    "Skid Row" doesn't just introduce the characters and what they want, it shows that Seymore and Audrey are going to come together in their quest to leave Skid Row -- even though they, themselves, can not yet see it.

    The bill Murray scene was to get Orin upset because Bills reaction was not what Orin was wanting, causing him to decide to calm down with the gas mask during Seymours appointment and eventually lead to his death

      Neat Trivia: Bill Murray's character (The masochist patient) was played by JACK EFFING NICHOLSON in the original low budget version.

    I love the theatrical ending because of the character arc it gives Seymour. He's just pushed around and hapless until he realizes that Audrey's love for him is real, not something generated by the plant. He realizes that what he needed had been in him all along, and he takes charge of his life.

      Although someone commented on another lsoh retrospective video that the original ending should have been a nightmare Seymour had while knocked out by the rubble in the theatrical ending is nice, but I have another addition to that: so after Seymour wakes up from the nightmare and uses the exposed cable to defeat Audrey 2, Seymour hugs Audrey and wishes her the very best, knowing fully well that she won’t be seeing him for a long time and hoping that he will see her again someday, as he turns himself to the police. While in jail, Audrey Visits Seymour and they share a last heartwarming moment as Seymour is later in the day, brought on death row and killed.

    If we're talking about the morale of the story, I really like the ending from the original B movie film; everyone should watch that if they haven't (even though it's a lot different than the musical and this movie, it's enjoyable).
    If it's with story wise, I like the theatrical ending. It's really sweet, ties everything together well, and has a big place in my heart.
    But cinematography wise: HOLY CATTLE, THE PUPPETRY!!! I always cry watching the director's cut, cause it's so well made and is just a feat in history and is still remarkable to this very day. I applaud the whole team even trying to do something like that and I'm so glad that I've seen something like that and experience that in my life!

    There's actually 8 songs cut from the film not 5. You forgot "Now (It's just the gas)", "Sominex", and "Don't feed the plants" but they added 2 new songs for the film with "Some Fun Now" and "Mean Green Mother" They also really changed Meek Shall Inherit a lot

    • @katecastreviews4639
      @katecastreviews4639  6 років тому +2

      Augh! How did I miss "It's Just the Gas"?! I went back and checked because I was positive I highlighted it, and I didn't. My bad. I didn't include Sominex because it's really not it's own song, it's just part of the Suppertime reprise that didn't make it into the movie. And Don't Feed the Plants is in it if you watch the original ending, which now with the Blu-Ray is possible. And since I dedicate a good chunk of the review to the original ending, I didn't count it as a cut song. You are right about Meek Shall Inherit, it's just one of those songs that, while I like it, I don't really have anything to say about it. Plus it just kind of comes and goes in the movie, so I thought I could get away with just ignoring it.

  • @lorien42

    The original ending is way too long only because it wasn't used. Had it been used for the film it would have been edited down to a more manageable length and numerous repeat shots (the running dog comes to mind) would have been eliminated.

    I've always loved this movie, even with the Theatrical ending.
    (Also, at the time I had only seen this movie in the French dubbed version, which I can't watch anymore... As much as all uselessly dubbed movies.)
    But then I discovered there was a Director's Cut and, since then it has been my favorite Musical ever!
    Until the DC, my favorite was Grease.
    I still love Grease, but Little Shop's DC is really awesome!
    Cheers from France! 🍻
    PS: "Suddenly Seymour" is a good love song, but my favorite will always be the on at the fight scene "Big Green Mother" (don't remember the actual title).
    *Edit*
    After thinking about it, should it come out nowadays, having the Theatrical released first to please most audiences and then release a Director's Cut for the Blu-Ray would be a good option... As they did with the original version.

      PintSizedPicasso I think Seymour took the front door because he wanted closure with Audrey II. At one point of the movie, (before Feed Me) We are shown Seymour stroking Audrey II and talking to it before he knows it can talk, which shows a connection between the two. Seymour raised Audrey II, and Audrey II was all he thought he had. So I think Seymour knew he could have gone out the back door, but wanted closure with Audrey II, but didn’t turn out how he wanted.

    I'm glad people are getting into this movie. I fell in love when it first came out to theaters. I would've hated the stage play ending in the context of the movie version. I feel like they could have used the mass destruction scenes as a sequence of Seymour imagining it when the salesman says it could go worldwide. Mean Green Mother beats Don't Feed the Plants imho. I wish it got the Oscar that year.

    The happy ending works for the movie, while the bad ending works for the plays.
    And there's a third & neutral ending if you count the original low budget film, where Audrey lives & Seymour unintentionally gets himself killed while trying to destroy the plant from the inside, becoming a flower part of Audrey 2.

  • @hatchetmouth8211
    @hatchetmouth8211 3 роки тому +2

    Not only do I prefer the Rick Moranis version, but I prefer the theatrical ending where Seymour and Audrey get a happy ending. The point of a good story isn't to see a likeable main character perish or lose, but teeter ever further on the edge of perishing, but prevail against all odds. That just makes a better story than the main character was just another schmo who was in over his head against the big evil.

    • @MisterG2323
      @MisterG2323 3 роки тому

      That schmo allowed a man (admittedly a demented one) to die, and then desecrated the corpse by chopping it up to feed it to a carnivorous plant. He then purposefully lured another man to a horrible death in the maw of that same plant, to cover his own guilty ass. Those are not the actions of an innocent man, let alone a likeable one. That's why the filmmakers were careful to show a baby Audrey II in the garden at the very end, to show that Seymour hasn't gotten away with his crimes; sooner or later, the devil will have his due.

    • @MisterG2323
      @MisterG2323 3 роки тому +2

      Could be Seymour just refers to plants in general as female, plus he named it after a female, so there's that. I think the reference (other than to set up the laugh line) is meant to show Seymour's desire to nurture the real Audrey; he transfers that impulse to the plant, going so far as to make blood sacrifices to it/her. When you get right down to it, Seymour is not a healthy boy. 😉

      I grew up with the happy ending - watched in multiple times a week in the theatres until they stopped showing it. But that ending never did sit with me well - it felt too contrived, anticlimactic, almost like an afterthought. It wasn't until some years later, when I acquired the soundtrack album (and shortly thereafter, the sheet music - yay!), that I discovered extra songs to go with an obviously different ending - which also seemed to fit the story better.
      But the actors suit their parts, the comedic timing was on the money, and the music was perfectly suited in range, emotional content and suitability to the storyline - and that's why this will always be one of my all-time favourites. :-)

    Awesome review of my favourite movie! I love how you admire how groundbreaking the puppetry is,some people may disagree but I think Audrey 2 and the original endings special fx is the best EVER put to cinema, "the thing 1982" is at number 2

  • @SweenyTodd98
    @SweenyTodd98 6 років тому +6

    I think a problem with the film adaptation is that it leans more heavily towards the comedy and doesn't really let the serious moments hit as often. The play balanced the comedy and the seriousness a lot better by acknowledging that what Seymour was doing was terrible. The movie also doesn't give Seymour's choices the seriousness that it should, the play makes a big deal out of Seymour choosing to continue making money off of the plant after two people have died while the movie kind of brushes past that and ignores Seymour kind of becoming a villain. By doing this the original ending feels more abruptly dark and almost out place in the movie. Also it's a little more disturbing to see Seymour be slowly pulled into Audrey II's mouth rather than charging in in an attempt to kill it.

    • @isaacdutton8464
      @isaacdutton8464 5 років тому +1

      Yeah I saw something where they were performing Feed Me (Git it) and The guy who played Seymour was also the voice of the plant, which also kinda proves that the plant is in his mind and he uses it to cope with the murders. And I think the plant almost eating Audrey means him almost killing her and then realizing then stopping himself.

  • @JonathanIFrank
    @JonathanIFrank 5 років тому +4

    I still prefer the original tragic ending (even though the rampaging plants scene is a bit too long). It forces you to really think about the consequences of metaphorically selling your soul. Plus, the music and cinematography when Seymour feeds Audrey to the plant is the best in the movie. However, your defense of the happy ending is the best I've heard, and I never really considered that point. It's definitely a better argument than "I liked Seymour and Audrey, and it's a bummer they died." Awesome review!
    Side note: I've heard they are remaking Little Shop of Horrors. Apart from adding in some of the cut songs from the stage version, I don't know what they hope to improve over this one. I shudder to think what CGI Audrey II will look like (almost definitely worse than the puppet). At least we might get to hear Mushnik sing.

    • @DarthWinterMadness
      @DarthWinterMadness 5 років тому

      Unless they go into R-rated territory with Practical Effects, I have no interest into a Remake for this movie.
      The Director's Cut is completely enough for me, and this movie is damn near perfect (especially for an adaptation of a musical)!
      Peace from France! 🍻

    In regards to the ending I'd like to quote Daniel Webster from "The Devil and Daniel Webster"
    "Gentlemen of the jury, it is the eternal right of every man to raise his fist against his fate. But when he does, these are crossroads. You took the wrong turn. So did Jabez Stone. But he found it out in time. He's here tonight to save his soul."
    Seymour like the mentioned Jabez Stone who sold his soul to a devil for money, realized just in the nick of time what he had nearly unleashed and what it had nearly cost him. Yeah he definitely took a few wrong turns but in the end nearly got himself killed putting a stop to it also.
    I'd also like to think of that little Audrey 2 we see at the end as a metaphor. There'll always be a temptation to take the easy route for fortune and fame. Waiting quietly for some one to grasp at it. And sadly sooner or later some one will find that plant...provided Seymour doesn't mow that part of his lawn first.

    Christal, Ronette, and Chiffon serve as a Greek chorus, which is of course a long-standing tradition for stage plays. What sets them apart from a traditional Greek chorus is that at times they are visible characters in addition to serving as an invisible chorus. Masterful!

    agree, i'm of two minds about the ending.. i would have liked seymour and audrey to die, but i don't mind the "happy ending" either.. basically it comes down to editing/pacing for me. like you said, the original ending we've seen is waaay too long (although i'm not convinced we've ever really seen what would have been a FINAL final cut of it).. the last thing you want is for audiences to get bored during your big finale (particularly when the rest of the film is so well staged/paced).. i do think there could have been a way to make the original ending work (again, with some serious editing), but the happy ending we ended up with feels well paced and the subversive little wink at the end puts the perfect little button on it.

    I understand the point about the original ending and that it's in the stage show but I prefer the happy ending since the rest of the movie is more of a dark comedy, so it doesn't make sense to have such a serious ending. Also the ending song is not catchy like the rest of the songs and the song ends early on the the music and scene keep going. It just doesn't fit the feel of the rest of the movie.

    • @katecastreviews4639

      Yeah the original ending does drag. I think they were just having a little too much fun with those amazing practical effects. You do make a good point about the happy ending. Personally I prefer that one too, and I did try to make a case for it here. Both are fine, it just seems to be a matter of preference. Thanks so much for the comment!

    • @creativevisiongaming
      @creativevisiongaming 6 років тому +1

      I disagree the original ending is not fine at all. The effects look cool but I just don't care because I watch this movie for 2 things, the great songs and the laughs, which the original ending is lacking in. Since I don't take the rest of the movie seriously, a preachy ending doesn't work. I would argue that the original ending was not thought out that well, but perfected after it was changed. And the new ending provides much better closure to "Somewhere that's Green" than Audrey wanting to be fed to Audrey 2, which is too unbelievable even for this movie.
      Just saying it's more than just preference that makes it better. Also no one wants to see Rick Moranis Die in any movie lol.

    • @SweenyTodd98
      @SweenyTodd98 6 років тому +2

      I think that is the big difference between the movie and the stage show. The movie leaned more towards the comedy while the play balanced the comedy and the darkness allowing for the serious moments to hit more and feel more dark and we get more focus on the seriousness of his choices. By not doing it in the movie it created a more abrupt change at the end. Personally I prefer the original dark ending as it's much more shocking and while the destruction does go on too long it's still cool to watch. I find the happy ending to be just boring and I don't like Seymour getting away with multiple murders with barely any consequences.

    What a great review :D During these difficult times with Covid-19 I somehow ended up watching it again and loving every minute of it. My favourite song is Skid Row; such a marvellous gem and it checks all the boxes of a terrific musical song and always sends shivers down my spine. Have you read the latest news that they are going to remake Little Shop of Horrors? Chris Evans is already in talks to play the dentist. I honestly don't know what to think of it, but perhaps the remake will bring more recognition to this brilliant classic

      I disagree
      In act 1 the songs are fun but aren’t that impactful
      In act 2 the songs add EXTRA IMPACT!

      No, you don’t. The tone of the movie leans more comedic, so the happier ending is more justified.

    Audrey 2 is referred to as “she” and doesn’t present as any other gender. She’s female with Levi Stubb’s voice.

      Granted, the vaginal symbolism is pretty obvious, but given that it's an *alien* plant, its gender is superfluous. Most likely it's a hermaphrodite. Notice it sprouted little podlings all by its lonesome.

    I seen the original play back around 1981 or 82 and recall Ellen Greens singing to be the show stopper and Seymore you take him or leave him. I think the Seymore in the play was closer to the 1960 movie. Allot of the Musical numbers were to long in the play , towards the end of the play I didn't care who died. The Movie made you Fall in love with Seymore & Audrey and want the two come together as well as have Audrey's dream of a little house some where come true. I watched the Directors cut and didn't like the demise of two lovable characters, Nice for a goofy Play but not for a Movie like this... Movie ending was Deserving to Audrey.

    I love this film. Even though there’s a a couple of major issues story telling wise in both cuts of the film which gets over looked two that covered in the play on does not get covered in any version. Is the film not explaining how Audrey was not aware of musnicks death until the very ending of the directors cut and in the theatrically cut musnick deaths is not referenced directly after the super time number. In the play it’s mentioned in cut dialogue that takes place I think after the meek will inherit Seymour had lied to Audrey about mr. Musnick saying he left a note saying he had to leave the country and was supposed to be away In Czechia because Audrey the stereotypical hot dumb blond girl stereotype. Also some how Audrey 2 knows Audrey the co workers phone number which is not explain. Though here death scene in the play when it comes to what maybe here go to the shop is some what not complete explain. It’s explained in lyricks to super time/somexack Audrey mentions she had taken sleeping pills and she was hearing voices in here head telling here to go to the flower shop to see Seymour implied maybe that she had a bad reaction our the plant had telephaic abilities not shown prior. In the original 60 films did something near the very ending of the film Audrey junior randomly manages decided to put Seymour in a hypnotic voice activated trance to make him go aquirr an escort to be junior second to last meal because seymour was being that hesitant to comply.

  • @CheziahKatt
    @CheziahKatt Рік тому

    i think you're kind of neglecting the fact that the whole thing is a huge metaphor for capitalism and consumerism. and seymour DID give in. The plant (capitalism) tells him it NEEDS the blood, FRESH blood - but it doesnt have to be his own. And at first Seymour says no, thats unethical. And the plant bargains. It shows him (in this it is explicit that the plant turns him to the window) and says "what about this exception?" - and once he fed into that exception he began to see other forms of sacrifice as okay. He willingly got Mushnik to go to the plant (though it's more explicit in the theatre version). Mushnik had ulterior motives, but he still wasn't hurting someone directly - he was just willing to rat out Seymour.
    it's notable too that carnivorous plants specifically grow in low nutrient soil. when they eat insects they arent using that for energy - they use sunlight for that. they're using insects/blood as nutrients/fertilizer. capitalism NEEDS the blood of its subjects to keep itself going. it has no nutrients of it's own.

    Bill murrays role in the movie is based on a no joke jack nicholson role from the 60’s version
    Jack “i was the joker and Jack freakin torrence” nicholson, was in a roger corman low budget movie about a killer plant where he played a character with a pain fetish
    Also i dont agree with what happened to mr mushnick
    He was not at all a bad person in the movie. Yet he “deserved to die” according to audrey 2 and seymour at that moment.
    And last note, it is stated in the movie that “the audrey 2 is not a healthy GIRL”
    Seymour says its a girl in one of the first lines since her introduction....
    Why was this a discussion again?

    So he felt bad about it if i felt bad about killing some one that doesn't mean it does not make the fact that he murdered some one so he did NOT kill orin he still fed his dead body to a plant and he killed mushnik a man he once called his father. Oh but bom o what about the whole world well they commit murder to as said in the song don't feed the plants and it is a importin massage that in life people would probably murder people for fam and money. so the new ending let aman get away with murder and it get rid of a great message and it tells people they can live a good life if you commit murder but you feel bad about it.

      This is on the money. LSoH is properly a classic Greek tragedy and absolutely demands the "unhappy" ending. It's tricked out with comedic touches to make the underlying themes easier to accept. Seymour is the flawed hero, the Oedipus who defies the gods and is brought low for his hubris. He allows his love/lust for Audrey to move him to manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, and then to outright murder (death by flytrap!) and finally in the original and proper theatrical climax, the inadvertent death of his inamorata and more corpse abuse, then *finally* finally his own suicide and the evil plant's ultimate triumph. It's all of a piece: seduced by greed and lust, Seymour pays the ultimate price. (Theatre audiences could handle this because when all was said and done, the actors always came out and took their bows--see, folks? It's all just a darkly funny morality play, nobody got hurt--whereas cinema test audiences didn't get that relief and didn't like that one bit, which is why Warner Bros. dropped that chunk of change to splice on the happy ending that movie audiences expected).
