  • This is my 1938 Slingerland Gene Krupa Radio King snare drum that I fully restored using new old stock parts. The only size snare drum Slingerland made in 1938 was a 6.5 x 14 inch model. Of course Slingerland was famous for their solid maple shell with the solid maple re-enforcing rings which this Radio King snare drum has. Amazing sound out of this Gene Krupa Radio King snare. These Radio King drums were made in the old Slingerland Chicago factory. I got to meet Gene Krupa way back in 1971 and I`m so glad I had my little film camera with me. He was so nice to me and he even gave me his brushes which I played in this video. Of course one of Gene`s best friend was Buddy Rich, who I also got to know from seeing him so many times. Slingerland, Gene Krupa, and of course Buddy Rich are a big part of drum history. Never knew way back then that one day I would have my own Ken Loomer Big Band like what Gene and Buddy had. I`m sure glad I took the time to restore one of the most famous snare drums in history.

This is the Gene Krupa Slingerland Radio King snare drum model he used when playing with Benny Goodman. Also with his new Gene Krupa Big Band he started back in 1938. Dose your Krupa sticks have the same tip as on my Slingerland Gene Krupa model. What markings is on the stick? Mine has Slingerland GK Gene Krupa Made In The USA as you can see in the 12:24 mark. Thanks Albert for your comment.

I`m sure glad I found all the parts to restore this 1938 Gene Krupa Slingerland Radio King snare drum. Buddy Rich was always so kind to me. As you can see at the 14:57 mark I`m playing on Buddy`s Slingerland drum set. Buddy was doing a concert at Seaworld in Orlando, Florida. He did two shows, one at 2pm and the 2nd at 7pm. After the first concert I went and saw Buddy back stage. I had some drum sticks with me and asked Buddy, now that you have some time off, how about a drum lesson. I got to know Buddy a little bit, and he smiled and said "To the drums". I asked Buddy if he could help me with my left hand since it was weak and I couldn`t get any speed from it. He told me to just play some singles. I played the traditional grip and did a single stoke roll. Right away Buddy stopped me and said your holding the left hand all wrong. I was holding my left hand with the stick near the back end of the stick. Buddy took the stick and told me I should hold it near the middle of the stick to get better balance. That way you get a better bounce off the head and your speed will be much better. Then Buddy played just his left hand and showed me how this works. Well of course he was right. You watch any video of Buddy and that left hand is near the middle of the stick. I do the same of holding my left stick near the middle after that great lesson from the master. I play faster and of course more in control of my left hand with that technique Buddy told me. That was my lesson I will never forget from Buddy.

I used new old stock Slingerland parts that were made when Slingerland was owned by Gibson in the early 2000`s. This one guy bought out all the parts and even had some Marine Pearl Slingerland wrap which I used to restore this 1938 Slingerland GK Radio King snare drum. Thanks for your comment.

A lot of drum history in that 1938 Gene Krupa Radio King snare drum. Plus I got to meet Gene Krupa and watch him play with his great quartet. He started it all with his drumming for sure. Thanks Andy for your comment.
