    What rating would you give someone who's goal is just to finish with the same number of disc they started with?

      I play it this way: If I finish with all the exact discs I started with that is a perfect score. 1000. Never done it. I go down 100 for every disc I lose. I get extra credit, 25 pts, for every disc I find. Ah, but there is a catch. If there is a name/number on found disc then I get zero points since it can and will be returned. The sub-rule to that is person says I can keep it then I get the 25 points. This just happened last week. Finished 825 because person sent me text back: "Oh my word, I gave that disc away almost two years ago. You can keep it." I lost two discs but gained one thus the score.

    As someone who has been playing disc golf for about 2 years now, coming from a ball golf background, and loving this game, I think the PDGA rating system may be its weakest link for new players. First I hate that the formula is a secret. I am a huge fan of transparency in all things that don't involve the military or aliens lifeforms. While I admit the USGA handicap system for golf is not perfect, I know exactly how it works and exactly what it means. How that applies to me is that when I play someone I know exactly how many stokes they have to give me based on the course we are playing and the tee boxes we are using. That makes the game so much more fun and is very helpful if you throw together a group of golfers for a day. Disc golf doesn't have this feature. Having never played in a sanctioned event I have no rating nor do the 5 or 6 people I play with. So how many shots should they give me in a round. That's all I want to know.

    • @ETXB

      If you play the same handful of courses you can figure out your own handicaps by averaging your scores vs par.

    I'm currently at 605 after one event, but, if I calculate right, after my second event last weekend I should be jumping to 650-660-ish. I'm playing again tomorrow, and hope I can deliver a good two rounds with fewer bad shot/disc choices, silly mistakes, and some more consistency based on what some higher rated players have taught me.

    Fumbled my way to 851 from a lowly 768 round rating from my first tournament. My first tournament back from Covid was rough, but I am still trying to get to 870 as my next goal. I just want to play above rating each round at each event. I love your explanation given that player ratings from rounds averaged equates to simple math but the way those round ratings are established are somewhat "magical."

    I've not played any events but play a course with temporary baskets and have beaten everyone I have played and always score under par, and I've been playing for around 3 months, but have a long frisbee history and great throwing. I have been asked my rating or to guess it as I have signed up to my first two events. By what Danny says I would guess I'm between 930 and 950. But this rating system seems so convoluted and abstract, I'm not sure it's even worth thinking about, is it? I don't have a pdga thing anyway and don't really want to sign up to that and pay money. I guess if I stick with the sport maybe it's unavoidable. All very confusing that's for sure

    Events with two rounds on the same layout will sometimes use both rounds in the same pool but other times they will be treated as different pools.

    • @kevinmosteller7279
      @kevinmosteller7279 4 роки тому

      Combining multiple rounds into 1 pool allows for more data points to be used and thus could be more accurate in calculating ratings. However, conditions change throughout a day, in round 2 everyone has already played a round that day so fatigue could set in or players who had a rough first round could correct their mistakes in the second round. It all depends. IMO each round on each layout should be treated as a separate pool regardless of the number of propagators within each pool.

    Thanks for the video, Danny! Complex and secret! Question: Are ratings only valid comparisons within a group/category? For instance a 1000 rated man, a 1000 rated junior and a 1000 rated woman... are not equal disc golfers, right? I imagine a 1000 rated man would likely shoot a lower score than a 1000 rated woman if they played side by side in an FPO tournament (mostly due to physical differences, men throwing further).

    • @33walt
      @33walt 4 роки тому

      No, ratings cross divisions. So a 980 rated woman is about as good as a 980 rated man. There hasn’t been a 1000 rated woman yet, but women do shoot 1000 rated rounds. Paige Pierce is getting pretty close.

    Why are they still only calculated once a month though? Especially with league rounds now being rated. I am about to play in MA3 (recreation) with a guy rated 870, but in his last league rounds this month he's scored 4 rounds 905-930. Ratings update the day after the tournament :/

    • @liiiinder
      @liiiinder 4 роки тому +1

      But if he has a rating of 870 and its over 50 rounds 4 rounds over wont push him up to intermediate.... And the only way to get a rating over is to play over. And thats how you will win your class...
      I just got 904 and have one 980 round and some 950-960.
      But Im with you that its stupid they dont update next day but it wont affect much more then new players who doesnt have a stable rating.

    • @kevinmosteller7279
      @kevinmosteller7279 4 роки тому

      Its feasible to update them every day, but there isnt a need. players typically have a standard deviation between 25 and 40 points. so most players would generally have a range of 50 to 80 points between two rounds in an event. But over the long run the rating will be more predictive of a players skill. Until you have 8+ rounds on a rating its difficult to guess a players skill.

    • @liiiinder
      @liiiinder 4 роки тому

      Long story short, he will be in MA3 until he plays 930-950 consistently. So the only thing you can do is practice! Cant really complain on a 870 rated guy in a 850-900 rating class 😅 Consistency is the biggest difference between us in MA3 and open, not really the length 😋

      You can look up a tournament on that course and try to find a few rounds rated as close to 1000 as you can, average those scores to give you an idea of what a 1000-rated round is, and for every stroke you shoot over that score, take 10 points off your rating.

    • @toddlion6102
      @toddlion6102 4 роки тому

      Courses do not have ratings. Ratings are solely generated by the players competing in a round at the same time. There are too many ever-changing variables to give a course a rating: basket positions being moved, trees being removed, foliage being thick/thin, weather, etc. You can, however, look up an old tournament at that course to get a general idea for what your rating is likely to be.

    This sounds like the most complicated system ever. Why not go with a system similar to ball golf? Strokes above par factoring in basic course difficulty.

      Pros shouldn’t have ratings either. Once you are so good you are just a scratch golfer.

      Because disc golf par is wildly variable. On some courses it's easy to shoot -10. On some other courses it's hard to even shoot par.

      Todd Lion Ball golf courses are the same way. They each have their own individual rating.

      The variety of disc golf courses is far greater than the variety of ball golf courses.

      So you mean combine what players shoot with how difficult the course played....wait that's exactly what they do.

    950 when I’m playing solo rounds, 930 when I’m with other people 🤪

    The rating system kind of needs an overhaul now that there's so many extremely skilled players. 1000-rated used to mean you basically had your name on a disc and now I feel like 1000-rated is every other person I run into on the course.

      Players and scores have gotten better, so it makes sense that ratings go up. 1020 is pretty much the new 1000 of the old days.

      Ratings are every increasing too. Go calculate the average propagator round rating and average propagator player rating for every round. You will find that the avg prop player rating will be 2-5 points lower than the average round rating for the propagators

      @@kevinmosteller7279 "so it makes sense that ratings go up" - I said that mate. I have absolutely no problem with ratings going up as long as players understand where they stack up amongst current top player groups. Players who are below 1000 rated should not be playing in the top pro tour open events, plain and simple. They should have to qualify to get in to those events.

    Just stop! Ratings are just stupid! Do pro ball golfers get a rating every time they play a round? Ahhh no!! This is just stupid!! Disc golf needs to stop this BS! Rollers and ratings..... throw them out the door disc golf world!!!!

      They get ranked for every tournament they play in, yes. PGA has a ranking system very similar to the PDGA. It looks at every event you played in for the last two years, how hard those events were, and where you finished in relation to your competition. That ranking determines what events you get invited to, etc. They are almost identical. Soooo, maybe get your facts straight. Either way DG is not golf, nor should it try to be.
