The sandbags were relatively successful...there were plenty of pumps going on top of the bags to remove the inevitable seepage.There was a town effort filling sandbags etc when the river was rising....I was nine at the time..Some of the best days of our lives!
Mum always explain me about great flood at Mannum in 1956 she saw them all and after few weeks later mum fishing caught 118 Callop in few hours. 118 fish mostly gave families and friends...
This is bad for the town but a great thing for the river. Build a town right next to the river on a floodplain and what do you expect. I would have loved to visit the Coorong and the mouth in the following year. Its so sad that the river has been destroyed and turned into a stagnant swamp.

I gave a house at mannum... Come to think of it I wish I was there at the time when that happend!!! It would gave been a bit annoying so.... many Not
