sounds like parasites, but i'd triple treat just to be sure. first make sure its not just constipated by fasting him for a day, then giving him 5 minutes with a mirror (flaring encourages pooping). If you are now sure its not constipation, put him in a quarantine tank if you have one. If not you can treat your whole tank, all 3 meds I will recommend are snail/shrimp/plant safe. Triple treat with maracyn, ich-x, and api general cure (or fritz paracleanse). Make sure you have an air stone in the tank you are treating as the meds will change the visosity of the water and can inhibit gas exchange. Not a huge deal for the betta cuz it can surface breath, but if you are treating a whole tank your other fish/etc will appreaciate it. I do not follow manufacturers instructions, I only dose 1 time for each medication, only feed fish every other day and only just what they will eat. If you arent seeing signs of improvement by day 3 end, treat again day 4 morning. day 7 do a 25% water change and start again for 1 more week if needed, or return to main tank if not.
