Possibly the most underrated Gold Cup winner, beating possibly the most underrated Grand National winner. Rough Quest never comes up when great National winners are discussed, but how many National winners take form like this into Aintree, beaten 4 lengths second in the Gold Cup. And that was a tremendous performance by the winner.
Thanks++ fro this. Imperial call was electric, reminded me of Pendil. But he took a bad fall during his next race; that November, and was never quite same horse afterwards
One Man ended up winning the champion chase over 2 miles. He didn't like the hill in the gold cup like so many others. The whole Imperial Call story was a fairytale with what seemed like the whole of his village coming over for the race.
Despite Master Oats being absent to defend his title it was a good field. Poor One Man never got the gold cup trip despite winning at this distance before.
I could never understand why St Mellion Fairway was declared for this race as a novice (a non-runner on the day). He'd only ran three times over fences winning twice at Lingfield but fell when well behind Mr Mulligan in the Reynoldstown Chase.

This was an amazing performance by imperial call , he was cruising all the way
Rough Quest did the opposite to Garrison Savannah. Runner up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup but first place in the Aintree Grand National.

Imperial Call became the first Irish trained winner since Dawn Run memorably a decade earlier.

Backed imperial call a very good horse on his day
Just Brilliant. trained by Fergie Sutherland

RIP Imperial Call
Was the last horse to complete the Irish Gold Cup/Cheltenham Gold Cup double before Sizing John emulated it twenty one years later.

One Man was meant to have bled during the race.
Don't think a horse as ever travelled as good through a good cup than imperial call did that day .
Poor Barron bank
Piss poor renewal
You wouldn't know what a good race is if it slapped you in the forehead...
