Totally amazing texture. It reminds me of velvet. The extra color adds a lot of dimension. I'm looking forward to ordering a large metal print of this beauty.

Thank you Nikita. This is so helpful. I really appreciate you showing the brush you use and your very close-up photography.
Obviously it takes a tremendous amount of patience and skill to paint with such detail but the result is so worth it! Your painting is really coming to life; amazing job. The eye, in particular is incredibly lifelike. Thank you for sharing your talent and techniques :)
p.s. I'm from MN and the loon is our state bird. I have lived here all my life and have seen countless varieties of birds but never a loon. They are seldom seen in mid-MN but often heard. The last of our snow will be melting this week so it won't be long before we hear the distinctive "call of the loon" .

You're most welcome! The eye was mostly painted with Michael Harding Cad Red Deep and Phthalo Blue Lake, with a little Foundation White and Ivory Black for highlights and shadows. I didn't know Loons are Minnesota's state bird, thank you for sharing.

My second comment is a question: Was your underlayer completely dry before you went in with the nubby feathers? And are you using straight oil paint?
    Thanks :)

Yes, the underlayer was completely dry when I started the nubby feathers and I'm using straight undiluted oil paint.
