This install was a little more tricky than the other installs I have done to date, and was more of a test really than anything to find out if using a floor opening for air intake and a side opening for exhaust would work well. In the end and after use, it works perfectly!

Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

To keep your sealant lines neat, I put a piece of painter's tape above and below where you're caulking. When you peel off the tape, you have a nice, straight line of caulk.

Your air intake needs to be larger, the intake can come from cool air from inside the room, it will work much less. You need a drain hole in the bottom with a PEX tube hanging below the floor. Water will not be bowing out the exhaust.

    • @mikemotorbike4283

It will create a vacuum in the vehicle and struggle against it. it will exhaust the expensively cooled limited inside air and replace it quickly at the rate of the fan with hot outside air coming in through air cracks in the vehicle to replace the exhausted air. Cars are pretty airtight. That's why they float. This is why better portablehouse units use two hoses for efficiency. Otherwise using the room air is the same as putting a fan in the window.

The problem I found with no drip ACs is they never burn off all the water and that makes them get mold and smell.

Just a thought, what about a UPS or battery backup for a computer? I used one on an old DLP TV because if the power flickered during a storm the TV would start to shutdown, fan only for 2-3 min before it could be turned back on. The UPS kept the power output consistent.

Does anyone know of an AC unit for sale in 2020 that has no-drip??

I am converting a diesel short bus myself and been struggling with the different options of air conditioners. I have a large portable but it’s so bulky it takes up massive space. I temporarily have an AC sticking out the window which I hate the way that looks LOL. So it’s good to know that a boxing option seems to be working and that is something I can consider.

The digital controls is what is messing you up. Go with basic 2 knobs and it’ll fire off in eco mode no problem. Hobotech proves this on his channel. He ran the same Frigidaire brand with 2 knobs on ecomode with a 800/1000 sportsman inverter/generator. Just sayin. Screw the digital read out. YOU’RE CAMPING!

    • @Campgeeks
      @Campgeeks  4 роки тому +1

Yeah, I figured that the first time it did it. Since it is in place for now, I will keep it, but may swap it out eventually. With that said, I don't plan on using it often anyway, just when we are traveling and pop into a rest area or something and need to cool down to sleep. We typically boon dock when we camp, so no power and no generator at night.

  • @frankc6430
    @frankc6430 4 роки тому +1

so maybe a mechanical control unit might work better than the digital control, for that surge problem? even thou they all surge to cool.

  • @mikemotorbike4283
    @mikemotorbike4283 5 місяців тому +1

Remember the air behind a wheel does strange things when travelling. It swirls around, you can see the mess on the paint behind a wheel. That's why we use tire flaps. May need a slider in addition to the screen to keep water from potentially being forced in under highway pressure while you're travelling through rain, puddles etc. Also, don't park nose down; the condensate will flow out the front into the interior. Best to affix a hose if tray provides a drip hole to do so. I'd be concerned some water would splash out of the unit into your van.
Keep in mind the tray is designed to hold water which the fan literally flings onto the fins for an additional cooling effect. Air cons may provide hole for a tube. It may be up half an inch or so in order to to both hold water for the cooling splashing effect, but also to drain the tray if it gets too high. It may be worth perpetually draining this water and losing the slight efficiency gain. Or fitting in a drain cock on the lowest part of the tray, and operated manually when you are ready to move. Becausewhen you move, if there is still water in the tray, it will slosh around and maybe into the compartment. Perhaps you could waterproof the lower part of the enclosure, and fit a permanent drain hole, or just let it drain out the lower air vent.
Also, maybe a larger more expensive capacitor? That one looks suspiciously affordable, kudos thrifty shopper! But I've noticed RV capacitor/soft-start devices can cost up to $800, so maybe here you get whatchu pay for.
Otherwise a workaround would be to manually turn on a high amp load for 5 seconds to trigger the generator into ramping up to full output. A small 500w heater, hairdryer, hotplate. If it allows the aircon's 50w fan to run for two minutes, then maybe it will stay ramped up for when the 450w compressor kicks in in two minutes. 450w +/- compressor when running, with amp starting spike. This is when the capacitor really does its work.
I guess the aircon does a test when it starts up to see if there are enough amps for when the compressor will start in two minutes. The fan by itself should otherwise be ramping up the the gen. The only other way I can see is to mess with the circuitry. Or try a more expensive capacitor system. Who knows, there may be one which already addresses your eco mode issue. It's possible he could start the aircon in fan mode, which may not test for high amps, but will still trigger the eco into full mode. Then he could change setting from fan to cool.

Time to stick a solar panel on the roof, build and install a DIY Lithium RV battery, and run the Honda Generator to "charge" the battery when the AC is running, and power the AC from a 1500 watt inverter. That way you have a battery behind the inverter supporting the startup load, not just the capacitor. There used to be a company that marketed a "solar window air conditioner" and all it had was a battery wired up inside the air conditioner, so you could hook up a few solar panels to power it, and the battery would handle the startup load.
And, of course then you'll have power for lights and fans and a 12v fridge from just the solar panel and battery. I have 170 watts of solar on my current van and can run my small 12v fridge along with lights at night and an hour or so of roof vent to cool the inside down and still have enough left over to charge my phone overnight on USB with just a 75ah lead acid battery for it.
But I'm building out a new van, and this time it only makes sense to go DIY Lithium. I'll have 585 watts of solar (3 x 195) on the roof, and a 200ah Lithium 12v DIY battery... plenty of juice for everything I could want, which includes a small air fryer and small microwave!
Study up how to build a Lithium battery from 4 Lifepo4 individual cells (3.2v) via videos all over UA-cam with cells that you buy off Aliexpress at whatever AH you want or can afford. All you need to go with them is a "BMS" or battery management system (search "DALY BMS"), which balance charges the cells for you to keep them from drifting, and protects from over and undercharge, along with a temp probe to keep you from charging the battery if its too cold, as Lithium doesn't like charging at near freezing temps. If you can install that capacitor you can build a Lithium 12v battery from cells and a BMS. Today it just makes WAY more sense to go lithium when you can DIY it for not much more than lead acid, and the difference is lead acid only gives you 50% of the battery's rated AH in usable amps before you start damaging it, but Lithium gives you 90% of rated amps...
Also, turn that bed into one of the van conversion DIY "slide out" ones where every other support slat slides out, others stay fixed. Let's you have twice the room with seating during the day, and convert in seconds to sleep on at night.

One of the goals is to separate the air flows but also a side advantage is to separate the noise of the compressor and associated fan. Everything has given and takes. You did well to meet your design goals. I wonder if a slider and a door which allowed the aft end of the unit to extend outside while in use and retracted to store when in transit.

Something I learned recently is that capacitors in parallel have less capacitance, not more. Example, if you have 2 caps, 1F each in series, you get 0.5F, not 2F. It's like adding resistors in parallel. This is totally counterintuitive for me, but it may explain why the extra capacitor didn't work.

In 2019 the first item I installed was my 5k btu AC. I live in my camper permanently and move around following the weather. I am back for a couple of months in dry dock to improve my solar and the AC. LOVED the info on the soft start cap. I was wondering if that was possible. I also have eco mode on the AC and it worls great. I use a Champion 2000w generator and that also works fine on eco. I have a TCL unit from Walmart. My only criticism is mounting the unit on the floor. That is generally a bad idea for a couple of reasons.

Great setup - love the steath of it. In my micro camper van the living/sleeping space is only 7x4x4. I installed a Chinese 24v 1800 BTU AC in the garage portion. I vent the evaporator into a shared garage space that vents up out the roof of my van with a fan. It works great and only consumes 170 Watts! Given my 460AH house battery recharged by both 320w of solar and 50a dc-dc alternator power is a non-issue for me. The setup works great in the shade, rain and dark (when I need t most TBH) making the space comfortable in Florida summer. Video on my channel.
Idea, given you are building an enclosure, why not just dump the OEM metal enclosure and make your enclosure larger so it benefits from custom ventilation?
One other idea I've had for some time is having one of these 5000btu ACs in the garage space of larger van without any enclosure. Just a shared shared ventilation on both sides and letting hot air from it and other appliance like a fridge, TV, inverter, chargers, etc, find it's way out. I only wonder about humidity and rust in a shared garage, but no matter what it always seems very hot and humid back there with or without an AC.. if anything an AC will force air to move.

I love these kind of clueless videos. Regarding air-conditioners with compressors and, less than ideal power mains.
Yup. That's called a low-voltage start capacitor. I got a wall mount Bard for my truck. 30 years ago. But I never needed to install that low-voltage start capacitor.
In a van. I wouldn't worry about trying to suck in outside air from outside the van. Certainly not coming up through the floor. Where odors have a tendency to emanate from. And you don't need that. Because on a van. You have these things called, Windows or, exhaust vents. Which are essentially bidirectional.
And so with only the air intakes on the window air conditioner not sucking in the hot fresh air from outside. That hot sticky humid stinky air, from outside. Instead. It's just sucking in the air from inside the van. And circulating that. Adding to the air-conditioning's power.
And like any new baby. You need to put it into a nice flat sheet metal flat sheet cooking pan. Drill a hole. And glue in a little drainage hose tube. And make certain. When you build your air conditioning unit inside your van. You make certain the front is slightly elevated to its rear. And perhaps even slightly askew the pan. So as to ensure proper drainage. At no matter what angle you might be parked at. Within reason.
I know that's an awful lot more to think about. But that's why God created atheists. It certainly looks like an excellent first attempt. The venting louver is super rad.
But in the end. It is in my own personal engineering estimation. That within my van. I would have mounted that within the rear corner at the ceiling. Into an overhead corner mounted over bridge of additional, readily available convenient storage. For daily needs purposes. And because heat rises and cold falls. It will suck in all that heat near the ceiling inside the van. And cool you off better when that cool breeze just falls down and sinks upon your person in bed. On the couch. Sitting at your desk punching out your videos. And it's not as hot in your upper interior elevations within your van. Since it takes a little distance for that cool breeze to fall toward the floor. After it's ejected from the fan. And I think mounting it near the floor wastes more energy and does a less efficient job of cooling. That small area within your van.
In other words. Like it was sticking out the back window. But without sticking it out the back window. Building within that area. Venting it out the rear window. Boxing in the rear window. So you can still open up the door. You'll just have a foam surround. Where the window is and the rear louver will replace the window. And so virtually flush mounted but slightly offset. Taking it less room on the floor. Sticking it in an upper rear corner. Come on dude. You couldn't see that right there in front of your face awaiting you? My God man! Don't look down. Look up. Looking up get you better parking spaces. I know this for a fact. As I found the ultimate parking space and campsite for 8 solid months running. And the only person in the world. To have discovered this campsite.
Now you might ask where this campsite was. It does not exist any longer. It was closed forever. Back in the mid-1990s. After I discovered it. Yes. I am the sole person of the world. When I discovered this, time constrained/time-limited, campsite. Not allowed between 10 AM and 6 PM. Eastern Time.
Amenities were abundant. And within mere feet. As in, a couple of lengths of my own 2 feet. Within 15 feet. Of everything and anything I could possibly want. Available 24 hours a day. While watching television on a big screen the whole time for free! And enjoying a beer or whatever. Which was available outside my window of my vehicle. If I wanted to get out and move 15 feet into the liquor store. Mark 15 feet into the drugstore. Or 15 feet to the pizza place. As I found this great campsite at, Times Square, 7th Avenue South, New York City between 42nd and 43rd St. Right there at the corner of the triangular headlines streaming and gigantic Coca-Cola sign with the first lightbulb big screen TV display. Which was 20 feet to my right. And there he was! The New York City, Naked Cowboy Singer, with his guitar cowboy hat and boots. Walking around in his jockey shorts only. On was a lot of fun to talk to. He was one of those Times Square staples back in the 1990s. Not sure what has become of him today? No naked cowboy is allowed during Covid? I don't know? I haven't gone to New York City to try and obtain my own copy of, Covid-19. Hey 19! Walter Becker is dead from Covid! God dammit FUCK shit! I mean Donald Fagan is cool and all that but. What's sign in without Garfunkel? What's Bob without Denver? David Zimmerman that's who. And Tony Curtis as Bernie Schwartz. And the Ramon's were Jewish. And trying to act like mafioso. Because they looked like it also. You can't tell them apart. I didn't know he was Jewish until he was dead. A fake Italian. Go figure? At least Bugsy Siegel was Bugsy Siegel. And we knew he wasn't Italian.
I'll not 9 month. I found they had finally changed the sign. To what it was supposed to have been originally. And I'm the only person in the world. Whoever camped out. Legally. Right there on 7th Ave. S. in Times Square, New York City. Far 8 months running. As I would go up there once a month to do 4 TV shows. I was only hired as audio engineer but became coproducer of. And really upped the production quality and added additional cameras. To make for a real New York TV produced, local entertainment news, interviews, performances and comedy, variety show. I came up from Washington DC. Where I had been working for the other, NBC-TV-News Hub, Washington DC. But went up to New York City to do music entertainment variety shows. Once a month. For about a year and 1/2.
And oh what fun that was. The dumbfounded looks on the cops faces. Telling me to move. I asked them why? They said read the sign. I said I did that's why I parked here. Then, they would look and read this one particular sign, themselves. I wish I had pictures of the expressions on their faces. As it was the wrong sign. Installed into the concrete. Nobody bothered to ever read it closely. All 10 million of them plus. All of the tourists coming through by the millions. Nobody bothered to read this sign in Times Square on 7th Ave., South, carefully. It's very funny. It's extremely funny. It's real New York City funny. And it's only because I look up and read signs. I read them very carefully. It said no parking any time. Just like all of the other ones on 7th Avenue except this one in Times Square said no parking any time 10 AM-6 PM. DUH. Nobody bothered to read it closely. It sat there for years that way. This one cop told me he had been walking that beat for 3 years. He never noticed that. Nobody ever parked there before. He said you're right. I won't be bothering you again. And I will inform the others also not to. But that didn't keep Cassian coming up behind me and honking even though my lights were off the engine was off. And I was trying to get some sleep in the back of my van. A 24 hour bathroom or two or three. Were just feet away. So was any kind of food you wanted more beverage you wanted. Even a grocery store up near the corner at 43rd St. Which was at least 50 feet away. Wow which was quite the, haul. If you wanted that super size bag of potato chips but why? When you had fresh pizza even closer. Pop, beer, booze just as close.
As so if you're used to being in New York City. You are also used to sleeping with, lots of traffic noise, horns honking, sirens, construction, buildings falling down. You learn to sleep through it. Because you get to live in New York City anytime you want to. Except during a pandemic. When everyone left for Miami. As they had that infectious sense of fun about them. So did the governor. Donnie's little brother, Ronnie D. Sand tits. Now they are both having fun in the Florida sand, pits. I have the next hurricane drowns them all. Wouldn't that be cool!
Donnie found dead at the bottom of his pool. Having tried to avoid the dirty water influx from the ocean. Because his pool water was clean and clear. But was found beneath a fishing boat. In his swimming pool. At Mara Lago Lego. Now with their own KFC! And their own McDonald's! Where the encampment is now self-contained. And he's got enough lawyers to keep the water off his property. As he purchased a Styrofoam company and plans to float a few dollars.
The next great Arc to be built to save the planet. Needs to be made from Styrofoam. It won't sink. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. And it will take hundreds if not thousands of years to deteriorate. So if you're going to be sitting in a boat for any length of time. It would be great if the whole thing was made from Styrofoam!
I can see it now. Billions of people bobbing around in Styrofoam cups on the face of the planet now covered in water. And all of the weeks that will be caused by people getting it on in their Styrofoam arcs. Causing lots of waves. To disrupt the entire community. Even throwing people right off of their Styrofoam thrones. With the holes cut out in the bottom. And that just wouldn't be right.
So that only special areas will be allowed to have high wakes. A ferry service will be provided to that area. Or straight people. Will also be available, still, we think. If they have not changed genders. And I would personally know about that.
I'm glad we straighten this confusing situation out

Why do so many of you not understand how a fricken window ac unit works? You do not cool the condenser with air from the room you are trying to cool. There is this thing called infiltration. If you create a vacuum in the space you are trying to cool, warm outside air WILL seep into the room. Room air goes through the front of the ac, hits the evaporator and comes out the top front back into the room. You are recycling the inside air. Outside air is used to cool the condenser and blows the heated outside air out the back. The two air flows are to be sealed from each other like the maker of this video has done. So all of you dopes who keep saying to use cabin air to cool the back end of the ac might as well go get a single hose portable ac that works for shit cuz that is what you are telling this guy to do.

Ok. I am doing a Sprinter. My “plan’
    Rear van built wall
A/c in that wall on slider
When rear doOrs open a/c slides out
I am using Frigidaire 5000 manual which has ‘soft start”
Using propane gen 700 sometimes works
I might use it powered off battery bank

I am wondering, if you could mount the window unit on the roof.... Make a box for the front and run the cold air through the roof Maybe use a fan for more flow... Has anyone ever thought about it???

going this far, you are just better off finding the lowest BTU camper unit and simply installing the kit on the roof of your own trailer. Because fabin it all would end up costing same as a cooler unit kit. Down fall, your stuck needing Watts again, those window units can take 1/4th the watts to run compared to a roof unit.

That is just the reason why I want to change. The roof ac works just fine, but while boondocking there is no way to get enough power. And I don't want to log around a monster generator...
So it is not a money issue but a power issue.
So what is your take on this? Ever heard of putting a window unit on the roof?

@@danzante321 Wont work unless you fab up alot. Window units have to sit level. But I have been looking into this all more, tons of people love installing a Hard Start cap. Each brand seems to have their own, either way its less then $50 and they all seem easy to install. Everyone I have seen to it right and whatnot, they are getting away with 2-2500 watt gens running their 13.5BTU roof AC!!!! That is impressive as most require 3500 running and then over time derate and degrade so much they wont even run the Roof AC much anymore. Those darn Compressors get old also in your roof AC, taking more energy to roll the compressor at startup. I strongly suggest installing a CAP for your brand you have on your camper. Quick and easy and solve problems.
