Same goes to theory... knowledge is obviously helpful and a piece of the pie, but there are a million guys who can play a mode or scale in any key on command, but can't make any memorable music out of it. Like Satch said here, Kirk was part of the foundation of an entire new genre of music. I grew up in that era and many youngsters today don't realize that thrash metal like Metallica's early days didn't even really exist before that, nobody sounded like them. I'd take those credentials over some EVH copycat from the 80s that can play faster or "better".
Guitar is ever evolving. I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Kirk Hammett played guitar at THAT point at a higher level than most! HE and his bandmates were CREATING A NEW GENRE! Do you understand how important Kirks ideas musically were?! Kirk was inventing not copying anyone! I forget though we live in a time where if you want to learn a song you just click on UA-cam and learn it, not EARN IT by long hours of practice and no EASY and CONVIENIENT methods like UA-cam to skip through the theory and all essentials! I was learning in the 80's (and still am) and knew only a few guitarists because things were NOT easily accessible in regards to instruction because noone (parents) didn't have $ for a kid to TRY to learn and because of the lack of EASE and DRIVE put it down a day to a week later to NEVER pick it up again because "it's too hard" and "I don't have anyone to show me"! We live in a time where EVERYONE wants the EASY way and clicks on a Steve Via lesson and learns something of brilliance without knowing the foundation and understanding the value of why he is doing what he is doing! It all comes EASY these days so it is easy to understand why you think you are the cosumate professional and critics! Kirk, THANK YOU for taking the HARD ROAD! Leave Kirk alone critics, because he didn' have the QUICK and EASY way like UA-cam rd nowadays! METTALLICA RULES!!!!!!!
Kirk is absolutely amazing!! I just really wish he wasn’t restricted and held down by Lars and James...it would be awesome if he did a side band/solo project...it would be epic!
Kirk Hammett and joe satriani are two of the biggest influences on my musical life and even my life in general. True legends. Neither of them are “the best” in skill, but they are a couple of the best song/solo writers of all time, not to mention most influential
Has anyone ever thought that maybe Kirk is actually still damn good but just fed up being in Metallica? It seems like he's been bored for YEARS now and they almost never let him get any significant solos or anything in their new music. If I was him I'd feel the same way.
I mean behind the scenes of i think of hardwired to self destruct it looked like lars was telling kirk how to do his solos like he's the lead guitarist not you he needs to do what he thinks is great for the song you know
You know what Id love to see him go solo he'd probably be able to showcase more talent and maybe even some vocals. I don't know just a thought. He'd probably be extra good given more creative space away from Metallica. And I wouldn't doubt Lars controls him either.
@@JakeClark-xw4xz If you really want to talk about someone getting really fucking bad than look no further than Lars. That guy has turned into absolute shit.
That actually is kind of what has happend, Listen Kirk Playing with another artist in gigs and videos, the man still has it!. However after the Black Album Kirk took a way different approach for his solos in Load and Reload been in those albums very experimental solos, then when he wanted to make it back in St Anger they told him NO, he showed he kind of had it in DM and he totally fucked up in the production of Hardwired pretty much not doing his homework and imrpovising most of the solos on the album.
I lived in Berkeley, CA. when Joe was teaching there at a small music store on the corner of Rose St. and MLK. I had a lot of friends who were taking guitar and bass lessons from Joe at that music store in the early 1980's. Pretty much all of the best rock musicians in Berkeley at that time were studying with Joe.
It seems like these super gifted guys, joe Bonamassa, Steve vai, and mr satriani are low on ego and just passionate about improving. They all do great interviews. I think all three are long island guys
Read Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir it’s in there, he mentions ride the lightning and what parts he wrote and he definitely didn’t write the solo, also, the recording you speak of are the ride the lightning demos, if you listen closely it’s not all power chords being played on both strings like Dave does it when he plays the spider riff, it’s just Kirk and James playing power chords sliding up the A string and single notes inbetween on the E

Well to all the Kirk Hammett haters out there.. You are clueless. Music is about feeling and that’s what he conveys. He may not be the most technically proficient but a lot of other guitarists leave me cold. YOU GOT TO FEEL IT!!!
No, YOU are clueless. If music is about feeling, then Kirk's solos make me feel like taking a shit. Almost all professional guitarists use a wah to embellish their solos. Kirk lets the wah BECOME the solo. That's why he's considered a shit guitarist.
Anthony Clure wah wah wah blahblah blah. I've been listening to Metallica since 1983 & he isn't a shit guitarist. If that's your opinion fair enough but Metallica are a great band & Kirk is a part of that greatness. Wah or no wah!

Kirk has attitude and stamina, thats what you need in Metallica. No one can keep up a thousand shows like Kirk, even hes sick he still play like in 1998, garage inc tour. He has a dedication and patience to succes.
I used to think highly of Kirk when I was a teen (what did I know?...), I don't anymore but I won't deny some of his works are classics, frayed ends of sanity solo being my favourite.
Lol come on man. There are a ton of local musicians who I know who can run circles around Kirk. The point is this, Kirk wrote some great music and melodies. He just only uses a few techniques. Drowns out his mistakes with Wah, only uses pull offs for solos now, strictly pentatonics his whole career ect. It doesn't make him bad it makes him limited in his creativity.

Well he's not a solo act. He doesn't write everything. The songs could be so good that an average or lame solo neither ruins not elevates it. He does have a great gig no doubt, and is a cool dude on top of it (personality wise).
I think he's a great guitarist and created some of the best solo's for the band that people can remember even hum during concert.....people are always shitting on him just to join the bandwagon of shit people.
I probably should say Hammett made me ask my old man for a BC Rich Warlock for $475 in 1988 because of Kirk. I was a big fan of EVH and Slash but Kirk's playing on Master of Puppets was some crazy stuff. I also know that Hammett is humble and doesnt know everything. Anyone here that doesnt like Kirk, no problems here. As I am not a fan of major acts like Kiss, Elvis, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, etc. To each his own.

Man if only we could get Joe, Steve and kirk to tour together
Steve and Joe are virtuoso guitarists Kirk is lead player with kick ass solos to songs at best I'm pretty sure
We've already had Joe, Steve, and John Petrucci...
@@GuitarGuy057 But Satriani didn’t give JP lessons.
@@RichardGarcia93
Kirk is not the greatest example of Satriani's teaching. He'd just bring it down
@@GuitarGuy057 Yeah, I was just saying that OP wishes that the teacher and the students could play together on stage someday.
What could be more happier moment for teacher seeing his kid having a wonderful career.💙🤘
For those about to bash on Kirk, what great things have you accomplished in life?
They never accomplished anything like his guitar playing on Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Garage Days Re-Revisited etc.
Pretty sure 99.999% of the haters don't have $200M in the bank. Much less played anywhere bigger than their local bar.
Kirk is good, but I don't think he has the natural musical ability to absorb what Steve is capable of teaching him
Not being Kirk Hammett.
So you're saying that someone is immune from jokes and criticism unless the person is successful? Grow up
Joe Satriani it's a really Master piece him self!! A very nice guy and amazing guitar hero!!...he always do the most cool interviews...love You Joe!!
Kirk is absolutely amazing!! I just really wish he wasn’t restricted and held down by Lars and James...it would be awesome if he did a side band/solo project...it would be epic!
Your wish is finally coming true😀his solo project is releasing on April 23 2022
Every pro guitarist has a solo album except kirk Hammet !!
his solo album is really well composed. surprised after lux and screeaming suicide came out and it's back to pentatonic wah
@@Blannibal311 I agree truly
Sir Joe is such an amazing guitarist. And Steve Vai. And Kirk
It seems like these super gifted guys, joe Bonamassa, Steve vai, and mr satriani are low on ego and just passionate about improving. They all do great interviews. I think all three are long island guys
Friendly reminder that Kirk Hammett wrote the solo for Ride The Lightning and The Shortest Straw.
Friendly reminder that Kirk didn't write the solo for Ride the Lightning... it was Mustaine, check it out
Triginta Tres lol no it wasn’t
@@garywilliams1858 yes it was..and also there are a couple of recordings where he plays it with them..
Triginta Tres it wasn’t mate, it’s not Mustaines playing style at all. He only wrote the spider riff and the verse riff
I 1st herd of Sach, then bought Surfing With The Alien in 1989, when I was at Fort Gordon GA, for US Army I.E.T. (Initial Entry Training, which is our occupational training, right after Basic Training)
I put the cassette in, pressed play, & my gaw'damn jaw dropped. Been a Sach fan ever since!
Kirk was taught by absolute guitar genius let's leave it at that
Everyone loves Joe. The coolest guy in the world!
The anonymous Guitar Gods of the Internet...
Being everywhere and nowhere, at once. They created all we hear and are perfect, all knowing and mysterious. It would literally kill us to hear them shred. They shall pass judgment on every guitar player from their seat in the interwebs. For they are jealous Guitar Gods.
Such a great teacher, drummer, guitar player and also a good a actor!
kirk very humble...we are not a machine to playing perfect..
I used to be heavy into Satriani and Vai. Still love um.
Eddie Van Halen started on drums too... I sense a trend here!
Shit I started with guitar, and not really leaning towards greatness, does that mean I should be a drummer? xD
I wanted to play drum but It was too expensive so they bought me a 50 dollars peavey lol
Slash started as a bassist
Shit this isn't very comforting /cry.
I really want to play guitar, not turn myself to the dark side ahahaha.
Lar from Primus, Alex Skolnik of testament, David Bryson of Counting Crows, Charlie Hunter (amazing jazz guy) and Kevin Cadogan of Third Eye Blind were also Satch's students.
Seems like a nice guy and I like his boots.
satch is an awesome song writer...
those magnificent themes etch themselves
into your brain...
Well to all the Kirk Hammett haters out there.. You are clueless. Music is about feeling and that’s what he conveys. He may not be the most technically proficient but a lot of other guitarists leave me cold. YOU GOT TO FEEL IT!!!
*pentatonic blues scale*
Nick Costa why bother to reply with that. You're right/has no feeling..contradiction Nick!
Brad Putnam . Aye!
Back when cassettes were still around I used to trade my deck out with flying in a blue dream and Texas flood and back in black. Them and Hendrix completely explains my approach to the guitar as a player born in the mid seventies
Insert “Let me fit in the with the cool kids and make fun of Kirk Hammett” Comment
Wha??
they don't have an opinion, so they repeat what the tr0s comment about some bands in every vid, it's best to ignore them, they're prob angry bad guitar players
lmao yeah and his own kids are among them
D Ceased hahaha no dude I’m afraid you’re wrong. There were loads of Kirk hate comments when I posted that. Also, you must be new to UA-cam if you think there’s really no Kirk-hate comments out there.
@D Ceased any metallica video you can see some idiots saying shit about kirk, but yeah, the best thing is to show support to kirk and forget these people
It is always interesting to hear about Kirk Hammett.
Nobody in the comment section can outplay Kirk on the guitar.
Period
Lol come on man. There are a ton of local musicians who I know who can run circles around Kirk.
The point is this, Kirk wrote some great music and melodies. He just only uses a few techniques.
Drowns out his mistakes with Wah, only uses pull offs for solos now, strictly pentatonics his whole career ect. It doesn't make him bad it makes him limited in his creativity.
no they just cry like most of the "new wave of crap with no feeling"
Hold my beer
3:30 I MANY times wish i had got into certain bands long before i did. but i dont think i would have fallen in love with them if i did. so i understand having to wait to understand something to appreciate something like that. but still wish i had more time enjoying whatever band.
Joe Satriani: And that was the time when I learned what a good student will be like, and what the kid that looks at the window the whole lesson will be like.
He's the PhD of guitar. So intimidating with all that knowledge.
just here laughing with all the "pro guitarists" bashing Kirk...hmmm how many of you are part of one of the greatest metal bands ever?how may of you play like 200 lives a year touring the world?
how many of you play consistent music for more than 20 years? how many of you have written songs with millions of views??have you been a member of an internation band? you think a "bad" guitarist can accomplish all that? grow up and plzz learn the word respect ... you are all too young
Well he's not a solo act. He doesn't write everything. The songs could be so good that an average or lame solo neither ruins not elevates it. He does have a great gig no doubt, and is a cool dude on top of it (personality wise).
Its cool that Steve Vai the student, have now become the master 👌
*insert Kirk Hammett joke*
its the notes that are fuckin between
It's obvious he was chosen by Metallica because of his guitar abilities and not because he's half ethnically "politically correct".
St. Anger
I think he's a great guitarist and created some of the best solo's for the band that people can remember even hum during concert.....people are always shitting on him just to join the bandwagon of shit people.
@@mdub2000 boi jumping on the bandwagon is liking one of the most successful bands of all time because everyone else does, like metallica.
that last sentence by Joe , emotional
Kirk drew from Cliff's creativity. Who know's what heights Kirk would have obtained if his brother in music was alive today. CLIFF EM ALL 🤘
Good job with Steve.
Kirk is great, people compare him to other players which is kind of stupid. Unique playing is what guitar is all about
exactly . kirk is generic
I taught myself how to shred, and after a year i can shred, this was 14 years ago.

After a year you’re not shredding very well, and a pat on the back is only a little higher than a kick in the ass

Steve's The Audience Is Listening, the wah steals the show, maybe the best use of a wah pedal ever.
I love Kirk Hammett.. He takes those songs to a new place with his guitar \\m//
Super nice guy Joe Satriani.
My 3 favorite Guitars players are Satriani, Vai and Vito Bratta
Great choice, Vito Bratta is one of my favorite guitarist too, love these three playing guitar.

People please don’t talk shit about Kirk Hammett the ride the Lightning solo is the reason why solos sounds cool now
it doesnt matter how good or bad the players are as long as the song is good i dont care a SHIT
Amen to that. I'm glad I'm such a pleb, blessed with ignorance and tone deafness. So I can enjoy any song in its entirety instead of noticing details here and there. My life is fun.
Dude can teach you something and not even touch the guitar truly an inspiration
Best guitarist of all time.
I'll second that
Two words dimebag Darrell
I agree dime was one if the greatest but I put Satch above him only for the reason that he has a laundry list of giants that he has taught how to play.
@@JacksonThornhill Dimebag would've wished that Satriani taught him.
Satriani is not only the best guitarist of all time, he also taught other guitarists who are among the best of all time, i.e Steve Vai, who is also much better than Dimebag.
@@Tommy.McLean I think satriani and via are the biggest inspiration for most guitarists including dimebag but, I think in term of skill dimebag takes the cake at least in my opinion
God bless you guys. Mad Respect Joe. God bless you. Why is this new News. This way old. God bless you
U know ur a badass when ur teaching Steve Vai
He really is awesome. I didn’t appreciate him enough when I was a kid. I thought that liking Jimmy Page and David Gilmore meant I couldn’t like Joe Satriani am Steve Vai. Now I realize how much o was missing out.
I came here to put down Kirk. But after reading all the comments I kind of feel sorry for him.
Why? Dude played some of the most epic solos in metal man. His playing on ride the lightning and master is awesome
The solos are on the first four albums are fantastic. He was winning "best guitarist" polls for a reason.
Kirk doesn't deserve all the shit as a person. He's the nicest guy. But he just doesn't have it anymore. - People just need to stop bitching about it. This shit has lasted for YEARS. It's almost like indirect bullying. - He couldn't go onto the internet (to just read) once, because he'd just be torn apart at every turn.
He brought it all on himself.
Listening to some of his solos .great talent
We know which of the two listened to his lessons more. Not Kirk.
