OMG! Did you say you had a Ural? I had one in England back in the early 70's with a sidecar. Then the wife got pregnant! What struck me was that the owner's manual went so far as to show you how to re-wind the spark coil should it short out, in addition to other field repairs. It also had a stick shift on the left side of the transmission should the pedal linkage break? I think the bike was a knock-off of the '53 BMW? Without the side car it didn't ride too well. But I enjoyed it! Almost bought one in the States. But the Kawasaki 980 cc V-twin won out. Then the Yamaha SR-500.... Then the Suzuki VL1500W and now I've "down-sized" to 1/2 a cruiser, the Suzuki LS650 (S40) Savage. Sucks to be old. Ride Safe!
If you had to cook fresh raw ingredients from scratch(in some emergency SHTF eat what you can get situation) do you think that this style of mess kit with the shallower but wider pans would be more versatile than the traditional European/German M31 style mess kits with their narrower but deeper main pot and smaller top pot?
I guess it all depends. If you’re just trying to get nutrition and not prepare a culinary delight, it would probably actually be beneficial to boil everything and drink the broth. But yes each has its caveats. Generally mess kits were used for soldiers to use as dinnerware, holding food prepared by field kitchens. To have hundreds or thousands of soldiers to individually cook their own individual meals would’ve been a nightmare. Back in the day soups and stews were generally served in field kitchens, so that European style served that purpose well. Thanks for taking time to look and commenting

I have two Ural, a 2012 Tourist and a 2018 Gear Up. Yes, they are clones of the BMW M70, produced in Russia since 1942.
