  • In which I review the ZachteMan, a tiny monophonic tape loop player by Gijs Gieskes (probably butchered your name my friend). When I saw this monophonic walkman Mellotron on his instagram I had to buy it, as I love his instruments. Sadly, only 20 of this machine were made, but I mention an alternative at the end (suspense!). Here are some links:

    Thanks for showing us this ZachteMan device. My hope is that this will inspire a new generation of tape-based Mellotron-like instruments built in small commercial shops and as at-home DIY projects. This video proves conclusively that they don't need to be as big and clunky as those formidable beasts that Mellotron was building back in the 1960s in order to be useful tools for making interesting music. Wonderful video!

    Assuming the walkman is stereo, that means you should be able to have two different sounds on one tape, one per channel. Maybe you could combine and mix them similar to the upper/lower sections of an organ. Very cool way to hack a walkman.

    It's really cool using hardware for this kind of effect. For those working in the box or not wanting to tinker or wait for others to make more of these, one can make similar effects using sample software (I use Iris 2). What you need is a sample that functions as the tape. I would suggest recording a waveform and add some kind of tape noise, hum and warble effect to it. Add a bit of glide, switch off retriggering, and that works fine. It doesn't sound as cool, it certainly doesn't look as cool, but it can get pretty close with minor effort.
    That said, I might still get an Onde Magnétique some day. It's just not within my budget at the moment.

    I saw a video of a demonstration with a tape player sort of the same size but probably older and more like a desktop model. Showed CV controlling the pitch by raising / lowering the speed. So if the motor speed can be doubled, it should be in good tune for 1volt/Octave scaling. Now, I want to modify my Panasonic RR-830 dictation cassette recorder or, dictaphone. It has a pedal control to start and stop and a reverse. The tape player seems very fully featured, with pitch / speed control. It’s for a secretary to type letters that were dictated to the cassette recorder, without having to remove your eyes from the typed work. THANKS for sharing. It’s got me inspired! I’ve been admiring Gieskes’ great ideas and inventions for a few years, very innovative and creative gadgets.

    Thank you for another wonderful presentation, I love your seemingly endless examples of “non typical” machines for music. Many years ago, I was watching something on my VCR and the machine was dying
    So the speed was warbling and it created the most amazing mellotron type sounds. I wished I could have turned that into a VCR tone machine. There are many old VCR’s out there, it could make for a wonderful instrument....

    Peter Christopherson aka Sleazy from Throbbing Gristle built a machine comprising of three Sony Walkmans where the tape heads were hotwired to a one octave keyboard. This allowed him to play 4 tracks of audio from the cassettes ( 2 stereo tracks per side) triggered by the keyboard. He also had flywheels to control the speed/pitch of the tapes, they were also CV and gated to a Roland 104 sequencer so he could sequence them if he desired. All of this went through their custom made Gristleizer effects unit.

    • @ConwayBob
      @ConwayBob 5 років тому

      Hm. A motor used as something akin to a VCO. Reminds me a little bit of the Gamechanger Audio Motor Synth, only in this case a single motor drives the tape machine's transport system instead of turning tone wheels or whatever. That quirky little effect you get at each transition from one note to another is part of this device's charm.

      I love CoolEdit96, was my first ans still feel the best wave editor. Go ahead and remake a video of mine, destruction loops would be a perfect one to try and recreate in that program.
