskoka Regional Centre | Abandoned Muskoka Sanitarium
The history of this now abandoned hospital spans over 120 years. The intriguing story of the Muskoka Regional Centre began in the last decade of the 1800s during the rampant global spread of tuberculosis. Gravenhurst is firmly entrenched in the history books as being the first site in Canada and only the third in North America before the turn of the century to treat patients who suffered from tuberculosis

Medical experts preferred Muskoka for its climate and moderate elevation, which provided more oxygen for patients, and was concluded to be unsurpassed by any place on the continent according to doctors. Gravenhurst was specifically liked for its rocky surroundings, dense forests and natural drainage enabling the soil to dry quickly.

On July 5, 1922 a ceremony to lay the cornerstone of the Muskoka Regional Centre took place and the hospital’s official opening day was July 26, 1923.
As treatment and prevention of tuberculosis improved, the sanatorium found itself being less and less needed and as a result no new TB patients were admitted to the Muskoka hospital after June 10, 1960. The facility was sold to the provincial government and was then converted to care for the developmentally challenged and continued to serve the function of a group home until its final closure in 1994.
By 1978, a plan of de-institutionalization was placed on the political agenda and had been carried forward by each political party while in office.
The Muskoka Centre was finally closed in 1994. Some buildings still do witness use by the Ontario Provincial Police for SWAT tactical forced entry training as well as ‘K-9’ Unit training.

My great grandfather ran this hospital - my grandmother as a child lived in a house close by and my great grandfather built her a little cabin in the woods with a wood stove so she could sit and watch the hospital where he worked. As there were many times he couldn’t come home as he was exposed to TB. Thanks for the tour!

      Is the cabin still there?

I enjoyed that explore. I like the pics thrown in. And I loved your commentary as usual. The drone footage was great. I would never have expected it to be on such a beautiful piece of land like that. (Very much worth the wait to see 😉)

I used to work there. people should be wearing masks going in there. the asbestos is thick in there. as you walk and touch stuff it becomes airborne. I wish people would be more respectful of the site. people lived here and some souls passed. No one took pics of the solarium...that room was for bedridden clients. there was an auditorium where we did plays for the clients.

Back up lights are a must also let someone know where you are going and when you will be over due. Safety boots and a hard hat and dust masks also in the good idea bag too. Put on and organge vest and people will think you belong there doing something important and will leave you alone unless they are the ones that are supposed to be there.

Before it was a Mental hospital, it was a concentration camp for Nazi's in WWII called Camp Calydor. Before that it was a Tuberculosis Sanatorium & before that it was the Minnewaska Hotel. Now it would make an awesome Air BNB "Resident Evil 4 theme (Killer Nazi's of Calydor) with chainsaws & stuff. You're allowed one weapon, no ammo & a flashlight, retrieve the golden amulet & the key on the 4th floor to the locked door in the basement tunnels to escape .... & GO

The morgue was probably closed down and changed into something else. This became an institution for developmentally delayed people. It was closed down along with other institutions.
