  • This week we share a fascinating discussion between Tore Klevjer and Lindy, both passionate advocates for victims of cultic harm, who also each have complementary roles in organizations which support leavers. Tore shares about his experience of being recruited into a group, and how he found his way out ten years later with his family. In this episode the duo discuss regrets, doubts and shame, and how to find a way forward as a family unit - while staying intact - after leaving a cult.

I do feel some remorse and sadness over raising my kids as jws, which restricted their opportunities for personal growth and education in many ways. Family is the most valuable thing I have, so it hurts me to think I might have damaged it. One of the most sad things I became aware of as a jw was teens leading double lives. Open and honest communication between jw parents and their kids isn't possible. A teen will often not express doubts or their desire not to be a jw, to the parents, for fear of being rejected and abandoned by them. Therefore, they hide their actual life from their parents and are cut off from their guidance. So many jw families are strangers to each other. And that makes me very sad. Online support groups are full of such young people hiding from their parents. Parents who end up shunning their kids will downplay their cruelty quoting Jesus words that he came not to bring peace but a sword, and that anyone loving their family more than him is not worthy of him. So the Bible also plays a role in the destruction of family.
