Boswell refers to James Boswell the 18th century biographer of Dr. Samuel Johnson. His bio of Dr. Johnson is one of the great works of English literature. In Holmes remark "I am lost without my Boswell" not only is he paying homage to Boswell, but also to his own biographer Dr. Watson.
How many people can say that they are "lost without their Boswell" these days? When it seems you can't trust anyone anymore? Not very many, I assure you. But there are a few faithful "Watsons" and "Boswells" still left in the world today. I can definitely say that of my best friend Andrew. I am lost without MY Boswell. =)

Oh thank goodness, I had no idea who Holmes was referencing!
@@deborahingle2301I also was wondering, so I looked it up.
@@deborahingle2301 right! I wondered too! Grateful for this explanation.
Aaaaah, I had totally forgotten that moment. Now I get the "I am lost without my blogger" from new BBC's Sherlock ...
The BBC Sherlock always does that
Like ‘this is a three patch problem’
I love it
I still adore Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock.

One of the most clever reference ever made in a movie. Very few will truly get it...
