Can you teach us how to calculate differential indexing ,for example calculate the indexing and change gears for the following divisions:53,59,101,and 175!Thank you so much!

Do you have a universal indexing head or plain indexing head
Also is it 40 to 1 or is it 120 to 1

What hardware and gears do you have for external set ups

just discovered your channel, what to say other than a BIG thank you, I'm not in the field but I am very curious of everything and maybe in the future I would like to have some machinery.
    Very clear explanations
    Thank you indeed

I want to start by saying I’m not trying to put anyone down, but I have to say this is 100% why the trade I absolutely love is dying this is the shit they are still teaching in trade school for machinist, the problem with this is where we are from there might be one or two shops that do not have cnc machines. Those shops as a general machinist top paid guy you might be lucky to break 25 a hour and yes back in the late 70s early 80s that was a great wage but now in 2021 that is a wage you can barely live on. This is why the younger generation is not going into this trade. Now that being said if they really knew what this trade could offer them you can bet some of these kids now a days would 100% go into general machinist trade. You get into a top paying aerospace shop as a programmer operator you could make 75k a year to start. If you work your way up the company and get onto there 5 axis equipment as a programmer operator and your making 90-95k a year and in 2021 that is a rate you can live on... The problem with teaching kids for 3 years how to operator equipment like that gets them nowhere now a days. Honestly you would be lucky to be a button pusher at a shop after a 3 year apprenticeship the apprenticeship should be 1 year on safety, manual mill (basics feeds and speeds drilling etc) lathe and other manual equipment then the last 2 years should be how to program with mastercam and how to make complex parts with multiple setups on cnc equipment... Ray I’m not trying to bash on you, you are amazing at what you do and are a great teacher I had you years ago as a substitute teacher and I got along great, what makes me mad is that the apprenticeship has not changed in 30 years but the trade has. Anyways great video great explanation on the indexing head but in my eyes in a modern day shop all that’s good for is a paper weight to hold down the stack of prints I have to program, set up and run through on the cnc machines.

      Hi Josh
I agree with you the curriculum does need to be upgraded
The reason why I made the indexing head simulator is because I’m taking the actual use of the indexing head out of the shop and bringing it into the classroom
Indexing head is still in the curriculum and must be covered
We are switching over to using The CNC to cut the year quadrant project
And on the opposite side of the coin some people are going to say that we’re teaching them how to be button pushers that is not what’s going to happen they still need to do their own set up and we will also be writing the programs as well
Josh it’s good to hear from you thank you for commenting and watching
Honest straightforward comments are extremely important keep them coming

Still got a thumbs up from me though Ray it just makes me mad that for the last 2.5 years we have had 2 kids come through that actually want to do this trade where I work. And the 2 of them will probably have to quit to move up and actually learn something because there is no one out there that want to do what there doing so we can move them up through the company!

      Hi Josh
If these guys are going to school with me have them seek me out and I can give them some advice that might help them
      I cannot publicly comment

OK now I need some extra help, I have to dial off 31.72 ° on a 40:1 dividing head with a 49 hole plate. I figured out that 31.72° = 31°43'12" which then equals 1903.2'. I rounded it down to 1903' and figured 540 goes into 1903 (3)times with a remainder of 283. should I just round it down to 1900 and then do 190/54 with a remainder of 28?

if i have 38 holes index and making 95 divisions, will i get that accurately or should i switch to plate #1 for accurate cutting?
