JJ under Kevin O will thrive and has big game experience already at college level. Id think rolling with JJ and keeping Dan Jones as the veteran backup is the way to go. This way.the vikings can spend alot on buffing up their O line and defensive holes.
Was JJ a guy you “won because of” in college? No he wasn’t. Michigan ran the ball 35 times a game and had the best defense in the nation, along with a proven qb guru head coach. If they let go of Sam this head coach will be either drafting a new qb or fired in 2 years
I'd rather go with JJ and not overpay for Sam vs. re-signing him with the franchise tag and handcuffing the rest of the squad because we can't fix the O-Line, aging secondary, etc. It doesn't matter whether you die before the playoffs or in the playoffs, you're still dead if you're not the last team standing in February.
I gurrantee JJ McCarthy will not go 3-14 so you don’t have to worry about that 😂. He will be good. He got KOC as his coach and will be throwing to Jefferson and Addison. He will be in Quarterback paradise.

Lots of college guys look like winners when they're surrounded by elite talent on both sides of the ball. I'm not saying JJ McCarthy won't be good, or even a star. The point is, nobody knows. He didn't throw all that much or all that great in college. His stock went up afer he looked good at the underwear Olympics with no defense in sight, and he looked good in the preseason when he was playing against a lot of nobodies. He may have great leadeship skills and turn out to be a Brock Purdy-type type or even better. Or, he may end up just another over-hyped NFL reach. I'm not saying Vikings fans shouldn't prefer him to be the next guy, but there sure seems to be a lot of them acting like he's a guaranteed star, when in fact he's shown virtually nothing in a real NFL game. Not yet, anyway.
If I’m GM (im a Vikings fan), I’m sorry but this league is too competitive and especially with this team, who has never won a championship, and is/has been waiting since its inception, I cannot bring him back. Especially in a ~100m cap hit to the team. At the end of the day in my eyes it’s NO GOOD what you do in the regular season if you CANT do it in the playoffs. Simple as that. What matters, and this is what’s obvious to me, is what you can do in the postseason, and Sam has shown he CANNOT do it in big moments. Look at the season Mahomes has had for example. It’s been a very lackluster regular season for him. Yet, his team is in the playoffs and when he’s in the postseason he can win ANY game and all of his teammates, coaches, analysts, fans know it and that’s why the Chiefs are still the favorites to win it all even after the mid-level season Mahomes has had until now. It doesn’t matter, it’s different when the games mean the most for him, he can win them all. And that’s what the Vikings need to find.
And JJ is the answer? What made him successful at Michigan was not having to throw more than 15-20 a game. Sam will be given a multi year deal and JJ will be traded for a 2nd round pick
Herbert had 4 INTs, bad throws, sacked a lot, etc., yet no talk of swapping him out. Pressure can do in most QBs, only the top 5-6 can handle players flying through the line at them. I thought after the DET game that the MIN coaches would have solutions, like OL protection schemes if it happened again, quick hitting slant routes, etc. I also felt Charger coaches didn't do Herbert any favors. That said, Darnold needs to either get more mobile or throw the ball to a check down/or out of bounds a lot better. Sam showed he can be good but has never shown he can be great. I have no issue with MIN switching to JJ, he's the future and Darnold can only take you so far. Hurts also looked pedestrian and held the ball a ton but Eagles D shut down GB, MIN D didn't help the cause either. Whatever happens, Darnold will get a starting gig somewhere, definitely better than the likes of Levis and all the QBs the giants rolled out (though he should not go to the giants... ). How about Sam to the Raiders? They have some good pieces in place.
I’m Laughing MAO. So many have decided in their fantasy world that JJ McCarthy, who hasn’t thrown a single pass in an NFL game, nor played in a playoff game, is going to be the savior of the Vikings. Yet, Sam Darnold, who led the Vikings to a 14-win season (but had two post-season games where his performance suffered partially because the offensive line could not withstand the pressure coming from two stifling defenses) is a bust. (Bear in mind, Justin Herbert, a seasoned vet, threw 4 interceptions in the Chargers’ playoff game against the Texans.) Go ahead and encourage the Vikings to make a decision based upon a fantasy you''ve created in you head that is not grounded in reality. Priceless.
As a Vikings fan, I’m so tired of settling with middle aged (in NFL years) NFL free agent QBs who suck on bigger stages. With the exception of Bridgewater who had a horrific knee injury, we haven’t had a young rookie/borderline rookie take the reins of this organization since Daunte Culpepper. It’s about time we finally have a young guy take over this offense. Most rookies/young guys become busts and flat on their face because they’re entering a horrible situation with a bad coach/bad team. McCarthy has everything he needs to be successful as a young quarterback in the league with a head coach who has tremendous ability of developing guys, and weapons to support him.
