I learnt to drive on a 1967 model David Brown 990. I helped my father to extend the air intake back to behind the exhaust, and to put steel plate down both side of the engine to protect everything from sticks and trees. The tractor was fitted with a massive under slung dozer blade and front grill. The rear wheels had solid weight hubs and were turned out for maximum width. We used it on steep country to clear light scrub. The center of gravity was so low the tractor would slide sideways down a hill. One had to constantly monitor for rabbit hole on the downhill side and mounds and rocks on the uphill side. It was the biggest tractor in the district at the time. A great tractor.
