The best thing to make a hammer form out of would be steel. I showed the wood form in the video to make a easy part that didn't require a lot of shrinking. for small parts hardwood will do fine for one or two parts. If you are going to make a lot of parts then best to use steel forms. I always try to use hard maple when making wooden forms. Pine will not work and will crush when you try to hammer steel over it. Maple is my favorite but any hardwood will do. Hickory is good, white oak is good but be careful of the grain orientation so it doesn't split or crack, Brian
hi. i have a 54 3b r.h. drive.just wondering about rust proofing the inside of the boxed sections after sand blasting. thanks. keep up these great vids.
I use a project called Fluid Film after all the painting is done. You can google it and buy it locally. Get a wand and shoot it inside all the boxed in areas. It will creep everywhere and keep the rust away for good if you apply it every year.

Pine would be too soft and would deform before the metal has taken shape. If you watch the side panel videos I made you will see the steel hammerforms that I made. Nice and clean. What gauge is that sheet metal? I did a custom body stretch on my TJ Wrangler. I decided to use a thicker 18ga. would have been nice to be able to form it as easy as this.
I use the original gauge when making parts, and this is 18 gauge in this video. You can also watch me make a rear floor out of 14 gauge which was a real bear to shape, but came out great.

This was one of the easier parts to make on a hammerform so I showed it being make on a simple wooden buck instead of the steel forms used in my other videos. If you are new to hammer forming this is a great piece to get started with. Give it a try sometime.
Are those regular pieces of 2x6? It’s wild that just those 4 clamps are enough to keep the metal from shifting. Since I have all this time from the neck surgery I’m revisiting your older videos to refresh myself so when I’m healed up I can attack my project with as much knowledge as I can absorb
No, the wood I am using is hard, Rock Maple. Douglas fir, hemlock, or spruce 2x material is much too soft to use. A good hardwood is necessary with a tight grain.
