I would want to have covers on the shoes to protect the clothes from the dirt that shoes pick up.
I so want to be there when Rebecca is trying to explain to the TSA why she needs a three foot needle in her luggage, never mind also having another 4 1 foot needles in an apron. Hope you have a great time at Coco.
The needles are going into checked baggage and TSA lets all kinds of things into checked baggage they don't allow onto the plane.
I honestly don't think the needle will even be picked up, since it's made of wood, not metal. The one time TSA questioned me on the way to costume college was when I had brought like 3 or 4 tiaras, and the lump of them all together was apparently suspicious. 😂
What I get from this is that major hotels should have tripods to rent hourly, and nooks and alcoves customized for filming during conventions.
I'm not sure it would work as well for costumes, but I'd generally recommend hard shell cases for breakable checked items. My husband once had handlers break his audio equipment and rip his bag. He hasn't had a loss or damage since switching to a hard shell case.
Oh wow! I've never used a hard shell case before, but that's a good point! And yeah, it would be nice if I didn't have to bring stuff like a tripod!
When I used to travel a lot, I had a saved printable checklist for each kind of trip: business, ski trip, scuba diving trip, summer vacation, etc. That way I would not forget anything. Have you considered shipping the awkward things to the hotel? Some hotels let you do that ahead of time. If that is not an option, perhaps you could ship it to a friend, or local fellow attendee? I hope you have tons of fun at costume college!
I miss traveling a lot….my packing skills was getting to gold tier…..packed to max but some how always have space for new things! Lol
One of my socal friends has offered that I could ship things to her, but that's a lot of extra expense, plus I would worry too much that it would get lost, damaged, or delayed. And my mom used to have saved packing lists like that too.
Yes I have printed outfit lists that I combine for events/trips that include seasonal variations. In fact I have printed lists for every type of travelling i/we do. Takes so much worry off whether I'm going to forget something. And saves time after the first compilation. Enjoy CC Rebecca - I will get there one of these days but it would be a major holiday coming from the UK so I need to persuade my OH he'd like another holiday in the US!
@@petapendlebury9024 I'd bet you could use Google Sheets to assemble lists through references and filters. For instance, have a one sheet with all pieces, one for each outfit that references the full inventory, and then a packing list that uses the outfit sheets and filters for duplicates. And maybe start the packing list with the stuff you always need, like steamer, iron, toiletries, etc. Shouldn't be too hard to set up as equations, though inventory and outfit lists might be a lot to set up.
Omg I always telling myself to do this every single trip I make but never seems to do it 😂😂 you’re so right !!
Darn that’s lots of logistics! Have a wonderful time at coco!
Have a wonderful time. Fingers crossed for smooth traveling.
I’m finally getting to attend CoCo in person!! I’m so excited to see all the things and meet all my favorite Costubers this year. Can’t wait to meet you, Rebecca!
Wonderful! I'm sure you're going to have so much fun. And please say hi if you see me!
Perfect timing!!! My daughter and I are packing today for our first CoCo!
Thank you for all your tips. So helpful.
I’m so excited for my first Costume College! But, oh boy I need to get organized!!!!! Hope to see you there and say “ hello”!
It would be so cool to see these outfits in real life!
Just have a stress-free glorious time🎉❤.
No Costume College, but I will be packing my kids for their vacation. No, my comment was that this gave me real insight into packing in the day, so to speak. I'm sure even one LARGE steamtrunk made for difficult choices, and hard packing. Good luck. Have fun. Be safe!
My first time at CoCo! Very new experience for me!!
Yay! Make sure you wake up early to attend the freshman orientation - I remember it being helpful my first year. And please say hi if you see me!
As a former airline employee, all your electronics, your medications (properly labeled) and breakables go in your carry-on. Never in your checked luggage. Also all you need for the first day and night. I can see you know this but I thought I would mention it for others. I would also make a detailed spreadsheet of everything in the checked luggage, that way if it should disappear you have an itemized list of everything you are claiming. I hope everything goes well and you have fun.
Note I make a detailed spreadsheet with two check boxes when I travel one for leaving and one packing up to go home.
So fun to see how you pack all those fluffy dresses. Looking forward to seeing a video at costume college. I enjoy watching the dresses and interactions
Have fun at coco. I wish I were going too. Maybe one day.
I wanted to attend this year, but things didn't work out. Thus, I'm going to CoCo next year for the first time ever. One of the things I'm taking away from this video is to make sure the props can fit in the checked bag as I make them. 😉 Not that I have any props yet, but that seems to be a very smart idea. ❤
Yeah, I didn't even think about props, since I don't think I've ever brought props to costume college before. I'm glad mine managed to fit, and hopefully the needle doesn't break in transit!
If you used hot glue for the pink feathers, use a hair dryer to loosen hot glue, then pull the feathers out. You can reheat the glue on the other end to reinsert the feathers.
That's so smart! I just pried them out. I'll try the reheating trick when I get there though!
for long thin items like your "needle" prop, you can make a custom sized protective case out of PVC pipe and fittings. Only thing is - LABEL them. The blocking wires for my knitting went to my son's duty station and his fishing rod was left behind LOL.
I am making these comments as the video goes, so, much like your list, I keep editing.
I'm sure it is too late, but a pvc pipe might make good travel storage for all the dowels.
Have you ever considered mailing some of your props and hats ahead of your flight?
Walmart sells hanger racks for around $20 if you ever need extra storage in a hotel.
What do you mean by hanger racks? Like, be a clothing rack, or did you mean packs of hangers? And yeah, I know that some people have shipped things before, but I've never felt the need.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions We always called them a hanger rack because you hang clothes on them, but yeah a clothing rack is what I meant. They are cheap, they never last too long, but work well in a pinch to keep stuff organized. We used them for our choir robes.
I was thinking shipping hats and props might make sense because you can pack them more protectively and not have to worry about them getting crushed or maimed.
I think you absolutely made the right choice for comfort, packing practicality and also weight restrictions for your bags. Also, completely LOVE you white blouse with the flowers!
Wow, packing for Costume College is like putting a massive puzzle together, and you did it! This is going to be a spectacular event having taken three years to get here. I discovered Costume College, here on the tube, before the callosal germ and I am addicted! Thank you, Rebecca, for taking your camera so that we can share the joy!
xoxo's Sandie🤗
Well done! Some year I will make it to America for Costume College. But not this year.
Leaving furbabies is the hardest thing and I love love love that 19 teens dress, fabulous.
Definitely. I know they'll be well taken care of by my friend who is house/pet sitting, but still! And thank you!
havent finished yet, but i would think for your hats and props, safely boxing and shipping them to a ups location in your destination would be way safer. flights are over crowded now and people are jamming as much as they can into the overheads (and i do mean JAMMING). double box your hats and send them early enough for the longest travel time and pick them up on arrival. for the dresses, or at least the under stuff, i think i would use vaccuum bags and take a steamer with me.
Vacuum bags are the best invention ever, especially for awkwardly shaped or bulky items.
For smaller things we often use regular ziplock bags in whatever size is needed, just do the zip up most of the way and then squeeze as much air as possible out and zip the last little bit, the bigger bags can fit a days worth of clothing, sometimes more if it's thinner finer garments... I packed all of the gear my daughter took for her year 6 school trip to the snow into a bag for each day's outfit, and she put her dirty washing back into each bag at the end of the day... no smelly, dirty, wet or muddy things scattered throughout her port and mixed with anything that was still clean or wasn't used. ;)
Doing the video as a dry run for the actual trip is a GOOD IDEA.
So glad you will be attending CoCo. I considered attending for the first time this year but my health was questionable. Since them I have had a kidney transplant, so I'm glad I didn't register. I'm hoping for next year. I can't wait to see your videos at CoCo and I hope you have the best time ever!! Safe travels.
I love a good packing video. Planning and packing are some fun parts of holidays in my opinion!
So excited to see what y’all get up to at costume college! Have safe travels and a marvelous time!
👋 i hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness prosperity love and peace 💞❤️🕊️🕊️ all over the world 🙏🌍
I'm originally from Canada currently living in Key West Florida☀️☀️☀️☀️and you where are you from if i may ask???..
One of my favorite videos of yours. Would love a pack with me for 2024 Coco!
Wow, that is a lot to try and pack. You may know this hack; but if you use tissue paper around your costumes, the fabric will not be wrinkled, when you unpack it. I know that is A LOT of tissue paper, but I promise you it will work. You could pack all the dress rolled up even tighter. I bet it would save you a lot of time, unpacking. This hack is very helpful with taffetas, silks wools and cotton fabric. The tissue paper around your hats is also a great help. Just try it. 😉
I think you just proved that trial run packing is a necessity for trips such as this. Have fun at costume college!!!
I love videos like this because it lets me see just how you would pack for a trip like this. My only tip is a generic tip, and it's what you're already more or less doing, but all of those small items roll up and fit very well inside of shoes or other odds and ends and help keep things from being crushed.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at CoCo! We need to do a meet up! Fortunately, I'm within driving distance, but I still gotta pack, so this was helpful. I also need to finish two outfits (yikes!)
I hope you can get everything done! And yeah, packing in a car is so much easier than in suitcases. Please say hi if you see me there!
This video is me packing our family trips to Disney World. Last trip we had 9 pairs of ears each (myself and daughter), 9 ear hats (custom made by my mother for my son), 9 outfits for my kids, my disneybounds, etc. It was insane. I buy plastic tubs for my ears that fit in my suitcases and packing cubes are a must. I also have a suitcase that is hard with two deep halves. One half is zippered shut and I gently fold my dresses in there. Then promptly hang them when we land. Packing for big trips and events are hard. I feel you!!
Thanks for sharing. Your packing makes me think what they actually used back in the 1880s. Pity you don't have one of those big trunks, that has a hook that you can hang the coat hangers from. Have a wonderful trip, be safe and have lots of fun. Wish I could be there. But alas in Australia.
I can't imagine having to move one of those giant steamer trunks, though. We don't have porters and servants nowadays!
Good luck on costume college! I am so looking forward to the videos!
It's always so interesting to see how other people tackle packing. My strategy is always to roll things up as small as they go and if it doesn't all fit I sit on the suitcase whilst my other half zips it up 🤣
Definitely not great for the longevity of the suitcase, but useful when I've spent too much on fabric from the local market on holiday!
I will be there! Excited to meet you. Thanks for the hat box tip- I am not bringing one, but I will be making one in a workshop, so I think I will bring a hat box for the trip home. Where did you get yours?
Make sure if you're flying that you leave room for the hat box to come home with you! I get pretty much all of mine at the thrift store, though I've seen them reasonably priced at places like Ross, too. And please say hi if you see me there!
Southwest Airlines also has an AMAZING "persons of size" policy! You can get a FREE extra seat (or even 2) if you need them!
Costume college... some day... This was HUGELY helpful, as I am contemplating packing some period clothes for ArmadilloCon in Austin. Thank you!
This gave me secondhand anxiety watching you try to fit everything! 🤣 Will you be vlogging Costume College? I'd love to see a vlog of your time there!
Have so much fun!!!!
I dabble in sewing handbags. I have spoonflower print fabric of my paintings. And make bags from that fabric. Have fun at CoCo. I'll be there in spirit with you all.
Someday I would love to come to Costume College… if I do, I’ll be sure to bound happily up to you and introduce myself. ;-)
Some very good points for anyone who is packing. Plus the advice and demo of costume packing. Very Interesting.
I don't know how usable it will be for you but I love my Pack Mate vacuum bags! You don't need a vacuum cleaner to get the air out, you can roll, lie or sit on them. Perfect for petticoats, fluffy bathrobes or to store your "needs laundry" clothing in a suitcase half full of unworn items... 😅 Have fun at Costume College!
Update: I just started packing. Holey moley, this is overwhelming, even with a list! This is my first year at CoCo. I only have a few costumes, but it's still a lot to pack and remember.
This is cool. I love watching real life Tetris. Thanks for the tips. One day, maybe I’ll be traveling again. Not any time soon though. Oh. My list I make a paper master and put it on dry erase for myself to erase as I pack for things.
Very fun video! I WISH I was going to Costume College! Its interesting to me to see you planning out the costumes you're going to wear and figuring out your packing procedure, as well. I'm happy you are taking the Votes For Women dress; it definitely deserves more exposure! Have a wonderful time!
Just watched this again ,as it is super helpful. You are the most wonderful common sense packer. Particularly as you changed gears and adapted to scale with
n the finite space and fragile construction elements in your work. Brava!😅
Thanks! It's always quite a challenging puzzle to pack for a costumed trip!
Looking forward to the photographing video! have fun at Costume College!!
You did it!
What amazes me, is how one can go to New York, say, to buy the fabric for multiple projects, and it all fits comfortably in one small suitcase. Then you make it up, not even using all of it, and it expands to need three or four large bags.
Yeah, structure makes all the difference. Me, I've got six or seven outfits I'm working on for an event, and I'm already worried about fitting it all in.
I just got done with watching all your Costume College videos, and they were all very interesting; also all your costumes are quite lovely. One day I will probably go.
Have fun at Costume College. Hope you'll show us lots of pictures!
Someone else has mentioned this, but I have a few stock packing lists (overnight trip, weeklong trip, camping trip) so when I'm making up a list for a trip, I can start there and then add anything specific once I know all my bases are covered.
Your 19-teens dress is one of my favorite of your dresses. Glad you're getting to wear it. Not taking classes at Costume College, but hoping to go to the Marketplace. Hope to say hi.
Can I make a suggestion? Transfer all the information on the packing list for each outfit to computer. Then you can print out the list for each outfit you have (with checkboxes if you want!) any time you want it. In the long run it will save you a lot of time.
Your so helpful love this so much love zipping sounds for vacation so relaxing
That's a lot of packing. Good job.
I'll be travelling too, I've got a class in Texas to take for work. So while I won't be going to costume college, this packing video is helpful when thinking of the packing I will be doing. Have fun out there!
Ever try packing everything in a big box and shipping it to receiving department of wherever you are going to? would save time and effort getting there, less ironing, more things to be able to choose from. Another airline without the two checked bags nay be cheaper than SW. May take a week to get there so planning needed. The place you are going to may not have a shipping department. May be less of a hassle than the airport(s) baggage handling!
To me, it just sounds like a) extra cost, b) extra nerve-wracking, in case it doesn't show up in time or gets damaged, and c) extra hassle of packing/shipping/etc. Southwest is luckily the cheapest airline anyway, so it's definitely my go-to.
I'm curious how you budget space for bringing back fabrics and other things that you buy. Or do you have enough willpower not to buy things? That is a big challenge for me when I go to any type of conventions.
I don't tend to buy a ton, and what I do usually buy is silk, which packs up really small, so usually it's not really an issue. I'm also not using any expanding zippers on my suitcases right now, so I could always make them a little bigger.
This was fun! I haven’t had to pack costumes, but I have similar ‘how to make it fit’ problems going to our annual art supplies conference, with classes.
Couldn't manage CoCo itself, but I'll definitely be around for the LA fabric district tour! If you're doing that, maybe I'll be able to meet you there.
Wish I were going! I’m all packed for Salt Lake City …. Have fun!
Very envious of you all being able go to this fun event!!
This video was very helpful to me. I am 70 years old and this will be the first time I will be going to costume college or anything remotely like that. My name is also Rebecca and I look forward to meeting you in person. I watch all your videos and wonder at times where you wear all those costumes you make. I love sewing costumes but sadly have no place to wear them. But…….see you at costume college!
I'm glad it was helpful! Finding places to wear them can definitely be a challenge, depending on where you live. And please say hi if you see me next week!
Great tips! I've never taken a carryon and it's such a good idea. I've seen you at Costume College but we've never said hi. Perhaps next year!!
I am a nightmare packer. It is sooooo hard. Love watching you, though. :)
One year I will make it to costume college, im from UK,
I wish I could go this year, but alas my daughter is having my first grandchild and that is far more important, maybe next year ❤️
Oh my gosh. 😲This is a random video that appeared in my feed, and the title intrigued me, so I decided to watch it. I was blown away by the thumbnails of your 6 costumes!! 😲 Which you made!! 😲😲 I like Lion, and adore Dora (I'm a cat person. 😜), & you are so charming and beautiful and personable. 😍 So of course I hit the 'Like' & 'Subscribe' buttons at the end, and I'm going to start watching your older videos. I can hardly wait to see you dressed up at Costume College. Have a fabulous time. Warm regards from Ontario, Canada. 😻❤
My first Cc! I am extraordinarily geeked.. I look forward to meeting you. You are the owner of a most informative blog.
Aww thank you! And yay - I'm sure you will love it. Please say hi if you see me!
What an adventure!
One of these times I might see about attending but if I remember right the dates don’t really work (unless the dates move/d) I think the last one I looked into was first week of August or something and that’s both my anniversary and my husbands birthday that week.
If nothing else I love seeing the content that you and others film.
I'm really going to miss all the coco videos this year... not being in America, attending in person isn't going to happen, but with the videos and livestreams last year I learned soo much and had so much fun! Really love a good organisation vid, have you thought about making a exel spreadsheet for your costumes? So you always have a complete list for everything you need for them and don't risk missing something. Have fun at coco!😊😊😊
I really should do that! I went back and watched old videos/looked at old pictures, but an excel sheet would be a lot smarter!
I have my packing list made. Tomorrow is laundry and packing day! I'm glad I am driving because I have not only costumes and all the other necessary CoCo stuff, but I have stuff for my service dog and a whole bunch of medical stuff. I'm super thankful I am able to travel, but it's a lot of work. I can't wait for CoCo!! So if you see the lady with a purple and black poodle, that's me. Come say hi 🐩
Very excited to see pictures and film from you trip! Be safe and careful. It seems that many people coming back from conventions in my feed are coming back with Covid and I don’t want that for you. Have fun!
Thanks! I'm probably going to be masked most of the time, so hopefully I'll be okay! 🤞
Have fun, safe travels!
Lots of fun. Thanks for sharing :)
I’m so looking forward to looking at all of those outfits close up!
This will be my first time attending CoCo and I’m so excited!
Yay! I'm sure you're going to love it. Please say hi if you see me!
I'll be there. In fact, I think you are bringing the pliers for my wire hat frame class. :)
I'm not going this year, but I'm hoping to go next year. Have fun.
Have fun!
Sound a lot like packing to mive from Hawaii to texas for us...some things had to stay in hawaii...packing tetris is a puzzle that we just have to do if we want to get to our destination.
This was such an incredibly helpful video. Thank you so much. I am signed up for your class and really looking forward to it!
Vacuum bags for each days clothes etc . Easy to pack and organise
But then what do you do on the other side if you don't have a vacuum?
@@LadyRebeccaFashions 😆😆suck hard? I’ve found that most hotels will let me borrow one, at least in Europe.
Loved your video! I am going to Costume College for the first time in person this year, but I am only planning 2 costumes. The first costume is for the Gala (Titanic Era costume) and the second is for the Wrapper Parade on Sunday morning. Hope to meet you there!
Nice to see a Saturday video from you again. :) I'm glad you managed to fit what you needed in your suitcases. When you know you're going to travel, how do you find someone to watch your pets?
Luckily one of my friends is an awesome house/pet sitter (don't worry - I pay her, too!)
I’m attending my first Coco this year- looking forward to meeting you (awkwardly) in person! I’m absolutely terrified that my luggage is going to get lost and I’ve been so busy with work and my builds that of course I’ll be packing the night before. Eeep.
I know, I think we're all especially nervous about the airline side of things this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, and please do say hi if you see me!
see ya there! and OH do I feel your pain with the packing. I have been adjusting and adjusting for the past 2 weeks. some of my favorite costumes I can't bring for exactly the reasons you are stating.
Hi, hope you have an amazing time at costume college, I must admit I am a organised (OCD) person, so list's are great and I try to pick a colour theme, I've never used a case bigger than a one you can use as a carry-on but I'm not going away with beautiful creations. 💖
Like, you've never ever used a suitcase larger than a carry-on size? 😯 And thank you!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions honest never, sometimes I just use a shopping tote,I'm away in 3 weeks and I'm just going to use the biggest shoulder bag I have, the bulkest thing I have to pack is meds and shoes. It's only a week. So looking forward to seeing your vlogs about cc, 💖
I wonder if something like a vacuum sealer would be useful for pettie coats etc.? Save some space that way
It's possible, but then they'd get extra wrinkled. Plus, vacuuming them up again on the other side would be difficult!
I will never forget the time I picked up my friend (now husband) from the bus stop after he visited his family during a semester break at university and came home with apples packed in his shoes, courtesy of his mother :) I never let her live that one down either, she maintains that in her defense, they were brand new shoes... and to this day, we don't leave anything packed when we get home from a visit in case she snuck something in somewhere!!
And good reminder about usernames, I started going to a convention for another special interest where I knew most of the people from a forum, so most of us scribbled "AKA: " on our real name nametags so we could find each other! Maybe some day I'll be able to afford to travel again, Costume College is on my to- do list.
That's a really good idea about the usernames! I remember one year, someone brought blank ribbons to costume college, and we did that (back in the livejournal days), but no one has ever done it since.
Hmm...wonder how much money I could make selling hangers in the hotel parking lot...LOL! But great tip and not something I would've thought of because there is never enough hangers!
I bet you'd make a pretty penny! Get yourself a couple hundred of the nice velvet ones, and a bunch of clip hangers too, and they'd be gone in a flash! 😉
I'm watching this while sitting in the gate area for a southwest flight and I wish someone was here in a giant pink bonnet!!!
You're just flying on the wrong day! Who knows what you'd see before/after costume college!
