I just wanted to let you know, a friend of mine was really into photography in high school, she would go to concerts and just take photos, over time she eventually made a CAREER out of it, and she now hosts or DJ’s for emonites in her city, it can really bloom into more than what you expect, so just photograph everything! You never know what will come from it ❤

Fellow photographer who is also struggling with cilents it’s really takes a lot of free shoots , doing things you don’t love and connecting with others that helps boosts your name recognition !
It’s an industry filled with photographers yet there’s only so many amazing ones and cilents who have a favourite will stick to their favourite which makes the job harder

Hi. I graduated college in 2022 and have had similar issues. I have a few tid bits of advice you can take if they seem helpful or leave them haha.. Got to do this in little chunks. UA-cam doesn't like the big summaries.

First, making money is important if you are at home so you can have a pocket of money being saved so you can make a game plan to leave the hometown you hate ( really work on game plan so you dont get caught in the comfortablilty of where you are. Dont settle. You can leave and go whereelse you want to as long as you work toward that goal.) Job wise I know that alot of schools are desperate to hire subs, aids, even temporary teachers. They are hiring anyone with any bachelor's degree. Subbing in small towns that are more desperate for employees will pay big bucks. I'm in a small town and subs make like 200 a day. You could also private tutor, be a nanny ( they big bucks) people joke about feet pictures but I kid you not I have a few friends who pay rent with feet money. Id say work somewhere where you have smaller hours like maybe 3 to 4 hours a day or 8 hours 3 days a week, something that doesn't feel overwhelming but is bringing in some income. I know it may feel unsatisfying to get a job not related to your field of interest but just remember it's a means to an end. And with subbing specifically you can decide what days you want to work. I have a degree in psychology and am working at a school too. It's again just a means to an end.

Secondly, I am not an interview coach however I have conducted many interviews for jobs associated with my college. I have written interview prompts with the questions used in interviews, I have looked at applying imployees resumes and referinces, I have conducted many interviews and have been incharge of hiring employees for my college campus ( like I said above). I also have coached a few people for their job interviews and they got the job! But again I want to stress Im not a professional. All that said I can give advice based on my experience.
For the resume I agree with Justins idea, build it up. If there is a specific type of photography you want to specialize in or focus on in your career try and do things in that realm to build up your resume. Make sure the things you do excite you and bring you life. That will help with the feeling of burnout. I would also try and book a few gigs for the soul purpose of networking and having solid references when you apply for jobs you want. Gigs could be small like alot of senor pictures, or baby showers, weddings, birthdays, engagements, just a one day commitment, but an experience that gives you some versatile work for your resume and builds contacts/ references. So again focus on whatever you are passionate about in photography but also slightly dabble in diverse things that will help you build contacts ( you could totally include highschool or college works of yours or contacts you might have if you feel like you want to or need to, but make sure if the contact is older that its very solid. Not some photography teacher you had in highschool that doesn’t remeber you too well, someone who can speak to who you are and your work in a personal context.) If you can work with the same contact a few times that would be really good too. Like lets say Alex is getting married and you do photos for that, then three months later Alex is having a baby so you do the announcement photos for that, and then the baby shower and then the new born pictures. Having a consistant client looks good and also gives you a more solid contact or referince.

For the photographer story… I think their expectations are a little unrealistic just because they went to college for it. You still have to pay your dues. Yes that sometimes include being a second photographer for a small fee, or working 10 hour days (especially for weddings), or some of the other things you mentioned. However, I don’t recommend ever doing completely free photos. Maybe a trade for photos collab with a model. It’s also so so important to try it all out and niche down. I discovered I didn’t like being a wedding photographer. Now I almost exclusively photograph women for portraits with the occasional exception on a case by case basis for family portraits, etc. I’m now able to do this because I also teach yoga & pick up other random jobs while traveling. You have to be humble, teachable and flexible- release those expectations to make space for new opportunities.

The story about buying the house I just want to say. Don’t buy something you can’t afford. Yes you were approved for a mortgage but if it feels like all of your money is going to that home then definitely find something smaller that costs less. Anything can happen in life at any moment. You or your partner could lose a job or god forbid get sick and have to undergo a bunch of expensive treatments and be out of work for a long time. I personally believe it’s a better bet to let the more expensive house go and get yourself a less expensive one and keep more of your savings. Life is SO unpredictable.

In the middle of watching this, I started shaking and felt the need to call my mom, who has been in the ICU with my dad recently.
I happened to call while my dad in the middle of an unusual cardiac event, and my sister answered the phone because my mom had handed it to her. I called just after all 5 or 6 emergency response medical personnel entered the room.
I say all this to say sure Father Knows Something, but sometimes Daughter Knows Something too. I knew something was wrong, and I knew I had to be there.
Thank you guys for making the podcasts you do. They help people more than you know.

Wow story one resonates with me. My son is getting ready to graduate high school and last year we looked into art college, specifically for a BA in Photography. I was so worried about the career sustainability. During our talks with schools something that consistently came up was “What are you interested in photographing?”. He couldn’t answer right away. After some thought he determined he wanted to do Forensic Photography. After talking to more colleges he’s decided that he really wants to do all of the aspects of forensics. He’s now heading to college in the fall to study forensic science with a minor in photography. I’m so excited.

Story 2: My heart hurts for the 9 year old on the strict diet. I went through years of this type of abuse and when I got the chance after leaving that environment, I ate everything. My metabolism was shot at that point and I became morbidly obese. Which of course in my parents eyes, proved they were right the whole time. I’ve done a lot of work on myself and am finally at a good weight. Regardless, I still have a very unhealthy relationship with food, diet culture, exercise, etc. I feel for the nanny who has to watch this go down and feels helpless because it really is a tough situation to be in. I wish you all the best. ❤ Also - I think a work from home job would be a really good option for you. Time your lunch for the after school pickup. Best of luck. 😊

Story 1 (before hearing their perspectives)
This is why it is so important to really consider your major and what it will do for you. There are sooo many degrees that won’t mean anything to those hiring after graduation. My advise for OP would be to not cry over spilt milk and to keep going and use her passion to start building. OP-you gave your bachelors. There are many jobs that will pay you more for that alone, regardless of what the degree is in and what the job entails. Find something bearable that you can work just to make an income and on the side, start building a name for yourself by creating and sharing your work. In photography, you just have to stand out to clients.
May I also suggest starting a business where you teach a photography class yourself. You could do it online. Build the class from the perspective of, “I spent so much time and money and effort to get a bachelors that I found didn’t help me after school. I want to keep you all from making that same mistake by teaching you as much as I can in a reasonable time frame, so that you can go out and start creating and building clientele”. Use your experience to help others from making the same “mistake” and to start a business for yourself!
Everything happens for a reason. I’m sure you are talented and creative and smart and so capable of making this thing a success. Just keep going!

I would like to normalize the idea that your work is not your family. If you need to leave a job you should not feel guilty because you don't owe them anything. You have given your labor and they have given you a paycheck. You don't owe them anything other than your labor and your professionalism. If a business is getting ready to stop anyway there is no reason to feel guilty for taking a different job to support yourself. There's no need to be rude or nasty about it but if someone is angry because you left a job that's on them. As long as you handle yourself in the right way there is no need to feel guilty. They are not your family and you are not friends it's just a job

Story 4: a house is one of the best things for building wealth. BUT it is a gamble. Expenses for upgrades, closing, taxes, maintenance and other things will go wrong. If you can sacrifice your hobbies and lifestyle for this house while you build back Emergencies funds and then you can start your lifestyle again. But if you can’t see yourself working 2 jobs or working to keep up with the escalating cost of a house, dont do it. But being house poor can really make or break your life wealth.

Side note, I’m unsure about the UK, but some places in the US provides the training for positions like this.

I am thankful for this podcast and Jerry. It is nice to see a good dad. I know that Jerry probably drives Morgan nuts sometimes, but you have a loving dad. I know you know that. I have an abusive narcissistic dad. My father in law is a nice man, but he isn't a man of many words. It is nice to have a dad perspective; many of us who have a father like mine. This was a relation I found through group therapy.

Pursue your dream, but mind the financial hardships in such fields as photography or being a social media influencer. In #1, it would be making use of the early work opportunities, even if not ideal, because experience needs to be obtained and connections should be made. Even many talented photographers still need other sources of income to survive. In #5, this means researching the kinds of roles that social media provides, other than the limelight, because it could provide valuable experience and knowledge. Making an actionable plan toward your goal and establishing timelines and "mini goals" not only will motivate you stay on the path toward your dreams, but it does wonders for showing others that you have what it takes to make it happen.

Story 2: I have no experience in being a nanny or how that works. But do you have a contract? Are you able to add to future contracts that if you terminate a contract early because of SA or SH then they have to pay upfront a months or so wage while you search for another position? That way if it does happen again you don’t have to feel unsafe at work because it’s the only way to live? You then have that ability to leave and still have the funds to live for a short period while finding other work? It’s so horrible you have to experience that and have to put that in a contract

To story 4? (About the house :) We were in similar situation :). We were 2 years from relocating, but I was always just looking whats available in that city. I stumbled upon one apartment that caught my eye, and somewhat kept coming to it. We decided that when visiting the city next time, we´ll ask for a tour. We only had 15 mins to watch the flat, because we were on the way to vacations with friends. But something just stuck with us (maybe the view, maybe the two antique armchairs and reading nook.. don´t know. My SIL says it was intuition. We took it. It was overpriced, and the next two years we had to pay mortgage for an "empty apartment" right, plus very high rent in the city we lived at. BUT it was the best choice as in the two following years the prices trippled.
We had to do a loooot of the repairs ourselves after coming from work, and spend like a year living in unfinished construction and every weekend just sanding floors, upholstering stuff, restoring old furniture from Marketplace, or bazars... But it was so worth it. Yes the money were tight. Yes it was exhausting AF. But back when we look at the pics (i managed to make a photobook) we were happy, cause we had a dream (or a goal) and all the sweat and tears (and blood too) was worth it.
And is not like we stopped living right... we also didnt really have any extra savings, or parents to lend us anything. But lets say we didnt go to cinema, or eating out too much (there was no time anyway). But instead went for hikes around.. Also, we got almost all the furniture second hand, bought tools and did some ourselves, also we made floor repair ourselves etc :).
Right now, were like you guys, thinking of getting a house (in our case cottage (small vacation home), and are in same place of yes we can afford mortgage (already checked that with several financial advisors). But know the money might be tight and we might have to do a lot DIY. But in same moment something feels right.. As i say, my SIL says there is something like sixth sense that it was meant to be... So maybe :)
    Good luck guys!

Story 3 - it sounded like the young lawyer left the business a unethically and unprofessionally. Packed up in the middle of the night without notice. Ask questions about that and be careful because this person just screwed his mentor over so he will easily drop OP if it suits him. OPs current boss has been honest, given lots of notice and can give OP a good reference to move onto other law firms with potential career opportunities.
