JJ under Kevin O will thrive and has big game experience already at college level.
Id think rolling with JJ and keeping Dan Jones as the veteran backup is the way to go. This way.the vikings can spend alot on buffing up their O line and defensive holes.

Was JJ a guy you “won because of” in college? No he wasn’t. Michigan ran the ball 35 times a game and had the best defense in the nation, along with a proven qb guru head coach.
If they let go of Sam this head coach will be either drafting a new qb or fired in 2 years

Lots of college guys look like winners when they're surrounded by elite talent on both sides of the ball. I'm not saying JJ McCarthy won't be good, or even a star. The point is, nobody knows. He didn't throw all that much or all that great in college. His stock went up afer he looked good at the underwear Olympics with no defense in sight, and he looked good in the preseason when he was playing against a lot of nobodies. He may have great leadeship skills and turn out to be a Brock Purdy-type type or even better. Or, he may end up just another over-hyped NFL reach. I'm not saying Vikings fans shouldn't prefer him to be the next guy, but there sure seems to be a lot of them acting like he's a guaranteed star, when in fact he's shown virtually nothing in a real NFL game. Not yet, anyway.

If I’m GM (im a Vikings fan), I’m sorry but this league is too competitive and especially with this team, who has never won a championship, and is/has been waiting since its inception, I cannot bring him back. Especially in a ~100m cap hit to the team. At the end of the day in my eyes it’s NO GOOD what you do in the regular season if you CANT do it in the playoffs. Simple as that. What matters, and this is what’s obvious to me, is what you can do in the postseason, and Sam has shown he CANNOT do it in big moments.
Look at the season Mahomes has had for example. It’s been a very lackluster regular season for him. Yet, his team is in the playoffs and when he’s in the postseason he can win ANY game and all of his teammates, coaches, analysts, fans know it and that’s why the Chiefs are still the favorites to win it all even after the mid-level season Mahomes has had until now. It doesn’t matter, it’s different when the games mean the most for him, he can win them all. And that’s what the Vikings need to find.

    • @AB-nv7bz

Herbert had 4 INTs, bad throws, sacked a lot, etc., yet no talk of swapping him out. Pressure can do in most QBs, only the top 5-6 can handle players flying through the line at them. I thought after the DET game that the MIN coaches would have solutions, like OL protection schemes if it happened again, quick hitting slant routes, etc. I also felt Charger coaches didn't do Herbert any favors. That said, Darnold needs to either get more mobile or throw the ball to a check down/or out of bounds a lot better. Sam showed he can be good but has never shown he can be great. I have no issue with MIN switching to JJ, he's the future and Darnold can only take you so far. Hurts also looked pedestrian and held the ball a ton but Eagles D shut down GB, MIN D didn't help the cause either. Whatever happens, Darnold will get a starting gig somewhere, definitely better than the likes of Levis and all the QBs the giants rolled out (though he should not go to the giants... ). How about Sam to the Raiders? They have some good pieces in place.

I’m Laughing MAO. So many have decided in their fantasy world that JJ McCarthy, who hasn’t thrown a single pass in an NFL game, nor played in a playoff game, is going to be the savior of the Vikings. Yet, Sam Darnold, who led the Vikings to a 14-win season (but had two post-season games where his performance suffered partially because the offensive line could not withstand the pressure coming from two stifling defenses) is a bust.
(Bear in mind, Justin Herbert, a seasoned vet, threw 4 interceptions in the Chargers’ playoff game against the Texans.)
Go ahead and encourage the Vikings to make a decision based upon a fantasy you''ve created in you head that is not grounded in reality. Priceless.

As a Vikings fan, I’m so tired of settling with middle aged (in NFL years) NFL free agent QBs who suck on bigger stages. With the exception of Bridgewater who had a horrific knee injury, we haven’t had a young rookie/borderline rookie take the reins of this organization since Daunte Culpepper. It’s about time we finally have a young guy take over this offense. Most rookies/young guys become busts and flat on their face because they’re entering a horrible situation with a bad coach/bad team. McCarthy has everything he needs to be successful as a young quarterback in the league with a head coach who has tremendous ability of developing guys, and weapons to support him.

Darnold by far. He won fourteen games in his first starting year with us! Why Vikings fans are so unfair to Darnold while they were almost ridiculously patient with Kirk “One career playoff win” Cousins is beyond me! JJ would just get injured again and is unproven in the pro’s.

What SHOULD they do? Oh I dunno, maybe for once shore up the offensive line!!! Doesn't matter who your QB is, running for their life will result in poor play period.
Watched highlights of Moss and MIN absolutely wasted the first few years of his career with a QB carousel and instability at the coaching level. After losing no wonder dude wanted out. They're doing the same thing with Jetts, they go JJ and that's three different starting QBs since he got drafted. He seemed frustrated when saying he'll be excited for new teammates etc. I'm glad he got paid, but deep down if MIN can't get to a SB he's going to bounce. Vikings need to fix their playoff/SB losing culture if they want to keep guys around. KOC also has a ton of learning to do, specifically in game adjustments. MIN was outcoached badly against the Rams.
It's just sad when you talk to your friends and family and not one of them was surprised that MIN lost in the first round......again.

Laura's point is the most salient. If Sam already knew that he was the franchise QB or at least was returning, I think that he would have played much better. He would have been more decisive, less second guessing himself, and less afraid to make a mistake. He made it known early on that he wanted to stick with the Vikings franchise - that's added pressure to take into your 1st playoff start.

What people forget is that even the best quarterbacks of the present and throughout history lost at least their first playoff game before becoming successful. That's a poor reason to right someone off that doesn't align with reality. Also the Vikings won because of Sam many times down the stretch in high pressure situations, in high pressure games on the road. I know it's the talking heads' job to be reactionary and they don't intimately know the team, but they could at least try to be logical. My guess is that the last couple losses exposed the Vikings' other needs to such an extent that they can't realistically afford Sam.

    • @ahastar1141

People look at the last 2 games, but there were a lot of games during the regular season leading up to the last 2 games where darnold came up clutch. Arizona, seattle on the road, and Greenbay were all big games down the stretch he needed to show up and he did, but playoff football hits different. There are a number of quarterbacks the media has always spoken highly of, that also laid eggs this year in the playoffs ( love, herbert, even goff). Playoff games are tough, and even tougher if you have never been there before. Fact of the matter, is darnold proved this year he could play. The next step for him will be winning a playoff game.

I cant blame the vikings defense too much. They kept them in the last 2 games, but they got gassed and when your offense is going 3 and out and the defense is out there for 10+ play drives, it wears on your defense.
