I was just watching an episode of Barney Miller with the same premise (guy gets himself arrested because he can't adjust to life outside of prison) and it sent me looking for this. I saw this clip in this reunion special when it aired and since saw the whole thing in reruns; I ended up liking the original Newhart show even more. I always saw Bob as kind of a Jack Benny type, especially his killer deadpan.
I love that the interior decorating of their apartment would change just like in a real couples apartment. That back wall by the kitchen went from a lot of bookshelves to now just a table.
I LOVED Howard! I got to work with Bill Daily once. Really super nice guy.

Well, this is a different apartment than the one they started in. They moved up to the penthouse in (I think) the last season.
