  • Adventurer Rebecca Grim and conservationist Leonie Mahlke paddle for four months, from Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada, to Glacier Bay, Alaska, to meet women fighting to protect the coast. They kayaked in the Inside Passage, a network of coastal waterways in the Pacific Northwest, and home to the Kwakwaka'wakw, Coast Salish, Oweekend, Heiltsuk, Tsimshian and Tlingit First Nations. Film preview! paddlingnorth.com
Though some whales unexpectedly surfaced near us during our trip, it's important that everyone is aware of regulations and guidelines to reduce risks to marine species. See www.SeeABlowGoS... for more information.

The question at the beginning of this wonderful film is, "Why do you want to paddle the inside passage?" And is answered by the conclusion, "Why isn't everyone doing this?"
For those who have not been lucky enough to experience such a trip in person this film is a good explanation of why it should be on your bucket list.

Great job on this film. I really enjoyed the perspective and filming and the story telling. Rebecca , Leonie and all those interviewed seem like great people to know. You may be familiar with my son's film story on "The Passage" too. ( Day's Edge Productions) I was triply blessed with the chance to canoe the coastline, an amazing family to share it with and a son who turned it into a memory.

I kayaked (solo) the inside passage from Seattle to Skagway twice - 10 weeks on the classic route the first trip and 14 weeks the second trip with 3 side trips up fjords to tidewater glaciers and another side trip to glacier bay before paddling into Skagway. I had exceptionally perfect weather the first time and more typical weather the second with ~ 2 weeks total either wind or rain bound. The wildlife both on land and sea is unrivaled and the primitive camping is spectacular. If you do this trip, do yourself a favor and DON'T set a particular end date because paddling in conditions beyond your abilities can be dangerous. Otherwise, enjoy!

Nice work! I paddled from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy on the outside summer before last and the west coast of Vancouver Island a few years ago and the story rings so true from what I saw. Jaw dropping beauty, but log-jammed beaches, huge amount of plastic from industry including piles of black plastic pipes of various diameters (from fish farms?), floats, nets, ropes, engine oil containers, etc. But there is also what I didn't see - large areas of rocks for sea lions and and seals to haul out...empty. I talked to an old First Nation man on the northern Vancouver Island coast, and he said that it used to be full of life. Eye candy, but impoverished when one looks enough to actually see and imagine what this must have been like and how easily we let it slip away. Wisdom comes from knowledge and we are so lacking in both.
This is out of sight and out of mind, unfortunately.

Glad you liked the video! Sounds like you had a great trip. And yes, the more awareness we can generate about conservation, the better chance of fixing some of those problems.

I watched your new video on Thanksgiving, Hank, which seems (to me) particularly appropriate. We all have much to be thankful for on this insanely gorgeous planet, a planet we seem hell-bent on despoiling. Your video captures both the beauty and hints at the ruin - and still inspires viewers such as me.
Meanwhile, you find your groove. Your life’s path has taken you to some odd corners of the planet and some careers that only lurk at the edges of your passions, interests, and talents. This new video, I believe, reveals your true destiny: filmmaker. I look forward to your new videos... and perhaps new movies as well.
Best holiday wishes to you and your family, near and far,
    David

Hi David! Thanks so much for your kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed this preview of the amazing trip these two women did. The environmental issues raised in the preview are important to them and me, and I hope that their trip helps acquaint even more people with these issues, especially with their additional film that hasn't been seen yet. As for new, upcoming films, I'd love to! We'll see what's in store for the coming year -- that can fit into a tiny budget. :)

Hi Jonathan! Haha, I wasn't sure many cared! I have about 10 more New Zealand episodes that are filmed but not yet edited (it's a lot of work), but I'm also mulling over exactly how/when to continue the series. Hearing that people are interested is motivating. Thanks so much for watching!
