Hi everyone! A lot has changed the past few years and I've made a NEW version WITHOUT MUSIC on darktable 4.6! Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/ucjAmTMIEOI/v-deo.html

Thank you so much for this awesome compliment man! These are the things that keep me going, I really appreciate that! If you ever run into issues or would like to see a tutorial about a certain topic, let me know!
I downloaded Darktable the other day and have spent most of my time clicking on modules and not getting very far so thank you for a brilliant and clear explanation to how things work. Looking forward to your next 100 videos 😊
Just discovered your channel. I was about to bite the bullet and just get Lightroom. Then this true masterclass appeared. Now I'm hooked on your channel. Thanks.
Good lesson, thank you. I finally came to the end of the road with my old Photoshop and Lightroom non subscription versions when I changed computers this week. I hate the Adobe subscription model, it's expensive and it doesn't suit my needs any more (I'm an ex professional photographer, still like taking pics but I'm not going to pay Adobe prices). I was worried about managing and processing RAW files without Lightroom, but Darktable looks really good and not too daunting to learn. I'm now using Affinity and Darktable, both excellent programs, one free and one extremely reasonably priced. Thanks to all the people that put Darktable together and continue to improve it, you are doing a brilliant job.
Rico, your tutorials are super helpful! I am a new Darktable user and your videos have reduced my learning curve immensely. Thank you, and looking forward to learning more!

Thank you for you question Zachery. Do you mean reflections as in seeing a person or seeing your hand holding a camera or do you mean different reflections?
Great videos Rico. I am finding the background music a bit distracting. Do you have the video uploaded without background music. Keep up the good work. Subd
Awesome tutorials, could you make a video on cropping images for standard printing aspect rations (print shops, e.g. 24x30, etc...)? I am struggling with it and finally found something on GIMP.
I really like this video, but I'm hard of hearing so I like to use the auto-generated closed captions. Unfortunately, that feature is set to Dutch, which makes the subtitles come out pretty strange. There's no way I can change it, so I think maybe it's a setting you have to change, Rico(?) I'd appreciate it; thank you!
Question... when I toggle the over and under exposed yours shows red and blue mine shows black and white is there a way for me to change to red and blue?? Hope you understand what I'm trying to say..
Hi, thanks, terrific video. Just wondering if you have any views on Raw Therapee. As compared to Darktable that is. I’d like to start with one of these and I am finding it hard to decide. Thanks!
Hey Rico, thank you for all this good content! I wanted to ask you, how did you manage to get file types in the lighttable view? Many thanks for the answer in advance!
Thank you for asking! Unfortunately there's not. You might be able to sharpen it a little bit using the sharpen module but that won't fix it completely. Programs like darktable are awesome to help good images become better but they can't turn bad images into perfect ones.
Hey Rico, thanks for your videos. I'm just getting started with darktable and its a huge help to see it used before jumping in. One thing that's bugging me is that in my copy of Darktable (2.6.2) all the interface elements are really large. This includes interface text, images/icons, modules, the entire top bar including the Darktable logo. It makes everything feel bloated. One good example of this is the text "lighttable | darkroom | other". On your screen that all fits neatly within the space of the right column, but on my screen the text is so large that "lighttable" is in the middle section. (I hope that makes sense) My theories why it looks so much better on your screen are 1) my screen size is 15" perhaps on larger screens the text size is the same so it takes up a smaller percentage of space, 2) I'm using the Mac version, perhaps the Mac version just looks bloated for some reason, or 3) there may be settings that I've not found that make the interface elements smaller? Do you have any thoughts or ideas to reduce the interface size?
Hello Benk, thank you for your question. What's the resolution of your monitor? My "view" is the same with the 15,6" laptop screen as is it with my 27" 4k monitor. Have you tried going into the settings menu of darktable and change some things around there? It's the gear icon on the right top of the "liveview" (if that makes sense)
Hey @@RicoResolves , thanks for your fast reply!! My monitor is actually 15.4-inch and the resolution is 2880 x 1800. No other software has the bloated interface issue and I can't find anything relevant in the settings. Thanks for the suggestion though. Let me know if you have any other thoughts :)
Please have a look here, is this your issue? github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/2615?fbclid=IwAR11FMMvwgVWhObSCD5lbDbZ4D_JycL57vHsGAVMT2CM6yqz5-uKjH_wdxE
Thanks for great tutorial. I am novice user and this really helped. I want to add watermarks on my images. I know how to add watermark in darktable, and I have SVG file prepared, but there is an issue. Watermark does not look good on every picture. While I use Photoshop, I resolve this by adding custom stroke (usually black, white or grey) or shadow on watermark image to match photo. In darktable I cannot find way how to do it. Is there some missing tool for that?
Hi Rico. Thanks for this tutorial. I'm considering a switch from Lightroom 5 to Darktable, as I don't intend to pay Adobe a monthly subscription. Is there any way to import the Lightroom catalogue (including edits) in Darktable? Or would I lose all my editing in Lightroom for sure? Thanks!
@@RicoResolves Thanks for your quick reply. I have no clue... I'm not a specialist... I have DNG files in my photo folders, do they contain the LR edits?
Thanks to Todd Prior: lm.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fmathiashueber.com%2Fmigrate-from-lightroom-to-open-source-alternative%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR0-4bUIyM6c-ECodY0sSrFIfW7lHmm_4u104kIkuMNw4Gb3zzTDdfaudiI&h=AT1-jcVU9Tg3ZedbtLDr-AE9dRDTLOaSdDFqX9ETp2-kLuqIkpHTqOer19yeQ-7YozZZLp4GXLyZtaqHeor1qPo70YLkBToAS5jz_2BdFsNgTpoHSzZh7dl8P6RJONIJblgDYaP2B9wwnDQ
When you start to edit an image, your history shows only original as a step, mine on the otherhand, applied 12 filters automatically, how do I disable them on the start. I also like to start on very original image.
Why didn't they think that not everybody uses a mouse with a scroll wheel. I've always been using a trackball, there is no scroll wheel, so how am I supposed to do those operations?
Thank you for your feedback Behram, is the music too loud with speakers and headphones or just with speakers and/or headphones and/or laptop speakers? Looking forward to your reply so I can address this problem accordingly :)!
Thank you! I will listen to my videos through a headphone and adjust the volume accordingly! I have a preset for my audio tracks but not every audio track is recorded at the same volume I think (music). I'll try to pay more attention to that! Thanks again 👍
Hi Rico! Amazing resource for those who wants to start using darktable. I'm shifting from lightroom because of their absurd subscription pricing and it seems like darktable is just as capable to do what I need. One question I have tho is that when I bring in photos to lightroom, the color, contrast, sharpness is all applied basically mimics the jpeg version of the photo. But when I use darktable, the raw photo imported seems flat. Is this because darktable imports the true raw form of the photo taken?
Great to see you here Gabriel, and great to hear you're making the switch! I truly hope darktable will cover everything you need! Darktable imports true RAW files and adds a base curve when it recognizes your camera. Usually the layers are: 1. Original, 2. Orientation and 3. Base curve. For the RAW file in its truest form, you can click the first history. Since you're switching over from Lightroom, have a look at this video and let me know if that helped you get started too: ua-cam.com/video/1FCcYbMEV0k/v-deo.html
Currently trying to edit a photo but the adjustments I've made to the color applies to the image on the preview on the top left and doesn't appear on the image on the center. When I double click on the image on the bottom that's active that's the only time the color changes are applied. And when I adjust any module the color becomes flat again. Is there something wrong on how I have darktable setup?
@@gabrielpaulocristobal5367 have you made sure to edit after the last step? Can you email me your image and xmp file to enterthevlogosphere@gmail.com? I'll have a look for you when I'm home to see what's up :). If the file is to big for email, please use wetransfer.
Hi Rico. Morganti sent me here. downloaded the version for Mac. I am trying to get my RAW pics from my SD card into darkroom. It is not recognising it nor any external drive. Am I missing something? It is very important for me to store pics outside Mac due to space constraints.
Hello Daiva, thank you for your question! Did you unlock your SD card? Does your MAC recognize the SD card? Let's start with that. Because if your MAC doesn't recognize it, darktable won't either. Let me know :)!
@@RicoResolves Yes my card is unlocked. I use it normally with Lightroom and Photoshop. Also, it is not recognising the external drive. I have tons of pictures there. My mac recognised these, its only darkroom that is not. I am seeing in the Lightable --scan for external devices-- it is not responding and says no external devices found. Very surprising.
Thank you for clarifying. Please go to the light table menu, and click the: "import" or "import folder" option. Check and see if you can access the SD card that way. It works for me so it might work for you.
@@RicoResolves Tried that as well Rico. Even the other locations plus sign it only shows My mac, no card or drives. Guess in Mac, Darkroom has to work on this, there is no option for bringing in pictures directly into darkroom nor export to external drive directly it has to come first into Mac and then for exporting also from a local drive later all outside of Darkroom. I am thinking it is a bug if so they can rectify it ASAP as it will be useless for such a nice program to ask people to do these extra steps.
Hi Rico,my Darktable 3.2 on Mac OS.after loading, the tab Darkroom worked great. After a while, the darkroom tab does not display the modules panel .Updated to version 3.4, but to no @t modules (histogram etc).Looks like I'm very dumb and can't solve a simple problem.Sorry about my English. I tried, but with Davinci Resolve it's a hassle. So I decided to use a highlighted mouse pointer in future videos!
Thank you buddy

Could you make tutorial on removing or reducing eye glasses reflections in dark table?
Thank you for you question Zachery. Do you mean reflections as in seeing a person or seeing your hand holding a camera or do you mean different reflections?
I think I'll try DT. But why does the image in the video have a gray band on the entire left side? Thanks
That is actually a wall I stood behind.
Great videos Rico. I am finding the background music a bit distracting. Do you have the video uploaded without background music. Keep up the good work. Subd
Hi Mark, welcome to the channel! This video should help you along the way:

Awesome tutorials, could you make a video on cropping images for standard printing aspect rations (print shops, e.g. 24x30, etc...)? I am struggling with it and finally found something on GIMP.
Would you like a tutorial in GIMP or darktable?
@@RicoResolves Preferably in Darktable, appreciate if you could cover bunch of things related to printing, it will be great.
Hi, Anthony Morganti sent me here - looking for an alternative to Lightroom - this might be it - thanks.
Welcome Hamish! I appreciate you being here. If you have questions about darktable or suggestions for tutorials, please let them know!
It's probably because I've set the original sound to English. I'll look into this!
Question... when I toggle the over and under exposed yours shows red and blue mine shows black and white is there a way for me to change to red and blue?? Hope you understand what I'm trying to say..
Thank you for your question! I know what you mean, but unfortunately I don't know how to change it.
@@RicoResolves ok no worries I'll try to find out
Really it was amazing
Thanks for good one videon.
Thank you for watching!
Very useful. What about spot removal?
It's a great tool!
Hi, thanks, terrific video. Just wondering if you have any views on Raw Therapee. As compared to Darktable that is. I’d like to start with one of these and I am finding it hard to decide. Thanks!
I've never tried Rawtherapee before, but darktable gives me everything I need

Very good

Hey Rico, thank you for all this good content! I wanted to ask you, how did you manage to get file types in the lighttable view? Many thanks for the answer in advance!
Hi, thanks! Did you figure it out yet? You can check the "image information" and see all the details!
Hey, how do you make the tag in each of the photos to appear (JPG, NEF)?? I can't find it anywhere. Love the vid btw.
Thanks!

@@RicoResolves Thanks a lot man
why won't darktable load on my macbook pro 2011. I have 16G ram and plenty of hard drive space.
Does it give you an error code?
@@RicoResolves Just says unable to load. Tried 3 times
Thanks Rico I just did a photo shoot where my setting off, blurry 😒. I'm new to darktable is there a way to fix them?
(I hope that makes sense)
My theories why it looks so much better on your screen are 1) my screen size is 15" perhaps on larger screens the text size is the same so it takes up a smaller percentage of space, 2) I'm using the Mac version, perhaps the Mac version just looks bloated for some reason, or 3) there may be settings that I've not found that make the interface elements smaller?
@@BenkArtist No problem! I have forwarded your question to the guys over at pixls.us. I'll get back to you on this!

Thank you Deepak! I'll see what I can do. The next two tutorials are already scheduled. Thank you for your suggestion, I'll get to work!
good job m8!
Thanks!
The darktable watermark tool isn't very sophisticated if you ask me. I'd use a different program to do that :)
You can "watermark" your photos by adding metadata too
@@RicoResolves that's bad news :(
Thanks!
Hello David, welcome to my channel! Are your edits stored in an xmp?
@@RicoResolves Thanks for your quick reply. I have no clue... I'm not a specialist... I have DNG files in my photo folders, do they contain the LR edits?
@@daviddechamps8840 the DNG files are the RAW files. So they are not the side containers. I'll get back to you on this, I'll ask a friend.

When you start to edit an image, your history shows only original as a step, mine on the otherhand, applied 12 filters automatically, how do I disable them on the start. I also like to start on very original image.
Go to the step you want to save, and then select: "compress history".

hello sir ...is there a big difference between 2.6 and 2.7?
A lot Sol! I like the RGB Curves module in 2.7 a lot.
Why didn't they think that not everybody uses a mouse with a scroll wheel. I've always been using a trackball, there is no scroll wheel, so how am I supposed to do those operations?
I guess to do the equivalent?
@@RicoResolves yeah? what equivalent? there ain't one.
Background music too loud and distracting. Otherwise a good starting point.
Thank you for your feedback Behram, is the music too loud with speakers and headphones or just with speakers and/or headphones and/or laptop speakers? Looking forward to your reply so I can address this problem accordingly :)!
Hi Rico. I was watching this video on a Samsung tablet using a Sennheiser noise reduction headphone.
@@RicoResolves Will definitely check it out. Thanks man!

I'll see if I can get someone to help you with this :)!
Super video
Dankjewel Amy, leuk je weer eens te zien hier!
