    Pro Tip: The easiest way to wrap your head around a weird time signature like 11/8 is to break it down into smaller units. The song in the video is a 3-2 feel: three counts of three and one count of two (1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2). 11/8 can also be broken down into two counts of 4 and a count of 3 (1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3) or other variations depending on the composition and what you want to accomplish rhythmically. But it's generally helpful to break it down into smaller chunks.

      Mike B Fly 7/8 isn’t really that hard
      A visual representation with the Morse Code characters shows the simplest beat of it better that I can without it so here - - - .- - - .- - - .- - - . it’s basically 4/4 but with the final beat cut in half, or the half way point between 4/4 and 5/4

      Actually 11/8 grooves pretty hard if you use only one "3". You can put the 3 in one of five positions, two of which are often used in Balkan music: 4+3+4 and 3+4+4.

      ​@@coolj23097 Off the top of my head, I can think of Frank Zappa, Don Ellis, Dave Brubeck ("Time Out" and "Time Further Out" are classics), King Crimson, Genesis ("Turn It On Again" has some really complex rhythmic twists for a radio-friendly pop song), Mike Oldfield, Stereolab, Venetian Snares, The Mars Volta... Yeah, I think that's a good panorama. Of course, it doesn't mean *everything* those guys have done is in irregular time--except for Venetian Snares, I guess.

      I am a huge Tool fan and they have given me so much inspiration musically. But I have heard other bands that have used unusual time signatures (like Led Zeppelin, Dream Theater, Karnivool etc.) but Tool has always been the first band that comes to mind when someone mentions odd time signatures. I can understand why people don’t like them, but that doesn’t stop me from being a really big fan.

    I still don't fully understand the use of the launchpad. How do you know where all of the notes/samples are on the pad? And can't you just use a MIDI controller?

      2 rows contain 1 octave (first row white keys and second black keys, they're also located relative to one another like a piano) and then you just go up in octaves as you move up on the pad.

    Awesome track! But be warned, once you start using odd time signatures, you don't stop, haha. I intended for just one track on my EP to be in an odd time signature, and ended up using 10/4, 5/4, 7/4, 6/4, 13/8, 15/8, and some other ones I don't remember. It's just too much fun to work with!

      +MusicIsMy Oxygen I've done some 15/8 stuff and it's not *that* weird. I mean, it depends on how weird you want to make it. If you do, for example, an underlying 7/8 + 8/8 rhythm, it sounds pretty natural.
      I also experimented with 15/16 and had a ton of fun. It's like a 7/8 but you have a bit more space to relax between measures!

      @@brothaNblue Adam Neely disagrees. Watch his video on Irrational Time Signatures.
      Basically, just as 3/4 is dividing a whole note into 4 pieces and using 3 of them, 6/9 would be dividing a whole note into 9 pieces(you could see it as a nine tuplet) and using 6 of them.
      Although 6/9 wouldn't make sense without context, you can definitely do it, at least if you recognize this way of interpreting it.

      @@gamerkaue88 First 3/4 does not mean a whole note is divided into 3 parts. It means 1 measure is equal to the length of 3 quarter notes. I can kind of see what you're saying about using 9's. But when you apply them to the length of the measure, you've basically turned them into eighth notes rendering them pointless. I'd like to see a written example of this you can provide one.

      It's not dividing in 3, but in 4(aka quarter notes) and using 3 of them in a measure. When you divide in numbers that aren't powers of 2 it's called tuples. Divided by 3, triplets, 5, quintuplets, 7, septuplets, etc... A 9tuplet is a bit faster than 8th notes, so there's a difference.
      Irrational Time Signatures are really just a short hand for a metric modulation(changing the tempo to match a tuplet basically), as it's explained in the Adam Neely video. There the guy he is interviewing uses multiple x/12 time signatures throughout his song instead of multiple metric modulations.

    Time sigs are fun to mess with! It creates a new way of thinking through a melody line or rhythm.
    11 is one of my favourites, especially when in the 3+3+3+2 that you used.
    For me, 7 is a really easy one to come up with ideas in, and I like using a crotchet beat in a 7/8 to get that offbeat in each second bar.

    I tried tapping out some drum set rhythms over this and it's way easier than I expected. It's a surprisingly intuitive time signature: it's basically 9/8+2/8, and 9/8 is pretty easy (compound version of 3/4). At least at this tempo (guessing somewhere around dotted quarter = 60), I found it pretty easy and fun to improvise a kind of blues-ish feel with it, like if Meshuggah played blues or something.

    Your ability to pick a sound that fast and just go with it is liberating to see. I mostly don't get songs even started because of indecisive behaviours and tweaking for hours and hours. Drums are the worst for it.

    THIS IS SO FREAKING COOL. Next time I think it would be cool if you tried 5/4 or 9/8 time, or even 7/4! These time signatures are used in jazz a lot and I'd love to see what you do with them!

      @@CreatureQuakeRedo 7/4 has 7 quarter notes in a measure (so it has a quarter pulse, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7), and 7/8 has 7 8th notes in a measure. Since 8th notes and quarter notes have different lengths musically, 7/4 and 7/8 have a different amount of possible beats per measure. 7/4 has 7 quarter notes, 14 8th notes, 28 16th notes etc. and 7/8 has 7 8th notes and so on). The main telling difference is how they feel to us though, 7/4 has an underlying quarter pulse, and 7/8 has an underlying 8th note pulse (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and *with 4/4*)

      every 2 rows are an octave, the first one being the white keys and the second one being the black keys which are positioned relative to the white keys
      then, this repeats 3 times or so
