The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, under Executive Director Joshua LaBaer, was uniquely engineered to employ transdisciplinary approaches to solving global problems. What does this mean? Instead of walling off discovery into silos and schools that guard knowledge rather than share it, ASU student researchers and faculty work together across centers and teams within the greater ASU ecosystem and the world to collaboratively achieve results with measurable global impact.
This structure allowed the Biodesign Institute to meet the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with speed and agility, filling the urgent need for testing, vaccinations and expert guidance.
The Institute’s work falls into three broad categories: health, sustainability and security. That means developing personalized medicine and diagnostics to enable earlier detection of disease, ensuring access to safe drinking water and clean air, developing technologies to rapidly assess radiation absorption in individuals and much more.
