This is a typical head, which was painted in original by Jusepe de Ribera. He is one of my favourite painters and I did a lot of copies from him.
The painting is made in three stages. Underpainting, colour and glazing. So it took three days because I let it dry between the sessions.

This is not a painting, but an illustration of a painting. One thing we never fail to see with amateur artists is that they are so enamored of the lure of painting highlights that they just cannot wait to paint them last, so they paint them first!

I'm dreaming of painting like this but I'm just beginning. However even if you're miles and ahead of the basics that I should learn, watching still helps a lot to understand the process.
I'd have a question for you : are you always letting your layers dry or do you sometimes mix colors by applying superior levels before the downer fully dryed ?
