Martin's right in a way and so is John D. Most important thing to learn in life for future jobs and employment is learning to follow instructions. But that shouldn't be taught through math class. If there's a better eay to do it that shouldn't be a problem.
Showing work on a simple math problem in 2nd grade that you could easily do in your head is laying the groundwork for more complex problems in future courses. Teach them young to show work and when they get to high school or college level math they will be accustomed to working their problems out .

Hey loved the discussion today. But JD, Jesus did follow the rules completely and perfectly. He stressed obedience to everything the Father told Him. The Bible says we show Him our love by our obedience. I was a 15 year homeschooler and now am a math and Spanish tutor and I totally agree with Martin and Si. Yes your son gets the answers right but he must learn to listen and trust and obey his teachers. You said you loved his teacher. I would highly recommend you going and having a talk with her, and share your heart but please help your little one to obey and work with the teacher. She has a reason for doing things the way she does...so that's my advice and it comes from a heart of love and experience!!!
JD , you are wrong about Jesus not following instructions. He followed his “Father’s “ instructions all the way to the cross. If he broke everyone’s rules, then he would have sinned and we know that’s not the case. The reason the teacher wants students to show their work, so some students will try to cheat & just copy down the answers. Not saying your son wants to cheat. Another reason is that if he does make a mistake and misses the problem, the teacher can point out where he went wrong and explain the correction to him.

I’m having the same problem with my geometry teacher! I’m a sophomore in highschool and am really smart and amazing at math and I always find easier ways to do my math and get the answer right every time on every paper and I’m failing cause I don’t do it exactly how my teacher shows us, but I can’t find the answer the way she shows it!
Mr. John David...I had this same issue with my son in first grade bc he didn't understand the way the teacher wanted him to do his math but could figure his own way. Her amd I had a talk about it and she explained it to make perfect sense why she needed them to do it. She said they need to learn the multiple ways to do a math problem so that when they do harder problems down the road (algebra and trig) if they master these ways now they will make it easier to process the harder problems and they aren't having to learn these ways then when everything is harder. Hopes this help your view on it. It helped me.
Unfortunately, there are many families who make it about what they can get. My & my husbands family's have done this, and we've just walked away, with hurt, but, just walk away, cuz, it ain't worth going to Hell.

Whether it’s what to do better or what not to do, it’s up to you to figure out. As frustrating as it is to be smarter than your superior, how long before Carter thinks he is smarter than JD. He still is going to have to honor and respect his dad. I have 3 boys, and we live 8 hours away from family. It sucks having to pay more to your baby sitter than what you did on your date.
There’s a reason that they want him to learn/do it a certain way. It has to do with building onto that way of doing things so that he can do higher math concepts

I absolutely love this podcast but it stresses me out how much of a know it all Martin is about parenting and tries to be wise beyond his years… it’s easy to be the perfect parent when you aren’t one 😊 I’m a foster parent and have had many kids that learn in very different ways 🤷🏼♀️ I for one always struggled with showing my work in math and also explaining to my teacher how I got to my answer
I agree. I have always been good in math. At times I couldn’t follow the instructions because I didn’t understand them. But I could come up with the correct answer by doing the problem in a way that made sense to me. Not everybody’s brain is wired exactly alike. Then the educational system goes and changes “the instructions” of what is acceptable in getting the answer. I was trying to help my son with math some years back. The way he was to get the answer was completely different from the way I was taught, making it way harder than need be. Godwin was right when he said, “My Daddy told me to work smarter not harder”. When the public educational system switched to COMMON CORE all they did was to dumb the students down even more. Just go look at where the US ranks world wide in all subjects. It’s sickening, disgusting and plain sad. I agree that Martin was way out of his league when trying to advise on this subject. I understand what he was saying about being able to follow rules and instructions. But I don’t think that applies in this situation.
In 6th grade prealgabra.. my teacher said the same thing.. no way u did the multiplication in ur head.. we argued.. then she called me to the front of the class for a math off with her ( mrs.bowen the teacher).. she thought she would embarrass me.. until a 11 yo went twice as long as her until she made me quit.. she was blowed away.. i just thought it was normal..lol..i wasnt in that class long.. i got jumped a few grades to advanced lol even tho i didnt want to.. 😂😂😂.. the funny part is she liked me after that.. so long story short.. the teacher should sit down with the student n see how they figure the problem out..
