    I just picked me up a 1967 Johnson 20 HP. can't wait to start getting into it and see just what I got, isn't that just fun. It's a long shaft, it will go on my 1962 14' Hewescraft made here in Washington State. I tell you, this boat is deep and the long shaft will fit perfect. I'm always learning from your videos, thanks much.

    Boy you’re right on about those early 18-20 horsepowers I’d have to say my 1970 18hp Fastwin is about the most reliable motor I’ve ever owned. Real nice to work on and at around 80lbs. They got to be one of the strongest running motors per weight ratio!!! Just can’t beat em.

      @Derrick Smiley Yeah. Thats what I was going to say. I buy all my parts there. Cheaper (usually) and faster shipping (almost always).

    Pump Baby Pump ⛽🏋️‍♂️⛽🏋️‍♂️
    I would venture to say that the float level setting and the fuel pump may have been the so called timming issue.

    The first of the year I will wet honing and polishing of carbs and fuel pumps, and it’s the only way to get rid of the scale and the ring gear I would removed it

    The best cleaner I found for the older motors with purple power. I have put low speed needles in drill and smooth them out with like some 1000g sand paper

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 років тому

      Yeah Purple Power is the best, it even stripes off that oxidized old paint, but they didnt have any or I would have gotten it. thx again !

    I have an old 68 johnson fd21. Do you have any tips on disfunction fixing how shakey it goes when it runs? I'm also trying to figure out what carb kit I should be using to rebuild it.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  2 роки тому

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Shakey could be the timing is off, give it a good tune up. Carb parts here, www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1967&hp=20&model=FD21. Thanks again !

    You mention the cork type float in this video. Are the cork floats a problem? I found out that there isn’t any foam / plastic replacement for a 1966 and decided to modify a newly purchased foam float from a later model. I had to remove the bracket that holds the needle and replace it with the original one from the cork float. I used gorilla super glue to replace a section of foam that broke off from the new float and seems to be holding well. Was this a mistake? Should I have used the original cork float instead?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 років тому

      Well, its not that they're a problem. They just dont last as long as the plastic ones. I think its best to use original parts. I've never seen a foam float before. The cork floats are available if that one dosent hold up. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1966&hp=40 . Thanks again !

    Here's a little tip for that pain in the ass little spring and tip. Put crazy glue to the little plastic tip and the spring, then just a small dab of glue to the spring at the base so it stays put when you put the rubber gasket over it and your life just got a whole lot easier! Your welcome in advance.

    I use to fix them if I could replace the diaphragms,etc.now I buy the Chinese pumps for $11.00/pc. on E-bay and stock them.I heard they are pretty good pumps. Bombardiers Evinrude prices are thru the roof.I have gotton no fuel pump problems yet on motors I have sold or serviced with chinese pumps I knock on wood.If motor has a good used pump I include a new chinese as a spare for the customer or buyer of the motors I flip.Glenn P.

      Hey. Yeah. Hahaha , I buy them too! Thats why I said I can get them cheap! I've Hooked up a lot of people with them after they see regular prices, like you sad, Through the Roof! And I've never had a problem with them either. Thanks again !

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Yeah thats the way to go most times just change the pump with new like you do too.I like fixing things also if I can depends how ambitious I am that day .They are great motors those 18-25HP I agree one reason I enjoy working on them.Luckily they made them by the thousands over the late1950S-70S and there still abundant and sitting in basements,garages,sheds,backyards on the back of old boats you name it there still here. Mainly because of ther large manufacturing numbers and reliability has some say in the matter to you think ,LOL.........Glenn P.

    Thank you for the video.I have one of these Johnson 18hp motor's and it starts up but will not throttle up. And when it dies it clanks and kind of back spins.Seems it is out of time or something.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the awesome videos.Thank you

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 роки тому

      Hey. Maybe your plug wires are crossed? Clank or backfire. Also check that both pistons are traveling up and down, pull the plugs and hold a screwdriver on the top of the piston, slowly turn the flywheel and see if each one is traveling smooth. If its clanking it may be bad bearings or a broken rod. Have you tried a compression test? Also check the keyway that holds your flywheel in place. If its sheared or the gap in the flywheel is all stretched out it will throw the timing way off. Let me know what you find out. Thanks & Stay tuned !

      Your status plate located underneath your flywheel there's four screws holes it on there's a collar underneath it I used to take the collar and put it on the lathe and cut it down some and that would tighten the status plate up then the points would open and close when they supposed to

      I will check it out. I swapped out the control lever arm which helped a lot. There was a lot or slack in the throttle, It seemed to help. Haven't had it on the lake to test it yet. Need to find a Skag for it now since mine has a big crack in it. Can't find one on line. I JB welded it but idk if it will hold. Wish I had all your knowledge. Thank you for your help .I truly appreciate it.
