    A disturbingly fragile building; all that un-reenforced brickwork and wooden framework. An accident waiting to happen. Good looks and sentiment do not save lives in a disaster.

    This is the third such video I have seen today. It is the best, with good working pace, good and interesting editing, and nobody jabbering endlessly in the background.
    I agree about the lumber (timbers). It's waste to just mash it up carelessly. It would have been worth the contractors while to pile it up for sale.

    Look at all that old growth lumber that’s going to waste, it would make some beautiful furniture.

      Don't bet on it. There are numerous outfits who salvage structural timbers such as these. Back in the day, they may have gone to a landfill etc but no more. Heart pine and old growth fir are extremely valuable for flooring, paneling etc. I'm sure someone somewhere was aware that this building was going to come down and had a look inside. The problem with the stuff is, even if they gave it to you, you have to be able to handle it, move it, store it etc. and items like 12 x 12,s are HEAVY and AWKWARD. Trust me, been there, done that.

      @@davidglaum2538 Yes it can. When you get out into rural areas of the US, you'll find barns and other outbuildings built using Elm, Sycamore, White Oak etc which makes very nice furniture. There are hundreds of makers who specialize in just such items.

    i don't know why the owner was holding out so long against the city, would have taken millions to fix it all up. funny he put in all the new windows but didn't take the time to remove them,
    great video of it coming half down. hope you have more to come.

      Current owner not responsible for placing new windows, windows were put in by a former owner who constructed the two storey model suites located in the basement and ist floor

    Does anyone know: What is the purpose of the worker in the man lift? He doesn't appear to do anything. Is it some ceremonial thing? It seems odd. Thanks.

    • @rcguy1087
      @rcguy1087 4 роки тому +3

      Guy in the man lift is directing the machine operator. The appears to be a 60ft reach on the machine so the operator can't see anything once the claw attachment goes past the exterior wall. So the guy on the man lift will be saying left right up down open close ect. Also why the operation seems slow and of course having to work the front of the property with a open road and bus station next door in the center of the busiest part of the downtown core. Schouten must have bought a new toy since i lasted worked on their gear.

      A proper demolition with explosives needs good preparation, is expensive and is only feasible in the right location... Most of the times, an excavator is cheaper and faster, because you have to crush the concrete/bricks anyways and sort wood and metal out. If you blow it up, that leaves a huge pile and you can clean up the mess for days.
