Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) involves more than septal thickness. Cardiothoracic surgeon Nicholas Smedira, MD, MBA, describes what happens when a patient has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
A team approach is used to understand the anatomy and cause of obstruction. Many surgical approaches are available to individualize the care for the HCM patient to address the obstruction or treat the heart when a patient has HCM without obstruction.
Dr. Smedira is the Surgical Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center. To learn more about him, please visit cle.clinic/3nx...

I've had the diagnosis since 2004. To this day my parents still couldn't tell you what my heart disease is. I strongly suspect if I was to turn up unconscious, they wouldn't even remember to say yes if a nurse or doctor asked them if I had any heart problems. That terrifies me more than the disease itself.

Im in India and my mother has HCM . There's no cures here expect open heart surgery and we do not want to go through with that. What can we do so that she doesn't have to go through surgery and still be cured. This drug is not available here and no doctor suggests a good medicine.

Hi I have this hocm I have s.a.m. with a severe obstruction of left out flow valve of 79% as of 2018 in 2017 I was diagnosed w the art failure diastolic dysfunction with a blood pressure that goes down when my heart rate goes up and at rest it stay at 86 bpm oh my heart 170/115 . when my bpm raise to over 100 my BP is dropping and staying close in numbers . 1 stress tests had to be shut down because I was so drizzle. Boston scientific has a 2015 emblem s-icd diffibulator implanted in me that I believe is recalled never had a shock or an event . I did gene testing and had 3 marks 2 from 1 parent 1 from the other and I am only 43 I have been intolerant to medications and was told in 2017 to get my affairs in order . I was n have done testing in colorado, Oregon n ku in Missouri . I have already out lived my mother n on her side my grandmothers youngest 4 children were dead before 45 yrs old n I would love some insight so many doctors n surgical specialist I have seen had no clue much about this disease or my odds of survival of surgery was 36% chance at best. The doctor who diagnosed my diastolic dysfunction heart failure in 2017 had promise when putting me on a do not work order since I have fainted am very dizzy and short of breath alot badly swelling has been occurring also but that doctor never followed thru w helping get me on disability like he had promised so 5 yrs later still no Medicare only Kansas medicaid at the moment united health care is my insurance company. Can u please tell me my best case option from here or what to do because I fear there are no specialized Dr's in my area who would b able to operate with out the odds being greater of my death than me living thru the operation. I have done my research and have all medical records .
