What does that big spring do? I took mine off on my truck because my new drums didnt have the slot for them. Is this a problem? Ive been having problems with my brakes where they work when its off but when i turn it on they sink to the floor. Could that big ass spring be why shits not working?

Hi, I have a question, once you have removed the rivets and disassembled hub and drum, and you need to put all back together, do you need rivets to keep them together?

xja6716 hi, no, once it’s back together and the wheel is on, the lugnuts keep the drum in place 👍🏻

there is 4 -5 small bolts tween the lugs they stick out a few treads yours look a little short mabe wrong bolt any way on mine -53 m37 - just run those small bolts in not out it pushs drum off easy ive seen people grind those bolts off and almost ruin the drums

What exactly does the spring around the drum do? Is it necessary to have on? I'm having trouble getting mine back on, is there an easy method you use?

Alex Aviation it is supposed to act as a dampener for braking vibrations. I didn’t put mine back on and it still stops silently over a year later, I wouldn’t worry about it (but also wouldn’t throw it away).

Do you know the size of the threading on a castle nut for a 72 c20 8 lug? Lost, it need a new one and I've gone to like 10 places, nobody has the correct size

My '69 still has the riveted hub/drums as well, I'll be separating those here shortly to replace the drums. How did it go cutting those rivets out?

It wasn't bad at all, made a vid of it but forgot to edit and post, will do that. Just took an angle grinder to them and punched the hub away from the drum with a hammer. Didn't punch the rivets all the way out, just ground them flush with the hub surface (new drum wouldn't fit on without them flush). Forgot to film most of the time (I'm new here) but if you have any questions hit me up, I just replaced my shoes, hardware, repacked bearings and hubs, replaced wheel cylinders and drums. Stops a little better (still manual drums tho) but now my brakes are dead silent.

Uploaded the vid, made it a 6X timelapse because otherwise it is a very boring 12 minutes of grinding and hammering.
