One of the most underrated March Madness games of all time imo, this game was so nerve-racking and intense. Both teams played so well and it was a blast
Thank you for posting. I've been checking UA-cam weekly for this game, since last season, and it's finally. up. What a great game between two of the most storied college programs. Rock Chalk!
I cheered for Kansas and traveled to the Sweet 16/Elite 8 this year. At first my teammates and I were bummed that we drew Omaha over the other destinations (L.A., Boston, Atlanta), but it was a blast and a great little city. And the games weren't half bad either! ;)
Rewatching this, even though I knew it didn’t go in, I still jumped out of my seat for that Grayson shot, trying to will it in. Then i clutches my heart when that blocking call was made.
“They better make a call before its last call.” Bill Raftery is a gem and one of the best play by play guys ever. In my opinion he’s the best in the college game. “The kiss,” “There’s nothing like a little Remy late in the evening” and “Send it in Jerome” are just a few more examples of this guys wit and charm. He’s very underrated and he adds to every game he calls without overdoing it. On a side note this game is a great milestone for Self. Before the game all reporters are asking him why he doesn’t go to more Final Fours and he doesn’t duck it. He agrees, states he should go to more, and tells them he’s getting ready to. It’s one of the best pregame interviews ever. Out coaches coach K getting there. The play call with 2:11 left in regulation is Bill Self at his finest. “I did what you told me coach,” at the 1:59 mark with Allen shooting free throws is Raftery at his
starting to really ball now in Portland. but I do agree he could have flourished with the Zion-Barrett-Reddish-Tre Jones group. K would have found shots for him.
These teams have played 6 times in the NCAA tournament ('86, '88, '91, '00, '03, '18). Each team has won 3 times and most incredibly, there is a ONE point separation in the total combined scores of the games. Duke has scored 417 points and Kansas 416 in the six games. Duke has won theirs by 4, 7, and 5 points while Kansas has won by 7, 4 and 4.
Guard play was the determinant in this game. Duke (like this year’s team) was lauded for its interior talent/athleticism (in addition to Grayson Allen returning) while Kansas had playmakers in the backcourt and guys who were fundamental in their approach. Many people were fixated on Duke’s size upfront but I figured that guard play was going to factor in this game.
Really wish Trent had stayed at least another year at Duke. Really liked that kid and he could have been a scary player. Duval should have stayed too. He wasn't NBA ready, obviously. Bagley and Carter were special though. Loved watching them play.
Clear turning point in OT was the blocking call. That call was a two-point swing, ended Wendell's college career, and was a momentum killer for us. Obviously, we should've overcome it but just shows how much luck is needed to win a national championship
Basket interference. In a nutshell, if a shot goes up, a different offense player can't touch or influence it until it's falling off the rim. It probably wasn't an actual shot (I honestly can't tell if he was lobbing it or shooting it) but it was close enough to the rim to at least make the refs think it was a shot
Jaime de Espana ......pull up a full game from the 2015, 16, 17 ncaa tournament and youll see why. Only games up are old games 2015 they had almost every ncaa tournament game on youtube, now you cant find a one. this the 1st time since 2013 where they put up more than one full game up
At this point K was 12-2 in the Elite 8. (Edit: 12-3 after the game I guess) Unreal. If only Bill Self's win% in the Elite 8 was half as good as that, his legacy would be cemented.
Unfortunately its going away. Honestly #1 mission is KEEP Self, and 0 postseason bans. They wanna take a Conf Tournament Title and a Final Four appearance away? Blah..who cares. We got plenty to lose.
By far the best game of the tournament. If Carter wasn't elbowed in the face early in the game I think the outcome would've been different. Duke was the only team that could have beaten Villanova. Shame we didn't get to see that game.
"If Carter wasn't elbowed in the face early in the game I think the outcome would've been different." haha. "Duke was the only team that could have beaten Villanova." HAHAHAHAHAHA! Spoken like a true t-shirt fan. You are , in fact a t-shirt fan, right? As in, not an alum, but own a dook t-shirt. Like all the rest of their fanbase?
Theres a reason Duke played Zone defense throughout the year. They couldn't defend man to man. The way Villanova was making 3 pointers do you really believe Duke would have beat or had a better chance of beating Villanova than Kansas? Villanova would have beat Duke worse than they did to Kansas. Only reason Michigan made Villanova make less 3's and keep it more respectable than kansas was because they scouted what Kansas did wrong and how to defend their blitz threes better. NO ONE was going to beat Villanova. They literally had multiple Stephen Curry's on their team.
Great, classic matchup between two blue bloods. Also caused the Stormy Daniels interview on 60 Minutes to be delayed, prompting some angry complaints from the non-basketball crowd.
Every b-ball coach should show this game to their players. Kansas run their zone and overload sets to perfection. Other than that, Duke could’ve won this game if they played man to man. Lost respect to Coach K when he started using more zone. Very untypical for a coach that wins championships with man to man defenses
Duke beat Virginia with that zone. Can't have any weakness playing help man. Not that many freshmen are great defensive and offensive players 5 star or not and that is what Duke lives and dies with.
Derek Mathews you serious? Kansas basically playing 4 guards and 1 big throughout the game. All their guards were shooters. If you watched Kansas game against Cuse earlier that season, Kansas destroyed their zone offense with their overload sets
Best game of tournament. Both teams played their guts out. I've been waiting for this to come up.
One of the most underrated March Madness games of all time imo, this game was so nerve-racking and intense. Both teams played so well and it was a blast
Then Carolina smashed them again
Could we get some more of these? Now would be the perfect time.
Jonathan Bunton plz that would be amazing what about the first duke unc game
We did this year with Gonzaga and Ucla

Bring the elite 8 back to Omaha. This was a great experience
Agreed. It’s a great place.

I Remembered This Game. Duke & Kansas Going at It in Omaha. Classic
Rewatching this, even though I knew it didn’t go in, I still jumped out of my seat for that Grayson shot, trying to will it in. Then i clutches my heart when that blocking call was made.
Slame333, Malik Newman contested that shot just enough to make sure he would miss.
Rewatching, I am reminded at how Puke played D with their hands. I’m also reminded how they got away with several fouls and hacks. Oh well, KU win! 😂
Refs gave this game to KU, respect to them for hitting clutch baskets, but that blocking call, I still have nightmares 😂

It’s so funny to rewatch this game now and see that Mitch Lightfoot is still at Kansas
He had a block party four years later against Providence.
I could watch Duke and KU play all day 😂. They're the best
Great post
Gary Trent Jr could have used another year or two at Duke.
Come to think of it, Duke could have used him also.
Trevon Duval as well
