  • Just outside the historic downtown area of St. Augustine north of Uptown San Marco is one of the most inspiring destinations in Florida. Fort Mose was the first legally-sanctioned free African settlement in America. Often referred to as the Original Underground Railroad, this place was a refuge for enslaved Africans who escaped from British plantations in the Carolinas and Georgia. The Spanish offered them freedom and land in exchange for their allegiance and conversion to Catholicism. On this episode, I take you to Fort Mose Historic State Park where we together will experience the Flight to Freedom event, a living history showcase that recreates the journey of the freedom seekers. I’ll also tell you about an exciting new project to construct a replica of the 18th century fort. Come along to discover the true meaning of freedom at Fort Mose, a symbol of courage and resilience.

Unfortunately he crossed the line when he said that he was not a reenactor, but a chief of a tribe that is not recognized. A search of news articles shows this self-proclaimed Yamasee tribe to have frequent brushes with the law and cult-like behavior.

The family reported by the provost Marshall to have emerged from the swamp with carbines, was my great great grandfather , and his family 26:16 , my ancestors “
The first mention of escaped slaves in Spanish records was in 1687 when eight slaves, including a nursing baby, showed up in St. Augustine.”
Interestingly info read the document as they surrendered to th Marshall they surrendered several carbines , which are distinctly different. Weapons ,, military issued with rifles barrels … they crossed over into no Florida territory later went back to NC and established St Augustine’s college
The Bishop Delany….. it important to know that African peoples been fighting since day 1 ….

a very small piece of Florida history, if any. the history of florida goes back far beyond this. people stop history wherever it seems to fit their story.
