  • Installing just MS-DOS on any computer is a fun and fairly painless experience. Now lets try the same using a copy of Apricot's own factory installation media.
    Not as easy.
The mentioned ACT/Apricot disk archive and associated disk writing tool can be found here: actapricot.org/...

I worked for apricot computer in California USA as a test technician. That must’ve been in the mid 80’s.I unpacked every computer and monitor and ran test programs on each one that was imported from the UK for at least 24 hours each. Then re-packed each one for sale here in the United States.GEM What is the GUI that was pre-installed and some were color monitors and some monochrome. Model’s were F1, Apricot portable, Apricot PC, Xi, X10 I believe.

Mm. I can fully relate to the pain of doing out-of-box testing as that's my job right now!

Nice overview of a very uncommon system. Love the mini keyboard screen. I'm still utterly shocked this arrived non-broken from the UK. Hoping you'll do more coverage on it, such as what the mini screen displays, a nice shot of the trackball, and how the GUI works in hercules mode.

My first job was a database programmer in Glasgow, Scotland. The company sold these. They were excellent.

Really good to see this. I'm struggling to discover how to write disks for the earlier ACT Apricot PC and Xi.

Was fun to watch, looking forward to seeing more of this machine and its hidden burgers.

Fascinating machine. I hadn’t seen a low level format in ages. Thanks for documenting it :)

    What a good looking machine.
It's sad that your HDD is so sensitive to heat though. My ST-225 works whatever the temp is.

Your drive is not immune to it either. It's just your platters are larger and the track density is lower, so it isn't as sensitive. Thank god thermal precompensation became standard with voice coil drives.

      @@CelGenStudios Oh, I do have a 5.25 hdd that doesn't work unless it's hot.
Just that 225s seem so reliable x3

There's also sys.com in c:\windows\utility; i wonder if that would have worked without having it on a separate floppy. I do see command.com also extracted from the installer, but not io.sys.. Hm..

This sounds like me doing weird things with quad booting a Toshiba laptop from 98.

I used these computers, they were not great, but the worst part was the MSDOS, when MSDOS 6.0 came out it's write cache usually forgot to write anything back so most of the time was spent running chkdsk and reinstalling stuff.
DRDOS was far better of course, but Bill sabotaged that. Lucky he isn't in charge of health or anything like that these days, he wrecked much of the personal computer industry.

if you are doing this more than once a year i say get a gotek drive and flash it with flashfloppy firmware. Even if not permanently installing it in a machine it helps with not having to write and swap floppies.

Wow, that phosphor is slow, I wonder why they used it

The Xen also had a matching white phosphor monitor to go with it (and I am looking for one) but I guess the green phosphor monitor was the cheaper option.
