That is awesome~~~ I am a beginner at 65, for abstract art and I love how it makes my soul feel happy. I did decide to trim my paintings with black, but was not sure, but now I am. I used to do landscape in oils years ago, but have not picked up brush since then. Then I discovered acrylics, and I learned as much as I can from you!! At my age, you lose loved ones and abstract art is keeping me together and whole again. I love your work, it's so relaxing and not many rules. Bless your heart for sharing!!!
Diane Hansma, thank you for being the bright spot in my otherwise dismal day! Making art makes you happy and joyful and that’s the reason I paint. I’m happy that what I put out into the world is helpful for others - that’s why I do it. Thanks for being my angel today, I needed it!
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 you are my angel too and I feel more alive watching you. Keep up the great work for inspiring the World, we need more people like you to make the World so much brighter!! Warm greetings from Canada.
thank you David for this tutorial on painting edges. as always your instructions are always helpful and appreciate that you share all your knowledge. Rita
you always come up with a timely video that answers my questions! i know i can pull up your channel and find the info i need! thanks bunches for the time you spend doing these videos
A good tip for people who like super crisp edges but are bad at painting straight lines like myself is to use some tape. Masking or painter's tape work well to give clean edges just make sure if you are using fluid paint seal the tape edge first with gel/medium/varnish or it might seep through.
great! i use a 2'' fitch or oval cutter brush to cut in my edges....and i use the tip of the bristles parallel to the edge, (not the side of the brush). as you say, each to his own, but its much quicker and easier for me this way (but ive been signwriting for 30 years so im very used to cutting in edges and straight lines). ;-)
Every time I watch one of your videos, I get so excited to get out to my studio and paint! A question: do you seal your paintings? Like with polyurethane or something else? I’m not sure what to use and it seems like so many say that needs to be done. Thank you!
The only time you'd need to seal is if you are using something other than acrylic paint. My work is mixed media and includes marks made with water soluble pencils and oil pastels. These will smear if not sealed. But acrylic paint is literally hard plastic when it dries, so it doesn't need sealant.
Ben Papale, I only use a brush and never a roller - personal preference. Canvas edges can vary a bit with the manufacturer. Some are slightly rolled and a roller would not be able to properly cover the edge as it meets the painting surface. Rollers also tend to leave a fairly rough surface as opposed to the smoothness of a brushed surface. I can also wash out a brush - not so with a roller - you have to throw them away and replace them.
Awesome, great advice, great reasoning. Not being able to re-use a roller is enough on its own to make me use a brush. Hard to believe how expensive it is to paint!
Hi Thank you for giving tips for stretched canvas. But can suggest what to do for backside of canvas panel? Because I mostly use canvas panel compared to stretched canvas.
I’m not sure why you would o anything to the back of a canvas panel. I don’t ever use panels. Maybe you should find someone who does to get the answers you need.
Hello, What if a painting is done on unstretched canvas and will be rolled up and shipped? How would you treat the edges then? The painting won't be stretched until the collector takes it to a framing shop. Thank you.
That’s one of the issues when you only provide part of a painting to a client - then they have to get it stretched, and they have to get the edges painted or somehow treated, when it’s really your job to give them a complete painting. I never ship rolled canvas because I provide the entire piece for my clients totally complete. In this case the client is responsible, so you will not paint the edges at all
Where are you in NC? I’m in Asheville. Just discovered your videos and am in love! Thank you so much for the instructive videos and beautiful paintings.
I have now over dosed this afternoon on your videos. Thanks for all the helpful information. This is a new endeavor for me, and I am grateful for the expertise shared.
Black gesso doesn’t have a nice finish like black paint, nor is it meant to be a finish coating - it’s designed as an undercoating. Sponge brushes aren’t my thing, but whatever works for you.
I, on the other hand, appreciate the length of the video. As someone who only started painting about a year ago, I love videos like this with quality painting tips.

I use a little 3 inch paint roller and put the paint on just in the middle of it. It works great!
Rosemary Clark thanks for the comment.
you are a genius
I had the same point to discover, however; watching this video helped me confirm my approach! Thank you David! 🙂

Susan Knowlton, thank you! Good to hear from you.
Great tip for the soft body paint and soft brush..now I can win the battle 😉
Absolutely!
kitchen sponge is the best I have found. It works wonderfully. I also keep it near me to wipe the edges easily if it drips.
Very helpful! Thank you!

Better to learn to paint without having to use tape.
Thanks Man. Great video.
Kelsey, you’re welcome - thanks for watching!
Great info! Answered my question!
Great
I need to install wood and screws on my wall just like that! What a great idea
You should do it, you’ll love it.
Great advice, thank you - I might add, some folk turn the canvas around and paint the edges from behind -
I do my edges exactly the same brush and technique but I actually often use black tattoo "ink". It works great.
Troy Stephens thanks for sharing.
What’s different about tattoo ink?
Going thru your videos David.... enjoying them and learning something along the way... :) Hugs! deb

Thanks for the video. It was super helpful. I worry about that bumps on the outside but now I won't. Do you mind telling what type of canvas you use?
Roxy Johnson, I use different brands, nothing specific. Lots of times I'll buy The Edge canvases from Jerry's Artarama.
Roxy Johnson glad it was helpful for you!

what about the back part of your canvas edge, where it was staples, do you paint it black all the there too?
I do not.

I don’t put any varnish on my paintings and there is no reason to do it. It’s a waste of time and money

I do the same thing but I paint the edges first then when I’m painting, it is over the edge. Then I go back and touch up the edges

@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Ok thanks
I have used canvas panels many times. You treat them the same as the backside of any substrate--do nothing.

can i use gouache to do the edges?
Why not?
