I have actually been to that building and it does get extremely crowded on high holidays. The students wanted to fulfill the Rebbe's orders and dug the tunnels without permission. I think these tunnels might be part of a larger disclosure process. Either way it seems like Casey Neistat’s NYC sidewalk hole video inspired people to be much more interested in what’s underground in NYC. The building itself is in dispute between two sects and the more fringe group was the ones who did this. In their mind the rabbi who used to run the property was the messiah and they claim that he had intended on doing this expansion. So in their minds the messiah had wanted it expanded so they have to expand it. The problem is they don’t own the building and have a history of not wanting to be apart of the surrounding area/government. And thought they could get away with it. Once the other sect who has claim to the building realized what they were doing they called in the authorities and then you have what we see on these crazy videos. TLDR: fringe group thought they could do major construction without permits, and without having full custody of the building. They got caught and shit hit the fan. This wasn’t a vast network of tunnels or some smuggling super highway their goal was to make a room bigger and they were stupid.

I worked for the NYC Department of Buildings for 5 years. a simple concrete pour is NOT how you fix these things. It's not the first time they've found tunnels under buildings in NYC and had to do work to fix. Not to mention, the standard way to fill holes like these is to pour dirt and rocks in THEN pour concrete on top. Dirt and rocks are cheaper than concrete. Process usually takes a few weeks to a few months. LOTS of red tape in NYC. Try again.

Apparently, it was built by several teenagers. When the management discovered it they called security to stop it the and hired civil engineer to check the building. Than the management tried to seal it with cement, but few teenager's were trying to stop them and went into the tunnel. This is the all story.

If the tunnels were built during COVID so they could access the Chabad during lockdown, as the news reports, there would be no reason for them to get in such a tizzy about the city sealing them up currently.

There are very normal explanations (not necessarily reasonable lol), they had the goal of expanding the prayer room to the neighboring building that they own. The building itself is in dispute between two sects and the more fringe group was the ones who did this. In their mind the rabbi who used to run the property was the messiah and they claim that he had intended on doing this expansion. So in their minds the messiah had wanted it expanded so they have to expand it. The problem is they don’t own the building and have a history of not wanting to be apart of the surrounding area/government. And thought they could get away with it. Once the other sect who has claim to the building realized what they were doing they called in the authorities and then you have what we see on these crazy videos.
TLDR: fringe group thought they could do major construction without permits, and without having full custody of the building. They got caught and shit hit the fan.
This wasn’t a vast network of tunnels or some smuggling super highway their goal was to make a room bigger and they were stupid.

filling the open pocket of tunnel with concrete is the reinforcement? if the tunnel is under the ground, then what was removed was dirt and rock, dirt and rock do not have rebar in them, so why would you add rebar to the concrete? the entire point of putting concrete in there is literally just to fill the hole with something solid, the building does not depend on this concrete so obviously they aren't going to add more material increasing costs

I worked for the NYC Department of Buildings for 5 years. a simple concrete pour is NOT how you fix these things. It's not the first time they've found tunnels under buildings in NYC and had to do work to fix. Not to mention, the standard way to fill holes like these is to pour dirt and rocks in THEN pour concrete on top. Dirt and rocks are cheaper than concrete. Process usually takes a few weeks to a few months. LOTS of red tape in NYC.

Apparently, it was built by several teenagers. When the management discovered it they called security to stop it the and hired civil engineer to check the building. Than the management tried to seal it with cement, but few teenager's were trying to stop them and went into the tunnel. This is the all story.
