Hi Andy, huge congratulations again. What a training block from yourself, and it was great to see it come together on the day. It was myself and my partner Katie who shouted you at 31 and 39 km. Thanks for the collection of Valencia training videos, we have taken great pleasure in watching them.
Phenomenal effort, i always say a slight negative split is the best way to run a marathon if you are well trained... i remember a video well over a year ago when you mentioned one day you'd get sub 3 and had a steely look in your eyes, and i knew there and then youd get there! You were only running around 3:42 at the time!
It's the narrowly missing our goals that keeps us hungry for the next one. This was an ambitious target after Newport. You raced it to perfection given the conditions, I'd say. Well done mate.
I think Week 1/16 Andy would have killed for the splits and results achieved here. If the biggest regret is a slower start, then you’ve smashed the marathon. A year of substantial PBs that have inspired us all! 🎉🎉
Your training was insane! Videoing and talking will have 100% added effort and time to it so you can basically count yourself as a 3:20 marathoner 😅 I was 1 second over my half goal and still haven’t been that fit again to beat it, kept me up at night for weeks 😂
Great job at the race and during training. The video was awesome, too. I appreciate all of the hard work that goes into producing your videos. Keep them coming.
Congratulations Andy, I’ve enjoyed watching your 16 week Valencia training. You absolutely nailed it and it was very well deserved… you absolutely did the right thing with a steady start… a strong finish in a marathon is much sweeter than a struggle! 👌👍🙌 plus you know you’ve got more in you for sure! Very inspiring for many!
I ran London on a very warm April, and died big time , really well done mate , dwell on the positives ,we all know there's so many things that can go wrong on the day but which you got right, pat yourself on the back and look forward to a solid winter training with the guys and gals from the club on the roads and go into the spring even faster and stronger than ever before,
Congrats Andy! A brilliantly executed marathon. I wouldn't sweat about those potential lost seconds. Giant pb and you'll be miles under it at the next one. Not like missing sub 3 or 3:30. On pacing. Hopefully obvious point. You'd be daft to only look at your watch, but it's also not some mysterious thing where you need to second guess it. Glance at overall elapsed time when you hit the markers/mats at every 5 or 10k. That's what tells you concretely how much ahead or behind you are and how out your watch is. Adjust based on that.
I get the frustration. I trained hard for the Lanzarote Half Marathon and a sub-1:25:00 finish and in the end I was 1:25:21. On the day the 23 degree heat just zapped me.
You seem a little down about this absolutely incredible time and performance, missed it by a couple of seconds but man you have just proved what can be achieved with hard work and commitment and finishing so strong. Now time to hurry up and smash that sub20 and sub40 while you’re at it.
You should be incredibly proud of that run. I think the fact your 35-40k split wasn't super fast shows that you paced it very well. The steady start would have really helped keep your core body temperature under control. On a slightly cooler day a sub 3:20 would have been possible I think. Remember you have just run a 15 mins pb. At this rate you are going to be sub 3 this time next year, and at the LA Olympics in 2028! Appreciate the big PB's whilst you can.
Completely agree with all of this. Had Andy gone out any harder there is no way he would have been able to finish so strongly. Not being able to finish like that would probably have meant a slower overall time.
You did the right thing on the day..gone out harder on a day leading to 20plus degrees would have cost you..I have no doubts about that... congrats well done...changes you made in this block shows you are only at the start of your marathon journey and you have more to get out of yourself yet.
Set in stone now so you should be proud of what you achieved. I missed sub 40 by 3 secs on my last race. Found peace with it and we again. It's never done 🙌 great recap and breakdown
I definitely think you made the right decision to hold back a little in the first half and maintain a relatively strong pace, particularly for the last 10k. I was on target for 3.15-3.18 but got progressively faster each 5k split and finished on 3.25 disappointed. You were in control & delivered. Well done!
Grsat one Andy, im following the same output of valencia as you 😂😂 You did a great job. Will be good to hear your 2025 goals , and get sogned up for another one quick 😄 Get back to training, i started again yesterday 😮
Interesting analysis Andy and very informative. I wonder if my Coros combined with foot pod would've done better with gps and pace? Not a criticism, just a thought. Well done again.
Congrats mate! For your problem with the watch being slightly off the timing of the course as you said about 10secs per 5km which adds up, what I done for my only marathon so far (So maybe not amazing advice but worked for me in Berlin this year) was manually lapped every 5km as I went over the timing mats. So afterwards the 5km splits were maybe 5.02/03 splits as you know yourself you run long over the course. But on the day it gives you a bit closer information at that exact time. Then you can work out in your head how far behind/ahead you are for that split depending on what you had planned. Hope that helps!
You did amazingly Andy! Proper chuffed for you. Do you get depressed after big events and after achieving massive goals like this? I sometimes feel lost. Just wondering how you cope with it?
Surely when you say sub 3:20 you mean less than 3:19:59? It was a great run though, very impressed. I thought you were making a big mistake setting such a target but hats off to you, did really well.
Well raced. How does track help? Leg turnover and mechanics, development of type 2a muscle fibers and fast twitch muscle fibers. You can’t change VO2 max (to any significant degree)
You should be proud of your achievement - a 15 minute PB in that heat is amazing. 3.20 is just an arbitrary time. Take the massive win!
Agreed. Congrats Andy. You ripped it!

I think you paced it brilliantly, very well done. Also, your race video was the most enjoyable one I've watched on here so far 👍
Great series Andy! Have loved it . Signed up for Valencia 2025 today 😁👍
Outstanding performance Andy! Absolutely smashed it.

You'll be gunning for sub 3 marathons soon, this is valuable experience in that endeavour.

You just nailed it champ. Inga Dk.

It was all going so well Andy, Liverpool fan from the Midlands though... 🤦♂️
At least I'm not a UTD fan from London. Or from anywhere tbh.😂

I wanted to run a 3:20 - which as far as I was concerned was a 3:20:59. Gutted to miss out by 2 seconds. It still hurts.
👌👍
Well raced. How does track help? Leg turnover and mechanics, development of type 2a muscle fibers and fast twitch muscle fibers. You can’t change VO2 max (to any significant degree)
Sub 20
Not sure on your 10k Goal but it should be sub 40
1:30 Half
3:10 Mara
They are my educated guesses!
Did you do a marathon mate? should have done some videos about it 🤣 Only joking - You would deffo be a 3:20 runner without the faff of filming
Andy think instead You could have done worse!
Lol, if you hadn't filmed it you would have got 3:20, but if nobody knew about it, what would it matter. Good effort, lose 10 kg youll go under 3
