Psalm chant is beyond gorgeous!!!!
Barry Rose one of the jewels of English Cathedral Choir training!
Truth!
There's an immense spiritual power to this broadcast, especially in Tranchell's Psalm 103. Rare indeed, these days. Absolutely sublime.
Tranchell's Psalm 102 is sublime.
If anyone would like to see the music, the psalms are published here (102) peter-tranchell.uk/musical-works/double-chant-for-psalm-75-in-a-major-or-d-major-and-psalm-102-in-b-flat-major and here (103) peter-tranchell.uk/musical-works/quadruple-chant-for-psalm-12-in-c-minor-atbb-or-e-minor-satb
Beautiful service and superb audio quality! The psalm settings are hypnotic.
I was 16 years old when I listened to this broadcast, crudely taping onto a cassette.
At the time I literally had no idea what I was actually listening to; no knowledge of choral music what so ever. All I knew was that The St Paul’s Service simply took my breath away and began an abiding fascination with English choral music.
After nearly forty years, I never thought I’d hear this recording again. Thank you for putting it up.
You're welcome! It's certainly a breathtaking performance. We are uploading a lot of Howells' music in the run-up to his 125th Anniversary in October 2017.
Every one of Howell's Evening Services are stupendous, but if I had to choose one, this would be it, especially sung in this place by that choir. And a big shout-out to Chris Dearnley for the immaculate organ playing.
Have I just heard the most wonderful rendition of the St. Paul's Service ever? So whole-hearted on the part of director, organist and choir...I have been enjoying the uploads on "Archives Of Sound" and I expected this to be up to Barry Rose's usual superlative standards and I certainly wasn't disappointed! As for the anthem, well, Byrd at his most vintage!
The Howells is certainly quite a sing!
And not easy I bought a copy of the score and tried the tenor part and also had a go at the 1957 Westminster service couldn't get it right the key changes are remarkable to say the least! Must have another try...
The Howells is absolutely colossal. I've not heard it better than this; stunning!!!
this is truth
Shame that Barry Rose left all beauty and subtlety at Guildford.
Not sure what 32 boys and 18 professional men should sound like, if not this.
