In this career recap and analysis of why I think he's faced criticism for his prolific pop career, I will outline the case for Antonoff, his music, and well... why we should leave him alone. #jackantonoff #popmusic #videoessay

      SOPHIE is legendary. AG is great too though -- controversial opinion: I sorta wish he put more effort into his PC Music artists and a little less on Charli. Sorta feel once he really started becoming Charli's go-to, we heard less and less from his artists Danny L Harle and GFOTY and Hannah Diamond and Easyfun who were all making interesting music. In fact I sorta think Charli bit a lot of GFOTY's style but that's a comment for another video

      @@Nearraen14 I feel like (and this is speculative AF) Charli and AG genuinely just have this insane friendship similar to how Jack and Taylor do where like they just gravitate back to each other. Charli’s currently working a lot with George Daniel of the 1975 who so happens to be her current BF and I enjoyed their work together on Hot Girl and the Crash Deluxe tracks. AG and Charli did not r work all too much together for Crash beyond 3 tracks, he seemed busy with Namasenda’s underrated Unlimited Ammo so I do think he’s branching out. NFR! and (unpopular opinion but) Chemtrails are my favorite Jack projects (I'm biased cause I'm a Lana stan and a sucker for that dreamy/peaceful/poetic singer-songwriter type of sound they were going for). I love most of his stuff tho (Melodrama, Daddy's Home, his contributions to Lover and folklore, Want You In My Room). It's true that I don't really like Solar Power and Midnights but I'm obviously not gonna pretend that he's the worst producer ever or anything. I agree that Lorde and Taylor (like most artists) are responsible for the way their records sound so...

Back in the 90's and early 00's, most producers were anonymous masterminds with the occasional exception like Pharrell. With social media, a more meta fanbase, and the level of domination, Jack's a goner.

    It's not Jack's fault that most mainstream popstars lack the creativity or curiosity to work with someone who is not the hottest producer in town at the moment. All of them flock to him, so what is he supposed to do? Reject work? If you as an artist are not your own producer (not everybody can be a Kate Bush or Prince), choosing the right producer(s) for your projects can be a talent in its own right. Some of the most interesting artists working today in pop are making fresh music BECAUSE they are adventurous enough to seek out new and interesting producers. Jack, to his credit, has helped the artists he's worked with create their most accomplished albums to date. Now it's up to them to move on if they want to.

      Agreed! Not to plug my fave but Charli works a lot with AG Cook but diversifies her producers quite a bit to stay fresh. I think it’s the artist’s onus to sound fresh, even if they do keep the same producers they need to also introduce outside voices to balance that out. Beyonce’s latest album was a smash bc there wasn’t really one unifying voice she reached out to all sorts of producers (even AG) to craft the record.

      That is exactly why all my criticism regarding Midnights goes to Taylor herself. *Just get a fucking new producer.*
      Some songs in Midnights sound exactly the same, much like samples even, from her previous pop albums Reputation and Lover, and guess who was the producer? Yes, Jack. Just get a new producer, if you like synths and that awesome drop, you can still do that with a new producer and it will sound fresh because it will be naturally different.
      I wonder how many different times the same person can use the same synth and I kinda got my answer in Midnights, it's almost not his fault the songs sound the same as her previous songs, Taylor likes that synth-pop sound, but please, get another producer.
      BUT THEN AGAIN, she did make history with Midnights, so I'm trying to keep my mouth shut because they obviously did something right, but then again... it's really not that wow when you are already deeply familiar with her previous work. It can even be a bit disappointing.

    • @mistraldespair
      @mistraldespair Рік тому +4

      @@stillfangirlingtoday1468 My biggest issue with Midnights isn't even the production honestly. The songwriting is what's truly awful and no amount of studio trickery could have salvaged that. I am no Taylor fan but she impressed me immensely with Folklore and Evermore, so this return to her previous underwhelming attempts at pop do not work for me at all. She seems to not realize her own strengths and weaknesses as an artist and it's incredibly frustrating because she is very talented. Jack isn't completely at fault here. After all, Taylor is credited as a co-producer too. It's like when people give Jack all the credit for how Melodrama sounds when there are videos of Lorde literally producing the songs in the studio.

      @@meghansullivan6812 I have a lot of respect for pop as a genre, I listen to it a lot! My problem with Midnights isn't that it's a pop album or that it's not deep enough (music doesn't need to be deep to be good), I just believe that it's not a very good pop album. The lyrics are clunky and artless, the hooks are weak, and there's barely a memorable song on it. The truth is, I have never been able to enjoy Taylor's pop albums. As a pop artist she is not particularly interesting, but as a singer-songwriter she really shines, which is why I love Folklore, Evermore, and some parts of Red. This is what I meant when I said she doesn't know her own strengths and weaknesses. But I know a lot of people love most of her music, which is fine.

I clearly know what I should expect. And I kinda wish he would do something a bit more daring, maybe a bit more experimental when he works with the aforementioned artists. His most unique productions, imo, are Look What U Made Me Do and Green Lights, both of which came out 5 years ago, so i have a feeling it's time for him to do something like this again to revitalize him as a producer.

    Jack is not the sole producer in Dance Fever, although he has credits in a lot of songs but these are shared. Regarding St Vincent, she might have won a grammy but it is not her most acclaimed record, the conversation about jack was already gaining steam during these times

      Oh true on Dance Fever, he’s only on like 10 of them and shares credit with Welch on most of them. Also, I hadn’t realized Dave Bayley from Glass Animals produced a good chunk. Good for him! I trace the Anti-Antonoff sentiment boiling over with the Wild at Heart/SATNS debacle.
      As for St. Vincent, it’s hard to top self-titled (which also won Best Alternative Album) and Masseduction but Daddy’s Home did pretty well. It’s definitely not her worst album (if such a thing even exists.)

    Solar Power was pretty disappointing when it comes to production, and fans like to blame someone other than their favorite singer... And yes, there's a few bad songs on Reputation and Lover... But that doesn't mean it's his fault, the creative process sometimes makes mistakes during the editing process or some choices can miss the point... But, objectively speaking, the majority of his work is good. Maybe people don't like that he's working with all the female pop singers (rather than sexism, I actually think it's jealousy, that's just a hunch though).

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Рік тому

      Part of the problem with Solar Power mentioned by critics and media outlets, was alleged similarity between production style and song writing of other Jack Antonoff produced songs and albums, including "Wild at Heart" by Lana Del Rey. There is no way that Lorde would known that this song existed and would be released in 2021, just a few months before "Stoned at the Nail Salon", but Jack knew, unless he is tone deaf he must have known they were similar. So Lorde got all the criticism and Jack won Producer of the Year at the Grammys.

    I didn't see the original criticism video but i do think the current producer driven industry isn't ideal. I have no problem with Antanoff's work and I don't think any individual producer is the problem. I loved Norman fucking rockwell, and I loved his work on the folklore/evermore releases (I did prefer the Dessner songs). The problem is that producers do have a very big influence on how the records sound these days and are more often than not cowriters of the song. This is a big deal. So when studios overuse them on many high profile artists the overlap is noticeable. The charts become very homogenized

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Рік тому

      That’s a fair assessment. I don’t quite think it’s the label that dictates an exec producer, perhaps on a newer artist who is starting out. I recall for Pure Heroine, Joel Little carried a hefty hand production wise for Lorde. But true, monopolizing or homogenizing pop is dangerous if we only have the same like 5-10 producers ruling the charts every week. I’d attribute how monolithic production has become even for legacy artists due to a hunger for acclaim through cohesion. Look at Pitchfork and NYT’s scoring mechanisms and you’ll see they tend to look more favorable on singular visioned albums. It’s a hodge podge of factors ranging from commercial to critical viability as well as a need to succeed that drives artists to not explore beyond the fields that reaped them their early harvests. I sound all over the place but thanks for giving me food for thought. It’s always been hard to break in for producers, so it’s kinda ironic Jack went from a stalwart upstart to a monolithic force so fast.

    honestly, the whole discourse about jack antonoff ‘ruining’ pop music is lowkey very misogynistic because it takes agency away from the artists he works with. jack isn’t the puppeteer, he’s not making executive decisions for the pop girls, and he’s not creating these albums by himself, it’s a collaborative effort. solar power was coproduced by both jack AND lorde for example, so the reason the record sounds this way is because of BOTH of their vision for the album.

      @@EljohnMacaranas The similarities between "Wild at Heart"/"Stoned at the Nail Salon" aren't just a backlog in projects. Lorde took her "Stoned at the Nail Salon" demo to Jack in mid 2019, so there was plenty of time to change it if someone even hinted that it might sound like a Lana song. Jack just decided to do a copy/paste.
      There was also the outro on both "Solar Power" and "At The Holiday Party" from St. Vincent sounding very similar. Songs released within a few weeks of each other, so there was no time for the artist to copy. I wonder who came up with the idea for those outros? Another Jack copy/paste.
      Those plagiarism accusations have been incredibly damaging to Lorde's career. Each time someone writes an article about Jack and the women he works with, they inevitably mention the similarities.
      Jack did a huge amount of damage, something that might take 10 years or more for Lorde to overcome. Hopefully there will be no Jack Antonoff on any Lorde album again.

    as a lana fan of 10 years, i learned that the "all of this artist's music sounds the same" argument is full BS. lana was a victim of that too, and her discography is so diverse locals couldn't EVER imagine. "ruining pop" is obvi clickbait but i just don't get how you could do that. even if jack was sh*t and overrated and talentless, there would still be tons of pop girlies who are doing just fine and moving the industry forward (billie, charli xcx, rina sawayama come to mind).
    now, in the lana fandom i often see ppl getting tired of jack considering lana's first 3-ish records were cinematic and produced AF. like a portion wants rick nowels and emile haynie back for sure (idc, i trust ldr's artistic direction).

      @@EljohnMacaranas I mean the music industry’s gonna win every time anyway so Harry winning doesn’t really say much 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t mean that in a way that is spiteful or anything, I just think it’s a bit sad that the corporate level of the music industry controls the direction of how music is sounding
      Yah pop artists can choose the sound they want for the most part, but as can be seen in Taylor’s past, she hasn’t ever had full control on making what she wants
