I went hiking on an unusually warm Spring day. I brought my gouache paints with me and I spent the afternoon painting and making color matching videos. Gouache is really suited well for painting outdoors. It dries quick enough that you don't have to worry about smudging it on the trip home.
You can also soften edges and work back into previous layers. It cleans up with water and the Holbein gouache I use has no odor to it.
Gouache is easier than watercolor because it's opaque so you can paint over mistakes whereas transparent watercolor gets murky when you apply too many layers.

    AMPERSAND AQUABORDS
These panels have an absorbent clay coating that works well with gouache. Once the painting is dry you can seal it to protect it so that it doesn't have to be displayed behind glass. I used the flat 1/8 inch think version but they're also available cradled.
Here's the Aquabord listing on Amazon. I bought the 5x7 three pack but there are other sizes available in the dropdown menu amzn.to/3Vc6Sx9

    HOLBEIN GOUACHE
I like the Gouache from Holbein. A few of the vivid colors in their line aren't lightfast but there are many permanent colors to choose from. Here's a good kit to get started with on Amazon amzn.to/4atZnWI
It also helps to get a large tube of white because you go through white faster than any other color amzn.to/3yve6Dv
Here's the Holbein page on Blick which includes individual tubes and sets.

    RICHESON TRAVEL BRUSHES
This kit is great for painting outdoors. The handles are nice and short so they take up less space and the case protects the bristles from damage. Amazon: amzn.to/3SZfciI

    NEW WAVE POCHADE BOX
I realized that I would paint more if I had a small and convenient pochade box and this one from New Wave works great. It attaches to any tripod and it easily fits into my backpack. Below is a link to another video where I discuss what I like about it.

    TRIPOD
The tripod that I used in this video is my old one from the early 1990s. But I recently upgraded to a carbon fiber tripod from Sirui (pronounced Sue-ray according to the manufacturer). It's lightweight and easy to set up because the legs lock into place by twisting them rather than having to open or close 3 clips per leg. Here's a link to another video where I demonstrate how it works.

    GLOVES
Nitrile gloves make cleaning up outdoors much more convenient. When I'm done painting and cleaning up my brushes, I just remove the gloves and my hands are clean. I don't need to find a sink or carry extra water for cleaning my hands. I like to eat lunch outdoors and It's nice knowing that my hands are clean and I don't have any stray paint on my hands.
What I like about these gloves is they're thin and the fingertips have a fine texture on them so it makes it easy to grip your tools and brushes. Even though they're thin they don't rip on me. I went for the large size even though I think that my hands are more like a medium.

After many years in Gouache recently I started liking because of Gouache on Canson Art board...it comes out lovely and very enjoyable surface. Better than paper

I find gouache difficult because it looks different when it dries (matte) and it easily shows brush strokes when blending. But I am just a novice. Definitely a fun medium though. It seems to be commonly used for painting backgrounds in animation... At least before they went digital. Anyways, thanks for the video - Hope you have a great Spring!

Thanks, gouache has a few challenges but it's definitely easier than watercolor! I agree it's a lot of fun, especially for plein air painting.
