Ruben ibañez awesome! Glad it helped!!
Awesome! All I was looking for!!!
Glad I could help
Great video man!
Thank you!
Your daughter helped push me over the edge to go with this lens. You do nice work, Tony!
Haha thanks for watching!
Thanks dude you answered my questions
Awesome! Glad it helps! It’s a great lens!
Can’t wait to have this awesome lens on my kit..
It’s an incredible lens. I’ll probably always have it!
Great tip with the green tape. ✌
Great video. I'm not much of a macro photographer and I'm much more of a hobbyist who does sports photography and video for high school basketball. I've been using the 55-250 for the last 2 years and I'd like a little more aperture and just in general a sharper image. Is this lens something you'd recommend? I know it's a macro, but at 100mm, I find that's more often than not enough range for me anyway. Thanks!
Yea, this lens will def give you more light and honestly, I use this lens more for portrait and product photography than macro. The only thing you may not like is the fixed focal length. The 55-250 gives you lots of flexibility in a gym and you might find yourself too tight next to a basketball court. That’s just my thought. Keep up the good work!
Great review! Thank you. I was in two minds about this lens but after this, I'm getting it. Why not. With the versatility of this lens, it's perfect for what I'm doing...Subscribed & Liked! Well deserved...
Thanks so much for the sub! Really glad this video helps!! Enjoy, one of my all time favorite lenses!!
@@TonyMellinger Got the lens and started using it the moment i walked out of the shop, actually took my camera bag with, and i cannot tell you how much this lens has impressed... I would recommend this lens to anyone who is thinking about it....
Morne Coetzee yes! It’s so good!!! Seriously one of my favorite all time lenses!
Thanks Tony that was very helpful i just bought it!! I am a Real Estate and looking forward to video shots of my listings
Barry Roach I think you’ll love it! Very versatile for a prime!!
Thanks for sharing. Would you recommend it for a vlogger to shoot some b-roll and hobby photography? Having a 80D now with a 10-18mm lens for filming myself during vlogs + a 50 mm lens for photography. Would like to upgrade my (b-roll & photography) game, so checking out the right (and affordable) lens...
Ya, for sure. I love the 100mm on the 80D for Broll. It’s really tight though on a crop so just keep that in mind. You just need a few more steps behind you to get an establishing shot. Love the 10-18mm on the 80D as well. That’s what most of my vlog style shots are shot on. If you pair some establishing shots with the 10-18 and then use the 100mm for tight beautiful detail shots you’ll def step up your game. I do that a lot with my current setup.
Thx for your video
Thanks for watching
Hey Tony, fellow Missourian here! Are you still using the Ronin S or have you moved to something else with the Eos R? If so, have you played with the 100 2.8 on there? I’m looking at the Weebill s.
Hey there! Yes, absolutely still using the Ronin S with my EOS R. It works incredibly, even with the RF 70-200. ua-cam.com/video/-BH-XsAoYc0/v-deo.html The 100mm works great with that setup, highly recommend it! After all the abuse I’ve thrown at my Ronin S and it still works, I cant ever see buying another gimbal again. After 2 years of HARD work, it’s still kicking like it’s new!
I’m in STL as well and just bought this lens. Small world! I’m a CD and work a lot with the studios in town! Thx for a great review
Nice! Surprising amount of creators in STL have discovered me on UA-cam! Let me know if you ever want to get coffee and talk shop!
@@TonyMellinger absolutely will do! Thanks Tony
I think of getting this lens for watches photography, but i think its too zoomed in, 160mm on my 80d, so i maybe have more about a prime?? Or a 24-105 f4 or what prime would u recommend, my budget is under 1000 euro, say 1000$
Have you tried out the 50mm f1.8? That’s a killer lens for the price.! Also, I might check out the 35mm f2.0 IS. That’s pretty cheap and really good for video. The 24-105 f4 is also a workhorse and you can probably pick up a used one for cheap!
Hi, I wanted to know if I can use this one my canon M50 with a Comix mount CM-EF-EOSM?
If you can use EF glass with your adaptor, you can use this lens!
Great review but curious about your thoughts on using it on a cropped sensor? Would it be best to go with the canon 60mm 2.8 macro?
I think I’d still rather have the 100mm macro. I love the sharpness of this lens and as long as you have the room for the telephoto lens, I’d say the 100mm any day!
@@TonyMellinger I appreciate the reply. Ordered it last night. Looking forward to it. Keep up the great work. :)
R. Scott Duncan Awesome! You’ll love it!!
Would you recommend this lens for product Broll ?
items like phones, cameras, lenses, other small equipment..
Roma Fedorov ya, absolutely! It’d work great for that!
@@TonyMellinger cheers man, going to rent it tomorrow for a day. Hopefully it'll be good :)
Roma Fedorov awesome! One thing I didn’t talk about in the video is you have a switch on the side to select your focus. If you are only focusing on small things up close, you can switch it so it doesn’t hunt so far. You’ll enjoy it, it’s a great lens!
Thank you for your great review !
I want to ask, for portrait, compare to 85mm what's better ?
Isn't 100mm too long for portrait compare to 85 ?
isn't 100mm macro too sharp for portrait (not so dreamy) ?
Some of that is personal opinion but I shoot almost all of my portraits with my 70-200 over 100mm now though. If I could shoot them all at 200 I would ha! As far as the macro, it doesn’t really impact sharpness that far away from the subject. And you can always soften certain aspects of the photo if you want in post. Feel free to check out my instagram for lots of examples of what I’m talking about!
@@TonyMellinger thank you for your answer, I'll look forward your IG
HI Can you include a video how to use the "full", ".05m to infinity", and the .3m to .5m on the lens
Good point. Quick explanation is the 3 modes are so your AF doesn’t have to cycle through the whole range. If you know you’re going to be really close use the .3-.5. If your doing things that you don’t need to be close to the lens like portraits, use the .5-infinity. And then if you want maximum versatility but not in a huge hurry, use full
What are some places to go to get used lenses. Budget issues.
There’s a couple places I look. On of the first is Canons official refurbished webpage on their website. You can usually find a deal and still have the same warranty. They’ll even go on sale. Also look at B and H’s used section. Then I’ll check out Facebook marketplace, just make sure to test out the lens before paying for it. Make sure it focuses properly and all the functions work well.
loved your video,if you compare this lens to the canon ef-35mm,which one would you choose?
Those are two different lenses. It really depends what you need. The RF 35mm is much wider, which is better for wide open spaces. The 100mm has a much more natural look, great for flat lays and portraits.
@@TonyMellinger for insects i understand the 100mm will be better, will it be a problem to photo macro flowers and insects with the non l version,it doesn't have image stabilization i understand
@@TonyMellinger and another question, comparing the 100 non l to he sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro, what is more recomended?
Great video! I just have a question. Is that made in japan? Are all L lenses made in japan?
I’m guessing all L series lenses are made in Japan. It wouldnt surprise me if some of the cheaper lenses were made elsewhere to save cost.
Great video, and your daughter is so cute ^^
Minh Ho thanks!!
Tony wish you showed more macro shots using canon 100 f2.8. Show me what lens can do. Thanks a lot.
This lens def does macro but the point for me is it does so much more. There’s lots and lots of great examples of its macro capabilities! Hopefully the video helps!
dose this work with the 80d canon?
Sure does! I’ve gotten some incredible shots with the 80D and 100mm
@@TonyMellinger thank you. I'm doing some research and I'm thinking about picking this lens to add to my everyday camera bag.
I think iam going to get this lens to photograph watches, but do u recomment this for the 80d?? Its 160mm right??
That would be a perfect use for the 100mm. I use this lens on my 80D all the time! If you have the room for the crop factor , it’s a beautiful lens for the 80D. Tag me on Instagram if you end up going that route, I’d love to see what you create!
Would this lens work well with a canon eos rebel sl3?
ashxzombie19 absolutely. It would work great with an sl3. Just account for the crop on the sl3. 1.61x100 is basically 161mm. It still works great, just a little bit tighter of a shot than a full frame camer.
Tony Mellinger thank you so much for the fast response. I'm starting out with an actual camera and I'm really into macro I just got the sl3 and I really want this 100mm I just wanted to be sure they both worked well with each other.
ashxzombie19 you’ll love it. The SL3 is a great camera as well. The 100mm is a standard even in the professional world.
Tony Mellinger once again thank you for the help 😁
Wouldn’t a 60mm EF-S Macro Lens give sharper , crisper results on a Crop sensor camera like the 80D ?
The 100mm has much better glass, it’s one of the sharpest lenses I’ve used on almost any cameras, even cinema cameras.
Should this lens be compatible with any canon dslr?
Cade Smith yep, should be! If it uses EF or EF-S lenses you can use it! Almost all Canon DSLRs have this mount. The mirrorless ones dont but you can use adaptors made by canon to use them, like the EOS R
@@TonyMellinger ok. I'm a senior in highschool and graduation is coming up. I have a really old junk Rebel XS, just don't know for sure if it'd be worth trying to get this lens first, or snag the 80D and get this lens later when I can afford it.
Cade Smith i love the 80D but you can still create some epic content with that Rebel XS. Some cheaper options to look into for lenses are the 10-18mm stm and the 55-250mm stm. Both of those lenses are very versatile and you can catch them under $200 if you look on canon’s refurbished website!
@@TonyMellinger ok sweet. Thanks!
Cade Smith no problem! Subscribe for more tips and tricks!! Keep creating my friend. Don’t let being young hold you back, you are doing great things!
Great great review Tony but I still can't afford it yet. Anyway, your daughter is very cute!
Mom Sokvisal the way I get new gear is to buy what I can afford to get the job done and have people pay me for small projects. Save up that money for gear and Eventually you’ll be able to slowly trade up to what you want!
If it wasn’t for the longitudinal chromatic aberration, it would be perfect. Still my fav lens though.
We’ll see what happens with the RF version!
What are your thoughts on the non L version?
I’ve never used the non L version but if I remember right, it doesn’t have IS which is a big help with low light and video. I try and always pick up lenses that have IS if possible. I’ve heard that it can produce just as good of images though
Haha and it sticks out like an eyeball,,,,just bought a second hand without stabilization for $280,,, I am loving it
Wow, prices have almost doubled. This is $1300 new now, or $1k refurbed from Canon. I was thinking either this or the Tamron 90mm Macro for about $650.... does the "L" really make twice-the-price difference ? I'd be using it on a EOS 250D, pretty much stone cold beginner wanting to take macros of spiderlings I'm currently raising.
There’s no doubt I’m a canon snob but pretty much industry standard for macro is the 100mm macro. I haven’t used the tamron. I imasgine if you’re patient you could find a used canon 100 for about the same price, just have to decide if you’d rather have a new one.
I got a mint one off eBay for 650
I don’t shoot with anything that does not have a red ring
@@natestain7103 You sound like a director of gay porn.
@@arupian666 I don’t get it? Maybe cause I’m not gay nor have ever watched gay porn. I’ll trust you’re a subject matter expert in that area.
There is no IS in this lens
There is on the L series. The cheaper one doesn’t have IS
