If Marlene had asked Ellie what she wanted and Ellie said "no" to the surgery, would Marlene have gone ahead anyway? Should she go ahead even against Ellie's wishes? If so, what would be the point of asking Ellie?

@@Martyntd5 I asked myself the same question. And I think no matter what Ellie's answer was, Marlene still would've went thru with the surgery. She's was wayyy to invested in the cure by now. This surgery isn't a guarantee, But She's willing to sacrifice her, And while Ellie meant something to her, it's not even close to how Joel feels about Ellie. He wasn't about to lose another kid..

@@debhorne150 I agree. There is a reason we dont kill people for medical experiments. Even if they asked Ellie and even if they would honour her answer, they are not really giving her a choice. Even if the cure worked, manufacturing it on a large scale would be a whole new problem, and all the different "groups" of people would be fighting over control and who it gets distributed to. Maybe I'm a pessimist but I don't think a cure would fix their problems at this point.

Yes. I absolutely believe that Joel made the correct decision:
      1. Not allowing Ellie the autonomy to make the decision about her own life was a terrible choice.
      2. Brutalizing Joel to get rid of him was a big mistake - the decision for whether Ellie should undergo this procedure could have been discussed between Ellie and Joel. This would not have lessened the emotional pain, but it would have meant some closure...it would have been ethically sound.
      3. Distributing the vaccine would have been completely up to the Fireflies. They would have made it contingent on possible recipients to do or act in ways to benefit the Fireflies. Distribution would have been a nightmare.
      4. It was said they "thought" they had a cure. Considering the nearly zero resources to make this vaccine happen, all this effort to get Ellie into that operating room seems questionable.
      5. Uh...I think humanity at this point is beyond saving. If some other freak of nature happens in the future that creates more immune kids, mayyyybe things could improve slowly and progressively. As it now stands, humanity is not really deserving of a second chance when the world is nothing but pockets of survivors gleefully doing atrocious things.
I know, TLDR. Just my thinking process that tells me that JOEL WAS 100% RIGHT!
P.S. I was stunned at the familial similarities between Ashley Johnson and Bella Ramsey. Truly inspired casting, and really amazing considering who Ashley Johnson is.

Just in case anybody was wondering, the background was obviously CGI, but the Giraffe's head was real. They got the Giraffe to pop it's head up into a large blue box where Bella fed it and then green-screened it onto the background. There is a 'making of' video.

Honestly I blame Marlene’s impatience for Joel taking out the fireflies here. If she’d waited a couple more hours and let Ellie and Joel talk, as well as explain the situation to Ellie, Ellie might have talked Joel into accepting it. But she rushed it. Not getting into how foolish a decision it is to let a very inexperienced surgeon kill your only subject right away without running other tests first, the least she should have done is give them a chance to say goodbye after everything they’d been through. She asked for what happened.

    My issues:
    1) How the Fireflies went about it: They should've let Ellie decide and they should've let that decision happen in front of Joel so he'd know the truth.
    2) Marlene's argument about how Ellie will die from clickers and raiders because "the world is broken and you could've fixed it." Lady, the world has always been broken. People have always have been doing evil, the only differences now are that there's no law and order to combat this. Human nature isn't gonna change just because you find a cure for cordyceps. Also, how are you planning on distributing this cure if it even works? I didn't hear any guarantee that it would work.
    3) Joel ain't in the right either with how he handled it, but I get it.

I figured I’d cry or tear up at least once, like every other episode. But not the whole dang time 😅. I was just emotional, between their relationship, the giraffes lol, the wonder and fear of wondering if Joel was going to die, his helplessness when he learned what was happening. And then his autopilot badass mission getting her out of there. Now I do realize there’s some questioning as to whether what he did was right. But I feel they were wrong in not telling her anything. Not telling her what was going to happen to her, not giving her the respect of making her own decision. So under the immediate circumstances, I understood his reaction and I wanted him to get her out of there as well. I have a feeling this will be an issue later on. Between them, and in general overall. But she deserved to make her own choice with all the information.

Yes I do adamantly agree with Joel. Marlene just always was treating Ellie as a lab animal to be sacrificed in an experiment. It's completely against medical ethics which have been taught since WWII and the practices of the Nazis experimentation on prisoners. I was friends with a French woman whose whole family was killed by the Nazis. She had twin sisters who were "sacrificed" in his experiments.
I am appalled at the "greater good" argument going on. However Neil Druckmann has said that 100% of gamer parents asked agreed with Joel and 50% of non parents. So with no "stake in the game" people kill Ellie for a possibility of a maybe cure being developed theoretically from the Ellie "lab rat" to be sacrificed and worst of all the argument is that Joel is "selfish" for not being ready to kill her.

    • @johnjungkook2721
      @johnjungkook2721 Рік тому +3

It's honestly bizarre the amount of people who thought that "cure" would have saved the world. If it even worked in the first place.

    @TrentRidley Рік тому +5

Long comment, start reading at your own risk, haha.
I knew a few tidbits from the first game, such as Sarah's death occurring on the night of the outbreak and that the story centred around Joel guiding Ellie across country and forming a father-daughter type bond along the way, I haven't actually played the games, however, so this series has been quite the journey.
Ellie's birth scene was amazing... and tragic... and scary... and beautiful... and really interesting as the likely source of her immunity. What a devastating thing for Marlene though. They certainly were very different people, but like Joel, Marlene was someone hardened by this world. They also both made the same mistake at the end, taking the decision away from Ellie.
I love that following the flashback they then opened up with Ellie's trauma and the change in her personality, hard as it was to see. It is realistic, though, as the experiences she has had over the previous months would undoubtedly damage a person. Especially a teenager, their hormone riddled bodies and brains being generally ill equipped to deal with their emotions as it is, haha..... we've all been there.
Some of the conversations in this episode were so well crafted. The one where Joel tells Ellie they can still turn around, go live a quiet life back at Tommy's, and she responds that they have to go all the way with their mission perfectly foreshadows Joel's conflict later in the episode. He knows Ellie would probably choose to die for a shot at saving humanity, but he just can't stand to lose her.
I also loved the conversation where Joel discusses trying to kill himself. It was the most honest and vulnerable Joel has been with her throughout. I think he realised she was needing that from him, but it was also something he simply wanted to give to her to show just how much she had come to mean to him. He was expressing to her that as dark and painful as it may get at times, you will find the light and the beauty again. You will find yourself again. That of course culminated in the moment where he indicates to Ellie that it was she that had healed him from the wound that was the loss of Sarah, she who had led him back to the light, the beauty, and to himself again - such a touching moment. Seeing Joel come from being this person who was extremely closed-off and bitter for 20yrs to this moment of open vulnerability and hope was such a great representation of that healing and how far their relationship had come.
The sound design on the hospital rescue scene (where Joel rescues Ellie from the surgeon's knife) was amazing. The music was dominant, with the sounds of gunshots, spent shells pinging on the floor, and the occasional agonised scream heard underneath it. That, and the music itself, created a great deal of tension and left a sombre sense in the air. This was no moment of triumph or joy and I think we got that same sombre sense from Joel in the car afterwards. Sure he saved Ellie, but he again had to kill to do it and he also understands that he may have just resigned humanity to eventual extinction. You can see in that moment that he's hugely conflicted and he knows that he acted somewhat selfishly, but he so desperately wanted Ellie to have the chance at a full and decent life that Sarah never got. He also knows that Marlene was probably right when she said that Ellie would give her life for a cure. Afterall, that's why he lies to her, right? Because she would have chosen to sacrifice herself and would be pissed that he did what he did. Despite this, despite knowing that Ellie would probably choose the surgery, he still couldn't bring himself to let her go. Whilst we can all make the argument for why Joel should have acted for the greater good, I think we can all understand why he didn't also, so it's super hard to be highly critical of him or claim that we wouldn't do the same. I think it's this juxtaposition that makes this ending such a compelling one. Ultimately, however, as I said above this should have been Ellie's decision to make and both Joel and Marlene took it from her. They should have fully informed her and then supported/helped her in making her decision in her own time and free from pressure or coercion.
Joel and Ellie's final conversation was again brilliantly crafted. In opening up about Riley I think Ellie was essentially saying to Joel, "Hey, this is my deepest, most painful secret and I'm about to be totally honest with you about it, so I expect you to be the same when I ask you about what happened back at the hospital." She obviously has her doubts about Joel's story, but I think she so desperately wants it to be true, so desperately wants to have not been betrayed by the one person she trusts and loves in this world, that she's willing herself to accept it. Deep down, however, I think there's a part of her that knows he's lying. Please, no spoilers, but I can't help thinking that Joel's lie is going to come back to bite him in the second game/season. Through all this trauma and adversity they've slowly built a loving relationship on a foundation of openness and trust. This fact was really highlighted by the conversations they shared throughout this episode, so I suspect that trust will be broken when Ellie learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and that she still might hold the potential for a cure. Though it pains me to say, I think this will likely be a major source of conflict between the two next season.
Anyway, this first season has been great. The writing, the music, the casting, the directing, the locations, the cinematography, the acting, etc, etc, etc has all been top notch. Special mention of course for Bella and Pedro, they've carried this story brilliantly.
Thanks for your reactions, let's do it all again come season two.

Me, just like you guys, cried in that amazing opening scene. Just wow! I’ve already read somewhere on social media that is was “Ellie’s” real mom acting like her. So I figured it out it had to be Ellie. I cried when she held her in her arms . Her little feet and hands and her looking at her mom, it really got me and than we went back to Ellie and I felt so much for this strong girl. And she’s traumatized after last episode but that giraffe 🦒 made her come out of it. Joel looked so proud when he looked at her . The other thing made me cry was when he looked at her very sincerely and said “it was not time that did it” I cried again. I watched this with my two teenage sons . And they laughed at me and made fun of me😂 saying “oh! Look! They walks into the tunnel ,” looking at me and says “”and mom cry”😂 i Don’t know why this series got me this . But you know I’m myself right now going in a trauma therapy for women being sexually abused as child . I told them this week about this episode and another women sai: ”Stop! Don’t say anything more! I haven’t yet seen the finale ! Don’t spoil anything!” 😂 So I just said to our psychotherapist “I cried a lot!” And she said it’s not strange because we come in contact with this feelings now. What I love the most I think with this series Last if Us - is this very strong bound between Joel and Ellie . That’s everything. My oldest son - who himself can’t lie - thought it was terrible that Joel lied for her . But as you guys said: he would do anything for her. My son said: “but saving everyone by letting her die.” And he said: “and he killed all those people!” And he said “this was a dark heavy episode” . But I’m thinking now of what Ellie said “I’ll follow you what ever you go”… (of course I cried when she said that) she couldn’t do that if the took her brain out and she died . I think it was coward of Marlene that not telling her. It was her life they was going to end! It’s not ok doing that without asking her. It’s cruel.

He is older, going deaf from all the shooting, has the ultimate burden of having killed innocents and he tried and failed at taking himself out. That is why I want to give him a big hug. Not an equal choice. The doc asks 'do we have enough power?' Is it reasonable that this lone doc working in an under resourced hospital (not a research hospital) will make a cure 1st time out? Marlene is used to sending people to their deaths--she has been doing it for 20 years. She saw her as so disposable, she rids herself of any momento from her friend---or representing Ellie. She also represents the state which makes cold decisions as we have seen in real world experiences of citizens held hostage. Like Henry and Sam, a family will give the world to have their loved one returned to them, alive.
The next stage appears to be conflicting views of life. Joel has idealized Ellie and his relationship with her b/c he is so relieved not to have failed--along with moving forward with a new family. Ellie has never had a family or been part of a daughter-parent dynamic. Both are very traumatized. Re-integration will be difficult

I love the attachment he has made with her. Think about it. the story he tells is the truth. They stop looking, he is a raider and they were attacked. No body left to say otherwise. He left her with no guilt to go and live.

So, it took me while before I recognised Ashley here. First I just thought they casted Ellie's mother really well, but I was just slow again.. they casted Ellie to play Ellie's mother, obviously. Great performance from Ashley!

The fact that the actor for Carl Grimes has a gaming channel and plays the last of us part two is incredible if you remember the Glenn scene than you would really like to see his acting there with the introduction of Ellie to Abby

As much as I love this episode, it still felt rushed to me, i wish they did 10 episodes instead, had this episode as an explore episode when they get trapped in the tunnel/ bus when it fluds and then episode 10 be the final countdown, because the episode was way to rushed.

I'm personally not gonna watch Season 2 if they decide to do the 2nd game. But Season 1 was easily at least a 9/10, the best game to TV show adaption we've had to date.
