I’m so confused why the police didn’t close the scene or even take pictures… even if it was the kids that took the money wouldn’t that still… make it a crime scene

I personally cannot help but think of the possible racism that prevented the police from inquruing more.... it was the 70's and maybe its because as a poc, my mind almost always goes there however, I couldn't help but wondering if they thought "yup another black kid leading a robbery" (a stereotype) and just didn't look more into it. Like the comment above mentioned the town has deep rooted history of racism so I just wouldn't be surprised if the cops lack of care, inquiry, and due diligence is due to Mark's skin colour.

I remember this. I am from a town 45 minutes from there. I was 22 then, had a one year old. It was the 70's. A lot has changed since then. The feeling of a lot of kids then was a free spirit. Petty thefts were common. Till then the biggest thing in Speedway was the Indianapolis 500. This was an awakening for the police to take all situations like this serious. They had a lot of learning to do for what should be done when reaching a situation like this. At this time Interstate 70, Interstate 65 and Interstate 69 cross each other in Indianapolis. It became and still is a big drug connection area. There still are drug gangs. Today the Mexican cartel is a drug gang and causes many problems in the US.

@@messymomentsss I'm one of the other races but suspecting racism at every opportunity is not a good idea. Also the other 3 where white. Who knows what races the officers were. People have been blatantly racist to me while just eating at a restaurant and other places I know how frustrating it can be an it still happens (not often tho )

Speedway Indiana was a sundowner town back then, I wouldn’t be shocked if law enforcement were involved. As soon as they realized a black kid was involved, they blamed it on drugs . Today is far more inclusive there now.

In November of 2018 four trees were planted in memory of Jayne Friedt, Ruth Ellen Shelton, Mark Flemmonds, and Daniel Davis at Leonard Park in Speedway. Each tree has a plaque next to it, telling people a little more about each of their lives.

PSA - If you are ever lost while hiking, get stranded with a broken down car, etc and you notice your cell phone is either low on juice or has no signal, here is a tip that very well may save your life.
Change the voicemail on your phone to a message that gives your approximate location, the time, the date, your situation (lost, out of gas, car broken down, injured, etc) and any special instructions such as you are staying with the car, you are walking toward a town, etc.... The best part of this is that even if your cell phone dies or stops working, voicemail still works, so anyone calling your phone looking for you will hear the message and know where to find you or where to send help.

I'm 9 minutes in to this video and just have to say something about the incident. Why did they open the store the next morning, knowing that this didn't feel right? They knew something was up and that the police were wrong. It shouldn't have been business as usual until they heard something else about the employees, just in case they needed to let police in to investigate. That was more important than them staying open to make more money for the owner. It's just sad.

    Hey Bella
Impressed with the amount of info on this case that you are able to give especially because your from down under!
The location is 10 min at most from my home ….. look into the kfc robbery in Kilgore TX in Sept of 1983 ….im convinced they used the speedway playbook …..”cold case files “. Did an episode on it in 2021….. I also believe that if they re examine the kids clothing again they will find that Jayne was raped/ assaulted. It would offer a different explanation as to why she was separated from the others …..it simply doesn’t make since why anyone would risk a 4 capital murder charges over 500 bucks divided 3 or 4 ways, the purps just like to kill and I think Jayne was the primary target

See this is why sometimes law enforcements don’t share info w/ the press, bc they either expose some of their evidence or information and it gives the perpetrators time to get rid of whatever they had, change their MO, flee, random people come forward to take credit w/ the info that was leaked, etc. Not saying we don’t deserve to know and that the press do some good by exposing some of the stories and help law enforcement by catching things they missed but I do think that sometimes there are people who are trying to get a “juicy” story to elevate themselves or try to be the first to say it.

Classmate of mine.. her friends happened to be bullys to me.. but she pulled me aside in 8th grade..in a after school meeting that she liked my oddness..and my unique weirdness. We were never close. 9th grade she went missing. We had English together. I remember looking at where she sat..and as time went..we knew she was missing missing...till months later she was found. I was fond of her. The way she was found.. the details amongst classmates.. live in my head. She had beautiful long blonde hair.. they chopped.. and she was violated.. she didn't deserve that. There was speculation of a similar murder in Fremont..similar m.o. I can't remember this guy's name... not enough was done..I don't know her loved one personally.. but it left a great impact.. even the girls who were mean to me..we have all grown up...I left my hometown at 18..so I don't have that life anymore..

Mark was my classmate , my cousin was the boy he switched shifts with at the last moment . This was such a heinous , heartbreaking thing to happen to the tiny town of Speedway . It was during the Brett Kimberlin bombings and murder of Julia Cyphers . There is a much more sinister plot behind all of this but …. I don’t feel it’s my place to say . Speedway’s dark and deep racism and police ineptitude played a huge part in this never being solved . The “ Vietnam Vet “ was a decorated war hero , father , husband and community member who took his own life years later unable to endure the pain and the life burdens of the injury Brett Kimberlin inflicted . Those poor kids were children . Children working at their first jobs , thinking about hayrides and prom, first kisses , trying new forbidden things as all teenagers do ( it was the 70’s!) . They were abducted , taken into the dark woods and coldly , senselessly murdered , may they all Rest In Peace and power .

My mom knew Jane in High School. She has talked about this case since I can remember. It has always bothered me. I was born in '78 and to this day, I still think about it. I do know there is a lot more to the "story" then what was said here. I hope your cousin doesn't carry any guilt.

I was a 70s teenager too. Those were wild years. I think its worse now. The kids these days have to worry about getting shot in
school! At least we didn't have that to deal with. It was all about free love, party's, drinking beer and smoking weed. ❤

i have a feeling like the guy who came into work "to help out" might of been the third person in who was writing the letters, he had access to the store, new the roster for the night and was the one who reported them missing. like you said who actually chooses to go into work on their day off? he knew the right people to call and that would of given him an alibi
