You should have a third, unopened bottle as a control, so when you try the wine after a month, cyou can compare both systems against the original, to ensure that after a month, the wine from both winesaver methods are the same as compared to the original.
@Dr. Matthew Horkey I just opened my second box of ten repour stoppers since learning about them from this video a little over a month ago. I have always been a one bottle at a time person due to the cost of the wines I like. My wife and I hosted several celebrations with birthdays, anniversaries, a college graduation, and a friend's retirement from the U.S. Navy. Since I had the box of repours, I was a little..., no, rather a lot more liberal with the number of bottles opened. These were very special occasions for friends and family, all who I love and admire. As the Washington state wine maker, Charles Smith says, "It's wine. Just drink it." It would have been disheartening after one dinner to have half bottles of Chardonnay, Reisling, a Rosé, Pinot Noir, and a Merlot all go bad. But the Repour stoppers really worked, and not a drop of that wine went bad. After one of the dinners, the ladies were all sitting around the table playing cards and talking, and my wife asked me to let them try some White Pinot Noir that I had just received from Emeritus Vineyards. They drank two bottles down as if it was ice water, and they just crawled in from the desert, and they wanted more. Instead, I poured them each a little Kung-Fu Girl, after which they had enough wine. Kung-Fu Girl might be an inexpensive Reisling, but my wife and I enjoy it, and repour stoppers are relatively inexpensive, so we were able to enjoy the remaining half bottle the following week, with sandwiches. We have never opened so much wine before in a single month, but we had a lot of fun, and spread cheer to the ones we love, so it was worth it to us. And thanks to these stoppers, there was nothing wasted. I really like them.
I'd love the get a Coravin. I use Repour all the time. I often blind taste at home and open 5 or 6 bottles at once, but since my wife doesn't really drink much, the Repours really come in handy so I can blind taste, and then spend the next week or two drinking the bottles. Great product.
One thing I might try with the Repour is if the last glass or so stays as fresh. I have found a couple times my very bottom of the bottle was a little off, so I might drink the last 1/3 at once from now on
Interesting comparison. We have a small (100 cases/yr) winery. So I have the advantage of all the winemaking equipment. I will take a partially empty bottle and blow some CO 2 in to exhaust the air and then recork the bottle with a floor corker. We believe any inert gas works - argon or nitrogen or carbon dioxide. You can purchase some small pressurized bottles of inert gas via Amazon and blow out the air from a partial bottle and then stuff the old cork back in as far as possible. That works fine and is probably the most practical (and least expensive) way to preserve a nice bottle for the average person.
I like to keep some screw cap half bottles around. Fill up the bottle and presto! a new bottle of wine. Keeps fresh for a long time. Just slap on a label to identify the wine. One question about the Pivot and Repour, do the bottles need to be standing upright or can they be put on their sides? The extra height of the bottle with the devices may be too tall for a refrigerator.
@Richard--I do the same , but with regular 375ml bottles. Then push the cork of the wine you're drinking into the 375ml, to know what is in the bottle in 2-4 weeks from now. My system is faster, but yours is foolproof for dealing with generic corks & screwcaps.
Great video. Here in the UK, a pack of 10 Repour cost £55/$60! So totally unviable. With the Pivot, I can preserve 4 bottles of wine for around £1.85/$2 each (initial device outlay not included). I like the idea of Repour but it’s just too costly this side of the pond.
what I do is re bottle the wine into a smaller bottle (right up to the neck) and seal it with a cheap vacuum stopper. works well and is the cheapest option for me. but its not very intuitive cause you need exact proportions and would need way too many small bottles if you are preserving lots of wine.
Matthew, thanks for doing the head to head. However, you omitted something quite important important in this experiment and that's the control, which should have been a 3rd bottle, opened just like these two, and stored with the original cap alongside these two. It would have confirmed even more convincingly the benefit of these two devices if the control bottle oxidized and you were able to identify it easily!
@@drmatthewhorkey totally understand....logistics. just saying bc there's a reason why the most trusted scientific studies use blinding ( which you do) and controls.
Have not tried coravin systems yet but I have been using repour for a while now. In my experience, the wine stays good for 7-10 days. And I have tried repour on many and multiple style wines. I am going to give the pivot a try and see if it lasts longer
Great video Matthew, but I must humbly confess, no open bottle of mine survives the day let alone a month ;-) . No need for wine saving systems. Great for pro's though.
I have the repour and I do like it. If I know I may use it again in a week I put the opened on into a bottle filled to the top with water until I use it again
I buy the capsules on the french version of Craigslist when they come up for a good price (Usually buy them at under 4€/capsule). People buy the Coravin and barely use it so they sell all of their capsules.
Be very careful! I bought the argon capsules on Amazon and they were counterfeit. The next day, all my wine oxidized badly. I only buy direct from the manufacturer from then on
@@anthonyng8800 they are officially branded Coravin capsules still in box. I'll make sure to weigh them upon reception to make sure they're not used capsules. Sellers on this platform also have a rating system to avoid scams. Transactions go through the platform as well. Of course this tip is pretty local to France!
I use the Coravin needle system. If I were interested in incorporating Repour, under what circumstance might you use one over the other and vice versa?
@@drmatthewhorkey I find the Argon capsules are fairly expensive. However, I have a higher Coravin model, so never uncork bottles though (which is amazing!). Would you recommend incorporating Repours for bottles that I want to uncork to last me 1-4 weeks?
Have you ever used a system like Vacuvin - suck out the air? I use it sometimes for next day consumption. Works well for me since once I open up a bottle it's usually gone that same day and occasionally next day.
Your wine descriptions are so informative and honest. Now I want to buy a 24-36 bottle wine cooler with duo controls around $ 500. What is your experience for wine storage coolers.
Hahahah I actually don’t have experience with them since I have a natural cellar. There are some YT reviews of them out there. I think theh would be much better than fridge or a closet
Thanks for sharing. In my case I've stopped buying bottle of wines since my wife got pregnant 😢 . I just can't have more than two glasses, most of the time one glass. I was looking at some alternatives to not waste so much money when throwing away the rest of my wine. It's quite expensive to get those devices down here in Argentina so im thinking of buying at least 3 smaller bottles that can hold one glass of wine each. Do you think this could work? I will fill them up to the very top to avoid the least oxigen in them.🤞
2 questions (1) Does the Repour impart a chemical taste to the wine (this is mentioned in some of the reviews on Amazon)?; and (2) Is the rubber/silicone wine stopper on the Coravin Pivot really hard to take off? (a UA-cam review mentioned this, as did someone on Reddit). Thanks in advance.
No if repour did give chemical taste it’s because the person put the bottle on the side (you have to store upright) and rubber stoppers can be tight on some bottles but not a deal breaker
@@drmatthewhorkey Thank you. Decisions decisions! As a causal wine drinker, I am still on the fence about which one to buy!! Guess I will start with Repour since the initial outlay is minimal.
Can’t say enough good things about Repour! In fact, I probably have a Repour problem since I have about 25 bottles currently open from various tastings that I need to go back and finish 😂. Amazing bang for the buck over time.
Bob Paulinsky, MW presented a product called PrivatePreserve in a short on his channel, it's basically just a bottle of inert gas that you spray into an open wine bottle. I guess it's kind of similar to a Coravin, but without the needle, there are similar products from other brand as well. Do you have any experience with something like that? It sounds as it might work and it's much cheaper than other systems.
So I have a Coravin. I'm pretty sure I'm using it right, I can't think of anything else I could do differently. And I swear after a couple days I can totally taste a unique "Coravin" flavor. Curious if anybody else has ever experienced this or if it's just me.
With the needle system or the Pivot? I do notice with the needle system, if bottles are under storage for more than a few months... the first glass is a little funny. Not quite oxidized but unique, I just dump the first glass and the rest of the bottle is great.
$8=5bottles. Repour $12.50=5bottles. Delta $4.50. $80 for coravin device you would have to use ~18 Coravin cartridges to break even with the device price. That's ~90 bottles of wine to break even and save with Coravin... I think
