Got to try to Marquise today at the luthier shop. It was like playing butter, just so easy to play with a perfect weight for me. Bright sound but way cleaner than Escent or Diamond (no hissing/tinniness)
I'm an intermediate adult learner and I upgraded my bow. I tested the CodaBow Diamond GX, the Joule and the Marquis. The Joule was too sluggish and tip heavy for my tastes. The Marquis...I wanted to like it, but even though it was roughly the same weight as the Diamond GX (62.14g vs 62.4), while very maneuverable and agile, it didn't have enough sound at the tip. I think if I was a better player, I could appreciate it, especially for light, delicate passages. The Diamond GX, however, felt like a perfect fit. Very balanced, just enough weight to pull a nice sound out of the violin (Mittenwald, c 1850) it seems to almost play itself. I love this bow for the six months I've had it.
Michael McWilliams great!
What a delightful spirit you show others. Prayers for you and your family.
Thank you and blessings, Erle!
It's good to know coda bow is available for decent price. I have never tried a carbon fiber. I have a permabuco wood.
Carbon offers so much new possibilities, especially Arcus really offers something new.
I've just ordered a Diamond NX bow and Pirastro Evah Pirazzi string set for my Gliga 1 violin, which for a self taught beginner could be a bit extravagant, but am extremely excited to try them, Of course now I won't be able to blame the bow or strings for my own dismal playing ! ha ha
Wonderful!
I can hear that the Marquis is far better!!
So much so, I just ordered one!!!
Thank you!
I love this wonderful review and the beautiful Dutch accent :) BRAVA! IMHO, she played best using the Coda GX.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My wife has a Coda Bow and a Pernambuco Wood Bow. She states there is a difference in sound. However, the Coda Bow is more comfortable to play. She enjoys the Coda Bow more because of the responsiveness and weight. Thank you for the presentation.
Great to read that. Which Coda does she have?
@Petr Slivinski which coda bow?
I will definitely be purchasing your course very soon. Cheers.
Yay, love to welcome you as a student, Mark!
@@violinlounge Thank you so much. I have to learn online because I'm a left-handed violin player and most teachers freak out when they see me and don't want to teach me. Even though I am a mirror image of what they are playing. Anyway, I will pay you in a few weeks. I'm so glad to have found your channel and your website.
@@rawmark you will not be the only left handed player in my program. One of my students has to play left handed because of an injury.
@@violinlounge Ahh, that's good that I won't be the only lefty. Thank you.
Zlata, Giedre, Both played exquisite and beautiful. Wish i'd play a song for you two and feel happy. Big hugs to both of you!
Hugs from Holland!
@@violinlounge Thank you, and i hope you and Giedre would like this.. ua-cam.com/video/lA2xfij48Ok/v-deo.html
Spock B wow, thank you for sharing, we can be really thankful to have internet!
@@violinlounge Indeed, and i love having friends with violin players, including my teacher in which she and i played at nursing homes.
Thanks for the reviews. I'm not sure what kind of bow I have, but I know it is a student level. Anyway, when I improve I'm glad there are some good bows in my price range. I think I need a music savings, so I can save up little by little to upgrade my equipment. Not sure if equipment is the right word to use.
bang mon yes, certainly, upgrade bit by bit as you advance
I own a GX; and the Marquise sounded just a little brighter and nicer to me.. but not enough for me to sell a GX just to upgrade; but if I was buying it all over again; then yes I would. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching, Albert, the GX is certainly a wonderful bow!
@@violinlounge would love to see a Coda vs Arcus head to head!
Albert Yang I’ve got that in the pipeline 😊
It'd be nice to hear the Coda Bow Marquise played along side the Arcus S6 you play in the other review video. To my ear the Arcus has more overtones and a bit more color compared to the Coda but I'd love to know if they were both shot on the same day with the same sound/mic settings.
You can find exactly that in my bow guide: www.violinlounge.com/bow All shot in the same day with the same settings.
I’m right now testing out GX and GS. This video only mentions the difference in sound. However, suppleness and balance point differs quite a lot in my opinion between the two. I’m an enthusiastic beginner and have just played for 7 months. I feel more comfortable with the GX. It feels more stable and tracks better, for me. I do like the sound of the GS but it takes more effort to achieve a stable tone on long slow bow strokes. I still think that the GS takes me in the direction I want. Do you think that a GS will prevent my progress or the opposite make me better due to forcing me to use better technique? I can accept that it doesn’t sound perfect all the time. With the GX I don’t need to think, just play. I don’t even need to warm up, it sounds perfect anyway. But perhaps this is contra productive because it does not force me to become better.
Well, you won't learn anything wrong from the GX and I can imagine that it matches you better at this stage of your playing. A sensible route would be to get the GX, play it for a few years and then see if you want to upgrade to GS or something else.
I wonder if it is helpfull when a student has a bow which is more difficult to manage? Apart from the price that is. Will it take less time to learn to play the violin with a better bow? Or does it give you an advantage that you have learned to handle difficult bows?
The student bow is very stable, making legato and straight bowing a bit easier, but making it harder to jump, less lively It's kind of a trade off. The performance bows make more advanced bowing techniques easier, but their response is better making them harder to handle for beginners. For each level a bow, I guess, that's something CodaBow has well thought out.
@@violinlounge Oké, that makes sense then. I was just wondering.
My bow is the original wooden one that came with my violin. Next time I am at our violin shop I am interested to find out what bows they do keep in stock, I'm hoping they have a carbon fibre bow I can try playing with. All your reviews are making me very curious!
Bows are an interesting quest and if you have the opportunity to try different ones out, that's great!
Have you heard of the Codabow Aspire? Is it discontinued? What are its characteristics?
Sorry, I don't know it.
I own a Viola Codabow Aspire. I think it is more of a student bow and has now possibly been replaced by the Prodigy bow? It does not have the light touch of the Diamond series in my experience, but does the job!
I'm roughly at Suzuki level 4-5. Unfortunately, I will not be able to try the bow as I will buy it online. There is no possibility of upgrading to GS after buying GX. In this case, which bow would you recommend me to choose?
Can we say that playing with GS is more difficult and requiring more expertise than GX?
No, it's not more difficult to play. Actually I think the Marquise is very easy to handle and accessible,. If you like the sound better, maybe on long term it's best to choose the Marquise right away.
Just bought a diamond nx cello bow :)
Congrats on your new bow!
What would be your opinion on the codabow diamond sx and the luma? I have a good ”violon d’étude” and a we dorfler bow. But I always feel like i’m struggling against my bow.... is it ok to go for a diamond gx or would a lower bow do the job....? I need a bow that gives a good sound on the G string that is weaker on my violin... thank you for you videos!
It's personal, so I would definitely try them both out before deciding. However, my personal preference goes to the Luma, as it feels light and agile and I like that.
Did I not catch the reason in your video, but why did you not include SX?
I don't remember exactly, as the recording was over two years ago, but we couldn't get our hands on it at the time, I think.
Thanks for the reviews. Have you tried the Luma? If so what’s your opinion compared to the rest? Thanks
I played it a lot when I worked in the violin shop. It has a soft sound and light handling. It's not so all round as the GS series, but it's a nice bow. When you consider it, make sure to compare it to others before buying.
@@violinlounge unfortunately I don’t have the opportunity to compare them, so it might be a mistake to buy blindly online :/
@@damianmb5 You could order three bows you're interested in and send the two you don't buy back. Even when buying online there are possibilities to try out. However, make sure you buy them somewhere they don't do difficult with returns.
😁 Now I am very curious 🧐 I have bought 1 of those 3 from you in the violin shop Zlata 😝😉
Do you recognize what we say in the video? What are your experiences?
Violin Lounge by Violinist Zlata Yes, I have the Same meaning and I love my Marquis. I notice in this test that de Marquis has The best response and the brightest sound 😉💐💝
Marleen Jamers yes, it’s beautiful! Good choice!

Great video!
What could you say about CodaBow Prodigy CB-SPA4G?

For the marquise, you don’t pronounce the ‘s’

Yes, also in Louise, Denise, etc. you don't pronounce the 's'.
Sorry, Coda Bow is not worth the price in our experience. We had a Pridefy model for almost 400€. No proper tension in the rod, flawed hair, Notverband close to the sound of a proper 300€ wood bow on an advanced violin. Extremely disappointing in our case. Made in US not always is good. Even the demonstration sounds flat with lacking brilliancy.
Sorry you had this experience. I do think what you describe with the Prodigy is not what it should be and you should get some service under warranty where you bought the Prodigy.
