Now I finally know that this was a real slide. It's appeared in countless internet videos. It also makes an appearance in the opening slide show of almost every episode of Oddity Archive.

First time I've ever seen this graphic actually used by a station...my first thought is that it was a "placeholder" graphic for an audio-only EBS test, as others on YT have done. Thanks for sharing!

I have a strange memory of this one. I was living in Wilmington NC and WWAY 3 used this slide. Some Saturday in December 1979, programming kept being interrupted through the day with what seemed to be an actual emergency, followed by what sounded like a drive-thru speaker with someone saying it was a "practice exercise message". Funny thing, I always think those letters look like a ransom demand cutout!

WYTV-33 (Youngstown, Ohio: ABC) - used this "E.B.S." graphic back in the 80's - with "This is only a test" shown at bottom under the "E.B.S." logo for a good 10 seconds as the Attention Signal was transmitted from the EBS encoder.
Al Medvey, WYTV/EBS Announcement Open: "This is a test. This station is conducting a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test."
The Attention Signal was transmitted from the EBS encoder for 20 seconds. (with this "E.B.S." logo)
Al Medvey, WYTV/EBS Announcement Close: "This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The broadcasters of your area in voluntary cooperation with the FCC and other authorities have developed this system to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed where to tune in your area for news and official information. This concludes this test of the Emergency Broadcast System."

It was in Iron Mountain, Michigan, that's all I remember. I wonder if there's a place that has images of the earlier EBS test slides. Until the 80's most stations would just put up a stationary image like this one or the Civil Defense shield, and I'm certain most of them were just stock images...

Joe Pinner was Mr. Knozit. By the way, I graduated from Mississippi State with a Meteorology Degree when Ben Tanner was halfway through his studies. I think it was that deep-voiced announcer that did the EBS tests back then. That's what I know from my summer vacations at Myrtle Beach.

WKNO-TV 10 Memphis (PBS), used the aforementioned "Easter Egg" EBS logo for their tests in the 80's and 90's back when I was a kid. The abstract design and lack of on screen text was quite unnerving to me back then.

None of the Detroit stations had ovals with EBS letters in their tests. Most of them had Civil Defense logos. WXYZ-wavy lines (see WSMH), WXON (see WSNS) is all I remember. Did any of the Michigan stations have EBS ovals in their tests?

    • @jimmyboyzable

Pretty much ALL of the EBS tests frm Detroit had the CD logo (and colorful graphics) and even though these used to scare the BOO-HOOGIES out of me growing up, I remember one EBS test featured a pic of the Detroit Renaissance and the voiceover was done by a woman....

    • @nicka727

jim hatten what station in Detroit was that with the Detroit Renaissance voiced over by a woman? But needless to say WOWT NBC channel 6 is the Omaha area’s scariest EBS test slide of the 1980s better than Civil Defense logos on Detroit TV stations.
